How to apply mascara so it doesn’t look like a pile o’ shit?

I’m trying hard with natural looking makeup.

I bought hypnose noir mascara on the back of good reviews since all my ancient mascaras clump.

I’m hoping for a soft natural looking result with no clumps or obvious ‘paint on the lashes’ but I can’t do it! I do the wiggle at the base then a light lift through but that leaves tiny lumps. Looking at YouTube videos they always swipe 5-6 times. I tried that and my word, my eyelashes looked enormous but also spidery, not soft.

How do you put mascara on??

I look down into a mirror when applying mascara. Try wiping the wand of any excess before applying to your lashes.

Hypnose is quite volumising and will give you the spider lashes look quite easily. As a PP poster said wiping the excess from the brush will help.

Using a lash comb or another clean mascara brush to comb through after the mascara has dried will also help to separate the lashes.

I think you need a more natural look type mascara. Benefit roller lash is very non clumpy and one swipe will give lovely definition.

You are using the wrong mascara, google natural look mascara. Lancôme always give me wonderful thick curly lashes. I.e. Not natural looking lashes!

I use Max factor clump defy (purple packaging) no clumps, curls, doesn't smudge, and lengthens. Cheap and cheerful but does the job.

Thanks all,

Is benefit roller lash expensive? I might have to throw out loads of my old cheap (freebie) mascaras and start afresh. Hypnose wasn’t cheap!

And looking down and wiping off. Will try all that!

What kind of look do you all look for with eye makeup? I’m dark eyed and dark skinned. When I first put on eyeliner and mascara it looks like I’m really heavily made up. 30mins later I can’t see it as much. Is that just perspective?

I found roller lash quite clumpy, myself. Bare Minerals Lash Domination gives me quite a natural look. I comb through my eyelashes with an eyelash comb after applying.

Isismacdonald · 13/12/2017 17:30

Benefit roller lash is amazing! One coat will give you long and defined lashes (not exactly natural - more of a 'natural but better' finish) and if you wanted to add more i still don't find it to be clumpy. It's £19 I believe but well worth it

BusterGonad · 13/12/2017 17:49

I like Roller lash but don't think it's natural.

justasecond · 13/12/2017 19:22

I second the max factor clump defy for a natural look with good lash separation. I use it for day, it stays on well and doesn't smudge. I have the hypnose too but tend to use it for eve, a bit trickier to apply though and avoid the spidery look

Mascara works slightly better/easier to apply when it's dried out a bit, so it's always a bit too liquidy when you first open it.

Wipe the wand off gently on a bit of tissue before applying.

Curl lashes beforehand, this makes a big difference.

Apply sparingly and leave to dry before applying a second coat.
