18th birthday gift

It’s my boyfriends daughters 18th a few days after Christmas. She’s a lovely young lady and we get on really well so i’d like to buy her something from me that is beautiful and stylish (in her opinion - not necessity mine!) that’s a memorable keepsake. I’m thinking a piece of jewellery but don’t really know where to look. The obvious Pandora really isn’t her style and sadly Tiffany (which would have been my choice at 18) is out of my price range. Any ideas? Budget up to £50.

Watching as I have a similar quandary about a suitable gift for a relative.

Does she wear make up? What about a personalised compact/make up bag?

stayfit · 12/12/2017 09:41

John Lewis had some silver jewellery. I can't remember the brand but for around £60 I go a nice necklace. It was good quality sterling silver. Check their website

She loves make up but I bought her a make up bag last year. Personalised compact is a good idea though. I’ll have a look.

Thanks - hadn’t looked at John Lewis... night try selfridges too. Just wondered if there was a brand that all the cool kids are wearing that I had no idea about Confused

Kate Spade does lovely bangles and earrings.

PNGirl · 12/12/2017 10:04

Maybe look at Olivia Burton? Their watches are popular.

Buy her a dress watch. Something that looks classy yet can go with casual dresses.

Something like this is what I bought

justpoppy · 12/12/2017 11:11

That’s lovely @stayfit. How long is the chain. She prefers longer pendants.

She doesn’t wear a watch unfortunately

Jewellery is such a personal taste......I got so many things for my 18th that I never wore and graciously accepted so unless you’re 100% sure don’t get it! X

Jewellery is so tricky to buy for others - particularly across generations. If anything I'd maybe go for a silver cuff or bangle. Michael Kors and Kate Spade do good ones.

justpoppy · 12/12/2017 12:30

She has some piercings in various bit of her ears so maybe I’d be better to buy her some different jewellery for those. I’d rather buy her something I know she’ll like and i’ve trawled through all the websites mentioned and can’t see anything.

Ah right - you referring to wanting to buy Tiffany made me think she was into trad stuff. My DD has lots of ear piercings too. Going for individual earrings is a much better plan.

A Radley purse? They have some nice ones in the sale

Agree jewellery is personal taste. But Micheal kors etc for the price they are not even silver right? Just stylist but not sure of quality. I like some stuff here: www.notonthehighstreet.com/gifts/shop-by-occasion/birthdays/18th-birthday-gifts

justpoppy · 12/12/2017 18:43

That’s my feeling re Michael kors too Stay. I’ve seen some lovely long chains on the Hush website but don’t really want to pay £35+ for something that’s not silver.

My daughter had an expensive set of make-up brushes from my SIL on her 18th and she was over the moon. They're still going strong and I expect will last for years - I think they were from Liz Earle but I think some MAC or Bobbi Brown brushes would probably go down well.

I took my daughter to a particular shop to choose a piece of jewelry for her 18th. We had lunch afterwards, it was a lovely day. Maybe get her to choose? Or order a few things to choose from and send the rest back.
