Help me build a capsule wardrobe

Trying to break bad spending habits. I have decided that 2018 is the year of the capsule wardrobe! I have a bad habit of buying any old rubbish that fits if it is in the sale and holding on far too long. Sick of feeling 'scruffy'.

I'm 28, 5'9, a size 20-22 and would describe my style as "quirky" ... I have a managerial job that requires "smart casual" dress code.

I have bought 3 dresses in the sale after Christmas so far .. All multi purpose (look nice with a blazer and pumps for work, look nice with heels for occasions) And well fitting. I also have very wide, large feet (8).

What would you say are staple must have pieces and where would you recommend buying from? I want reasonably good quality. I don't mind paying a reasonable amount as I will buy over time. Nothing over say £70? I look and look online but I just can't get a feel for anything.

I've fallen out of love with new look; haven't liked the styles or materials for a while.

Seem to really struggle to find smart pants; they either fit my waist and swamp my hips/legs or fit my legs but are tight at the waist. I have a long torso, definite mum tum and a large-ish bust.

Appreciate all recommendations and ideas!

Marking place - I’m exactly the same as you, except I’m older and shorter Blush

Not sure if this will help. but I too would describe myself as quirky. If you look in my wardrobe, it's a sea of black, grey red and (sometimes) navy. If I shop, I only buy in these colours. No funky patterns or bright colours.
If I do really like something that goes against this code, I think of at least 3 items that it will go with. (I bought light blue jeans last week.......why?? They look ok with the grey tho!)

If you pick a limited amount of colours to stick to, you can't go wrong! Everything will match then!

Also. Recommend toast, vintage fairs, sea salt (sometimes) and tk Maxx for cheap things... But that's to balance out the toast!
