I know it's been done before,,, but is there any alternative to GHD in the hair straightener department?

I had my hair cut today and the nice hairdresser straightened it for me with ghds. I never knew my hair could do smooth and I really like it. But I am lazy and unskilled at hairstyling, busy in the mornings, faddish and, in short, just don't know if hair straightening is going to be something I get good at and addicted to for life or not. So I don't think I can really justify £100 on GHDs right now. Are there any alternatives that would do the job and not explode?

Oh, I'd be scared to get a cheaper option - would hate to throw good money after bad. Are they really as good?

hoolagirl · 21/04/2007 19:51

You won't regret your purchase, GHD's really are the best thing since sliced bread!
Im on my 2nd pair now and they are the BEST money I have ever spent on myself.
Could not live without them now, after years of thick curly hair.

HumphreysCorner · 21/04/2007 19:51

As I said earlier-Hairtools are excellent. Equally as good as GHD. Totally agree with nappyaddict.

I have read this thread as I am thinking of getting some GHDs but have a couple of questions

Are they available only from hairdressers or online? I havent seen any in argos or Boots.

When I use my babaliss (sp) straightners they ends of my hair seem to flick out, will this be the case if I spend £100 on GHDs?

Are they REALLY that good?

I have used countless different hair straightners and there are none as good as GHD's.

Yes they are expensive but theres a good reason for it.

Buy them!

RubberDuck · 21/04/2007 20:10

Well I got Hair Tools FHI Hair Straighteners for Christmas on the advice of my hairdresser (she reckons they're newer, better, cheaper and outselling GHDs hands down at her supplier) and they are FAB.

Really pleased with them. They heat up to 232C, can be used wet to dry (whereas most straighteners specifically say don't use them like that) and have ceramic tourmaline plates.

sibble · 21/04/2007 20:12

am in NZ so not sur eif you an get them in the UK but my haridresser uses 'silver bullet' cheaper than GHD's but just as good IMO, she reckons better. They have both in teh salon but she uses them through choice.

Pinkchampagne · 21/04/2007 20:19

BKBK - you can get them online & even pick them up on ebay.
They are much better than the Babyliss ones. I had Babyliss straighteners & didn't find them that great. My GHDs are 100 times better, I am very very impressed with them!

bumperlicious · 21/04/2007 20:22

I got some babyliss ones on a couple of recommendations, heat up as high and as fast as GHDs. I've never used GHDs but a friend who has said the Babyliss ones were as good. This is them and when I got them in store they were half price.

ash6605 · 21/04/2007 20:36

agree with rubberduck on the FHI they are fab.my friend is a hairdresser and prefers them to ghd's so when my ghd's broke she got me the fhi's in replacement and they are just as good.my hair is VERY course and thick and i could not live without them.apparently they are made in the same factory as ghd's,so are exactly the same just with different names(don't know how true this is,my hairdresser friend told me but i can well believe it)
got mine in pink off ebay they worked out less than £50 with p&p.

ash6605 · 21/04/2007 20:39

sorry that thread didn't make sense.have said "she got me them" then "got them off ebay"!
i did get them off ebay on her advice, was what i meant!
am suffering with vertigo at the moment so a tad confused!

nappyaddict · 22/04/2007 03:11

well i have fairly thin, straightish hair anyway so would be hard to say if they are as good as ghd's personally as my hair doesn't need much straightening. 1 friend who has curly but not that thick hair has used them with brilliant results and another with thick hair but not that curly has aswell. i couldn't give you answer about how well they work if you have thick and curly hair cos no one with hair like this has tried them.

Wuxiapian · 22/04/2007 10:29

Are GHDs good for frizz, then?
My hair's thin but frizzy.

MamaG · 22/04/2007 16:46

yes Wux, they'll be good for your frizz

Tinker · 22/04/2007 18:56

Right. I'm getting a haircut next week, will seek hairdresser's advice.

bigknickersbigknockers · 25/04/2007 14:35

just thought I would renew this thread, I have just been to hairdressers and she straightend my hair with GHDs and said there was nothing on the market that would touch them (GHDs) thats her opinion anyway, she had the new ones for sale in the shop for £120 (the ones that curl as well as straighten) and she had the flat ones for £100. Still think its a lot of cash to spend but which sort should I go for if I do decide to invest in some?
Bloody hell I cant make a decision these days without asking the mumsnetters for advice

bigknickersbigknockers · 25/04/2007 18:25

bump

Gingermonkey · 25/04/2007 21:34

nothing will beat them, I promise you. You will end up spending fortunes on cheap copies and eventually cough up for the GHDs. Bite the bullet and buy them, they are totally amazing!!!!!!!!!!

bigknickersbigknockers · 27/04/2007 12:58

just been and bought some GHDs and they ARE everything you all said they would be They are fab and I only had a quick go with them as I had to go pick up DS from pre school.
Money well spent
