I know it's been done before,,, but is there any alternative to GHD in the hair straightener department?

I had my hair cut today and the nice hairdresser straightened it for me with ghds. I never knew my hair could do smooth and I really like it. But I am lazy and unskilled at hairstyling, busy in the mornings, faddish and, in short, just don't know if hair straightening is going to be something I get good at and addicted to for life or not. So I don't think I can really justify £100 on GHDs right now. Are there any alternatives that would do the job and not explode?

ScummyMummy · 21/04/2007 00:25

i had ghds but they have recently broken so i have had to resort to using dd's remington ones - shite!

definitely go for ghds or just be ugly - its up to you

Pinkchampagne · 21/04/2007 00:35

Excellent!!

nappyaddict · 21/04/2007 00:35

my sister has hair tools ones and they are really good too.

nappyaddict · 21/04/2007 00:36

oh have just read that you've bought them now. oh well.

Tinker · 21/04/2007 00:37

Oh no, why this thread now. Have been thinking baout this recently - have Babyliss ones - not really very good. But, I just can't spend that much. Can I?

StraightHairedScummyMummy · 21/04/2007 00:42

You must, tinker. Because I just did. And I'm not even officially employed till Monday so def can't justify it. You will help me get over my guilt! It's kind of your moral duty as my friend, I think.

Tinker · 21/04/2007 00:49

Stop it, stop it, stop it! I bought heated rollers recently on the strength of a mumsnet thread - my first atempt at using them was laughed at here.

StraightHairedScummyMummy · 21/04/2007 00:54

Wow- heated rollers sound very glam and advanced in style skills. I honestly was planning on staying wiry haired if people said no to all but ghds... but somehow I succumbed.

Tinker · 21/04/2007 00:56

I think they are an advanced skill, my hair went positively bouffant. Been out of the box twice . I'm going to start flogging stuff on Ebay - that can be my frivolous expenditure fund.

StraightHairedScummyMummy · 21/04/2007 01:01

That's a very good and sensible idea. Actually I am starting to feel a bit ashamed as had conversation about learning to budget properly with partner very recently...

StraightHairedScummyMummy · 21/04/2007 01:03

I can't imagine your hair bouffant! It's always looked silky when I've seen it.

Tinker · 21/04/2007 01:04

Yes, but buying them has enforced that conversation so is a Good Thing. Go forth and straighten, am envious. Must go to bed. I shall dream wistfully of very straight hair.

StraightHairedScummyMummy · 21/04/2007 01:06

Me too. Night.

Tinker · 21/04/2007 01:06

Last hairdresser blowed dried my hair by putting just-got-out-of-bed curls in it - got lots of compliment. I made a cack-handed attempt at doing it myslef at home and so thought the rollers would be the shortcut. Hmm. Must try harder.

StraightHairedScummyMummy · 21/04/2007 01:08

You should get daughter to do it for you! I have a feeling i will have to hide straighteners from boys, actually. One is complete style slave and keeps stealing my spray on hair wax stuff.

Pannacotta · 21/04/2007 09:01

Have followed this thread with interest as I have too have wiry hair which needs taming...
Have looked on lookfantaatic.com and they are doing a promo on the GHDs (£86) but they also have the new ones - New Generation GHDs, does anyone know if these are any good aand worth the extra money (they're £99)?

Gobbledigook · 21/04/2007 09:02

No, no alternative. GHDs are the only ones worth buying.

jampot · 21/04/2007 10:53

the new ones have a 2 year guarantee and switch off if they havent been used after 15 mins - very worthwhile imo

Pannacotta · 21/04/2007 11:03

oh that sounds like a great idea, esp with a toddler around as its so easy to get distracted, also 2 yr guarantee sounds good, thanks Jampot.

jampot · 21/04/2007 11:17

also you can use them all around the world as they are multi-voltage or something.

see here

nappyaddict · 21/04/2007 13:59

i had 2 pairs of ghds. one blew up, the others seemed to not straighten my hair so well. my hairdresser said it was common for ghd's to "lose power." she recommended these instead. they work just as well as my ghd's ever did even on my friends naturally curly hair.
