Be your authentic self Flo Wink

scampiesandchips · 11/02/2018 21:33

And now MOD and FOD are at Disney World Florida. Plenty of @'s and #'s but no #ad or paid partnership disclosure.

Sigh.

Kitsharrington · 11/02/2018 21:48

The MOD that just came up in my insta was marked #ad

wisterialanes · 11/02/2018 21:49

Mod's first # is #ad.

scampiesandchips · 11/02/2018 22:12

Ah, ok. I stand corrected. I hadn't seen that.

WipsGlitter · 11/02/2018 22:14

Yup #ad. See the thing is, will them going there really make people think "yup that's the holiday for me". I think you're either a Disney person or you're not. I can see how the swipe up can be measured and generate income / proof of effectiveness but how can s general campaign like that be quantified fir ROI?

Ithasbeenalongtime · 11/02/2018 22:24

I just keep thinking of that other blogger "Last year I worked for Universal Orlando in Florida and it's been amazing for them!" Grin

GodlessDomestic1 · 11/02/2018 22:30

Interestingly FoD’s reveal post isn’t tagged #ad and @Disneyland isn’t used at all.

GodlessDomestic1 · 11/02/2018 22:31

Disney World even

wisterialanes · 11/02/2018 22:41

I'm not SM savvy or particularly invested but in terms of longevity what is the average lifespan of an influencer? I don't envy M/FOD in Disney with 2 young toddlers, was thinking it wasn't really the most stress free holiday they would be having, but then I suppose they need to take the freebies whilst they can. Even the thought of long haul with one 2 year old would put mne off!

PNGirl · 12/02/2018 07:23

I don't think anybody knows because all the ones I can think of that make their money flogging #ad stuff via Instagram are still around. A lot of the Gleam clients I used to follow on blogs and YouTube have been around for about 8-10 years but there are plenty who either moved from fashion and beauty to other topics or have since dropped off the radar.

CookingUpAStormTonight · 12/02/2018 16:32

Don't follow MOD as she is in a very different world to me. Does #ad mean that they have had their holiday paid for or does it mean that they are being paid to provide an Insta story for Disney. I promised myself to stay off Insta over the weekend as I realise now that it really just a sales site for all these influencers. I still like following my nieces on it but am trying to keep away from the saleswoman.

PavlovaPrincess · 12/02/2018 17:36

As I understood it, if they've been paid money, they have to declare it as an ad. If they've been given an item, it's up to them whether they declare it as a #gift or not. I think with some of this high value stuff, like the Disney holiday or the Renault car thing, the lines are getting blurred. FOD doesn't seem to use either hashtag (although I'm not 100% certain as I don't follow him and can't be arsed trawling through his feed to check).

I've also noticed some of the influencers use the paid promotion geotag thing which is a lot clearer and looks more professional than the tiny little #ad stuck in the middle of 50 other hashtags but I guess there's nothing that says you have to do this which is a shame.

PavlovaPrincess · 12/02/2018 17:40

I just keep thinking of that other blogger "Last year I worked for Universal Orlando in Florida and it's been amazing for them!"

This was also my first thought Grin I don't understand how the benefit of something like this would be measured on Disney's side.

HolyMountain · 12/02/2018 20:12

I haven’t noticed any #ad on the M/FoD stories or squares.

Ithasbeenalongtime · 12/02/2018 20:35

MOD's has the paid partnership tag now (was that there before?) which is pretty clear. Would be bit bizarre if FOD doesn't use it now that she has, so I'm interested to see if he does. I'm quite intrigued to see how many posts you are required to put up to get a free Disney holiday actually. DLAM has done quite a few posts of her Morocco trip, two of which are tagged with the holiday company (though unsurprisingly for her, not #ad or paid promos) and she seems to be flogging other gear while she's out there as well so she's definitely making the most of her "holiday" Grin.

