I know it's been done before,,, but is there any alternative to GHD in the hair straightener department?

I had my hair cut today and the nice hairdresser straightened it for me with ghds. I never knew my hair could do smooth and I really like it. But I am lazy and unskilled at hairstyling, busy in the mornings, faddish and, in short, just don't know if hair straightening is going to be something I get good at and addicted to for life or not. So I don't think I can really justify £100 on GHDs right now. Are there any alternatives that would do the job and not explode?

No, there truly isn't.

emwad · 20/04/2007 22:46

GHD's are the best thing since sliced bread. OR have curly hair x

ScummyMummy · 20/04/2007 22:46

really really not? What happens with the other brands? Do they not work?

Scummy, no-one is more lazy and unskilled at hair-styling than me - I've never mastered blow-drying my hair - but GHDS are dead easy and they do make your hair look good.

HumphreysCorner · 20/04/2007 22:47

Yep, Hairtools Straighteners are equally as good and slightly cheaper especially if you buy from one of the Ebay hair shops. HTH.

expatinscotland · 20/04/2007 22:48

I'd sell the shoes off my feet to buy GHDs.

They really are the biz.

I wrote at my side job to earn the money to buy them after trying cheaper brands and they broke or they were just shite.

MamaG · 20/04/2007 22:49

NO

you CAN justify GHDs

I've had others -almost as expensive, GHDs are SO quick and easy

Pinkchampagne · 20/04/2007 22:50

GHDs are the best by far! I have had other straighteners, and they just don't do the job properly. I have very thick hair & straightening would take forever & not give good results, but my GHDs are amazing & worth every penny!

LilyLoo · 20/04/2007 22:52

NO ! Tried loads of straightners ( cost enough to buy them ) before i paid out for them was well worth it. The only time i have been able to go to bed with wet hair and run them over in the morning , lovely straight locks next day. Well worth their money, would actually pay more

Hathor · 20/04/2007 22:53

I vote for GHDs too. The best I have used.

Pinkchampagne · 20/04/2007 22:53

May I add that when you saw me at the meet up & my hair looked pretty bad, I did not yet have my GHDs!!

ScummyMummy · 20/04/2007 22:57

hmmm. So essentially you are all saying I need GHDs? Or don't bother at all.

I really am quite cackhanded. Do you really think pretty much anyone could use them? How long would it take to transform a bedhead with wiry hair to sleek smoothie?

And they won't go the way of my iron and stay in the bottom of a cupboard for months on end after the novelty wears off?

PC! You looked absolutely stunningly beautiful at the meet up. Including your hair. Honestly.

Trust me, GHDs are idiot-proof.

I was HORRIBLE at straightening, but GHDs made it easy.

LilyLoo · 20/04/2007 22:59

Def not scummy. V easy to use they are the one thing i would take to desert island (with electric socket) will never be bored of them NEVER !

Pinkchampagne · 20/04/2007 23:00

No they won't go to the bottom of the cupboard! I have the thickest nightmare hair, and don't have the patience to spend hours on it, but my GHDs give pretty good results with minimum effort!
I would spend ages with my last ones, and end up with bushy hair at the end of it!

You are welcome to my other straighteners for free if you want them, scummy, but GHDs are the best!

LilyLoo · 20/04/2007 23:03

I found the slimmer irons better. What's your hair like ?

ScummyMummy · 20/04/2007 23:05

Aw- that's a really generous offer, pc. Thank you. I think I have ghd lust now though! If it's hard for anyone to get a smooth effect with other brands i think I'd be worse than useless. The hairdresser give me a rather pitying smile as she asked about my "styling regime" today and i explained that it wasn't really my strong point!

ScummyMummy · 20/04/2007 23:07

It's shortish but very thick, almost wirily so, and has a sort of kink to it.

Pinkchampagne · 20/04/2007 23:09

Look on ebay, they often have them slightly cheaper on there.

ScummyMummy · 20/04/2007 23:11

Thanks very much everyone. i'm off to have an online window shop.

OP posts:
LilyLoo · 20/04/2007 23:11

GHD the only way then i'm afraid.

Pinkchampagne · 20/04/2007 23:17

Good on you! I was almost ready to hand you my GHDs for having such blurred vision on the night of the meet up, but I just can't be without them now!
You can probably pick some up for under £100 if you shop around.
