Returning old containers to MAC

Possibly a daft question but when you return old containers to MAC do you need to wash them first? Rinsing the old foundation bottles is ok but I have a few powder containers where the powder is stuck round the edges and I’m not sure how to clean them without making a mess.

I just took them as is and that was fine.

I've never attempted to clean and it's been fine.