RooKangaroo · 12/02/2018 20:51

Thank you, everyone, for a fantastic thread. This is very much the kind of stuff I want to read and discuss, and it's great to see how things have evolved and influencers have started to directly engage here and change their practices.

I was once taken in by The Londoner blog - though it's been a while now since I saw the light. She is simply dreadful for transparency and very much curates the image of buying everything herself and living the life off her own back.

She goes on holiday at least once a month, and it's all paid for by hotels and travel agencies. She won't mention any of this, and then will give a negative review about the hotel/room/resort, but won't give any detail.

Does anyone else follow/heard of her?

GoldInTheAirOfSummer · 12/02/2018 21:41

The Londoner is the absolute WORST for any sort of disclosure. She declares nothing and is constantly on comped trips. I don't know how she swings it because I'm pretty sure her readers are generally pretty young and wouldn't be able to afford the holidays and handbags that she is trying to sell.
Have you see the GOMI threads about her Roo - I lost hours to them once. There are a lot of people that have seen through her!

HolyMountain · 12/02/2018 21:42

I used to follow RosieLondoner but she was so completely up her own arse I stopped.

I always thought she was just waiting for a rich man to marry.

Ithasbeenalongtime · 12/02/2018 22:54

I've not come across The Londoner before, but she doesn't look like my kind of thing - it all looks really staged. I'm cringing a bit looking at her feed.

A couple of news articles drew my attention today, which I thought I would share. First was the news that hospital admissions for eating disorders has increased dramatically. The article I read made a number of hypotheses as to why this could, but mentioned the rise of social media could be partly to blame > "Experts also noted that social media could be fuelling the rise in eating disorders. “It does not help because of the ways in which it fuels low-self esteem and makes people feel bad about themselves. We all know rationally that whatever goes on social media is the shiny part of someone’s life and beneath that everyone has stuff going on ... but when we look we can easily feel inadequate and envious,” I know this is something the Honthehuns account feels quite strongly about.

The second article was around Unilever's threat to pull advertising from Google and Facebook over concerns around their business practices. "With continuing issues including fake news and transparency, coupled with advertisers questioning effectiveness, brands are being more cautious about where they place advertising. Brands around the world are beginning to scrutinise the content they are being seen against. It is a different world to the slightly haphazard spending that was going on only a year ago.”

Maybe the brands are waking up a bit? Or maybe they think Insta adverts and paid partnerships are more effective than Google banner ads etc?!

CookingUpAStormTonight · 13/02/2018 05:46

Yes, Ithasbeen, I saw both of those news stories. It is indeed a glossy, shiny world, though the Instamums I dip into are always keen to share their problems too..... most of which fall into my category of real life!
It is good to see companies like Unilever expressing concern about transparency - when transparency does become an issue, or hopefully even a selling point, it will ultimately trickle down to all areas. It is bizarre how controversial such a basic requirement is........... we are still having to ask what #ad, #gifted, etc really mean as they are so shrouded.

HolyMountain · 13/02/2018 06:26

Just seen #paidpartnershopeithvisitflorida on FoD’s picture with the girls.

boxoftoads · 13/02/2018 08:11

Yes - the thought of Disney long haul with two tiny kids is my worst nightmare. If I was covered in spew after the first leg I'd have gone home. You don't get on a flight if your kids been sick.

Also - Jo Malone, I'm still waiting on my lip balm. Has it been posted???? 😉

chloechloe · 13/02/2018 08:21

That's a strange comment toad. We'd never get to go anywhere as our eldest gets travel sick a lot and throws up all the time. Being sick doesn't mean they're necessarily ill Hmm

boxoftoads · 13/02/2018 08:57

It's not that strange. I don't think taking anyone who's been sick on a flight is ok.

Last year the lady in the row behind me on a flight (who had been ill before boarding it turned out) was sick on take off.

She covered her row and my row in sick.

4 of us had to sit during take off and for the 3 hour flight stinking. A pack of babywipes was the best we could do.

Utterly grim.
