Nail polish wrecking my nails

...or maybe it’s the remover?

My nails have always been in pretty good condition, but recently I decided to wear nail polish more often and now they’re awful - peeling and weak. I just use normal nail-varnish (not gels/acrylics etc) mostly Maybelliene, with an Opi base and top-coat (think it’s called Start & Finish). Then I use remover every 5 days or so when it’s chipped - it’s not an acetone-free one, does that make a difference?

Is this normal when doing nails more frequently?

If I wear nail polish regularly, my nails really sufferer too. I’ve just painted them today for the first time in months, I usually just use super mani by Barry M. I’ll probably paint the again next week then that will be it for ages. Any more and they get ready dry and brittle. Xmas Hmm

Same here OP. Except even with acetone free remover my nails flake 😔
Tried using just a coat of hardener and no varnish this week, they are still flaking

Yes me too. I need to have a good break from polish for about 6 weeks for them to recover from general weakness & peeling.

Timefortea99 · 17/12/2017 19:11

Yes, is has happened to me too. The only way to restore them is not to wear any and let them recover.

CountessofGrantham · 17/12/2017 19:18

Me too. Haven’t worn any for about 8 weeks now to let my nails recover but they’re still horrible. Am wearing polish for the next couple of weeks but I’ll give it a good long rest after that.

I have exactly the same problem. I can wear it for 24hrs but if i leave the polish on any longer than that, my nails will break and flake until a whole nail's length has grown out. Would love to find some polish or coating that didn't do this to my nails.

Bubblysqueak · 17/12/2017 19:24

I had this problem and so tried gel polish which completely ruined my nails.
I used burt bees cuticle repair which has really helped my nails have never been in such good condition.

It’s the acetone. Some acetone free removers will have lots of alcohol which is really drying. Best thing would be to use a decent cuticle oil daily then have a couple of naked nail days a week using CND rescue rxx or similar keratin treatment. It usually takes 6-8 weeks to see an improvement in nail condition when switching products.

Thanks everyone, glad to hear it’s not just me! Will check out the product recommendations.

It’s a shame cos I love having colourful nails but hate the aftermath Grin
