Make-up novice needs help

I've never really worn much make-up and if I do I've kept it to the bare minimum as I don't know how to apply it or what suits me.
But I'm getting older, newly single and I'd like to try especially for nights out (if I ever start dating again).
I thought I'd go to one of the bigger shops Boots/John Lewis etc and ask for help. But I don't know which brand.
Recommendations please for your favourite make-up brand that will fix my face but not be too expensive.

I would start with Bobbi Brown. They are excellent at choosing colours that suit you, and the assistants are usually helpful and not intimidating. Bobbi Brown are also good at a natural look.

If you don't have them locally, other good bets are Laura Mercier and Clinique. Or go into a Space NK - then you don't have to stick to a single brand.

Wherever you go, book a make up session in advance and go at a quiet time, not Saturday afternoon. Some brands charge for the session, but the charge is always redeemable against any products you buy.

Thanks TheXXFactor I'll try Bobbi Brown first. I was hoping to sort something tomorrow morning but it might not be the best time. Worth a look and hopefully a chat even if I can't get a session then

Went to Bobbi Brown yesterday and they were super helpful. Explained everything. Didn't try and tell me I needed lots of products. Kept it simple and easy. I bought what I needed and looking forward to a new look for me.

I would say NYX. Their products are more superior than that some of the other well know bigger brands and are so much cheaper. They’ll do your make up for you in store for free and help you pick bits out to buy too.

Cross post! Enjoy your new make up. I love getting new make up and testing it out!
