In light of the "soap vs shower gel" revelation... solid shampoo!

Am I the only one who has recently discovered solid bars of shampoo?

For the first time in my life people have asked me what shampoo I use as it smells so good and looks so clean and shiny. My hair feels soft and lustrous and I am over the moon with it. No more plastic bottles so it’s an environmental win as well.

I’m using one of the round shampoo bars from Lush that has its own special tin to keep it in. OK, it meant braving The Lush Smell to go in the shop the first time, but I've ordered online since then Grin

The Lush bars are lovely, but I’m open to other suggestions. Anyone found any other good solid shampoo?

Really great thread OP. You’ve shared wisdom with many of us who were in the dark till now. Thank you!

Ooo I am loving the henna blocks from lush since my head got irritated with hair dye.
Will try the shampoo Grin

weekfour · 11/12/2017 22:56

You guys cost me money!

Belfastbird · 12/12/2017 07:53

Ooh which ones are you using for curly hair - my daughter has crazy curls which I have no idea how to control!

NewtsSuitcase · 12/12/2017 07:56

And toothpaste powder

greenhairybottle · 12/12/2017 08:16

Belfastbird I use this one on curly hair - it made my hair curlier and less frizzy. Soaps that didn't work were the more astringent tea tree soaps. Look for Glycerine or super fatted soaps.

nannybeach · 12/12/2017 09:26

Thanks NewtsSuitcase, will have a look, silly question do you guys also have the old fashioned soap dishes to store them in/on?

nannybeach · 12/12/2017 09:30

I must admit I dont go in the Lush stores, I love the smell, but over the years have become allergic/sensitive to so much, even specialist eczema products, I shower with good old fashioned water.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 12/12/2017 09:32

I use honey I washed my hair from lush which is lovely. I also have solid American Cream conditioner that they did as an exclusive that's really good. I wouldn't recommend the other solid conditioners u less you have short hair. Just too much of a faff trying to get a "lather" with their regular line solid conditoners.

To the person upthread who asked about lush solid shower gels, they lather in a completely different way to soap. They truly act like a regular shower gel but solid. Very nice.

HenBarrow · 12/12/2017 09:36

This is all new to me, but I saw the soap thread and am a convert now - so much better than shower gel! This is probably a silly question but are the solid shampoos ok for kids? I'm thinking about stinging eyes, sensitive/eczema skin...

TheHoundsofLove · 12/12/2017 10:03

I absolutely love the Seanik shampoo bar from Lush - it actually seems to clean my hair and scalp in a way that no other shampoo does! My 7 year old son has used it for years without problem - he has a tendency to get a really dry scalp, which totally goes away when he uses the shampoo bar. I've used it since he was a toddler and there has never been a problem with it stinging his eyes.
I've never thought of using soap instead of shower gel, but I'm off to find that thread now as I'm interested in any ways to use less plastic.

ellequick · 12/12/2017 10:06

Could someone point me in the direction of the soap vs shower gel revelation thread please? In case I need to add something else to my list along with Lush shampoo bars.

Ohms11 · 12/12/2017 10:17

I absolurely love the Godiva shampoo bar from lush... Jasmine scented and conditioning. I also use the"honey i washed my hair" bar sometimes. I find they are great for my hair and dont affect the colour too badly. And the scents make me happy.

Hulder · 12/12/2017 10:24

Have seen them but like others was put off by the quantity of SLS - apparently it's higher in the solid bars than the liquid shampoo.

Lush's article says it's just to make it solid and it doesn't affect you as much in the solid bars but I'm highly sceptical given a) I have curly hair that's transformed by going SLS-free and most importantly b) I have ezcema and control it completely (no emollient/steroid needed at all) by avoiding SLS in all skincare.

Lush is a store I really want to like but the migraine/asthma-inducing smell of the shop + SLS in its products stops me from taking the plunge.

Nyx1 · 12/12/2017 10:43

not sure what I think of the Funky Soap shampoo and conditioner

i found the shampoo hard to rinse out and the conditioner just felt odd.
it will all get used but maybe not by me, lol.

people using Lush (which we'd do via mail order) can you recommend a shampoo and conditioner that doesn't have a really penetrating smell? We all have easygoing hair with no particular needs. I don't mind SLS at all. Interestingly this Funky Soap is marked SLS free which might account for why I felt like I couldn't rinse it out? It did foam, but ...hard to explain, felt like it left a coating on the hair.

TheHoundsofLove · 12/12/2017 11:08

Nyx1 The Seanik shampoo bar doesn't have a strong smell - it just smells quite 'clean'. I did try one (can't remember what it was called) that was so strong, you could smell it from outside the bathroom! But Seanik is honestly very gentle.

Nyx1 · 12/12/2017 15:06

Hounds, thanks.

I might wait and see if there's a new year or sale or any offer codes etc.

I also think we might use the Funky Soap shampoo as shower gel. Or do I ask for a refund. I suppose I ought to try it again but it really did feel hard to wash out.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 12/12/2017 15:10

I might wait and see if there's a new year or sale or any offer codes etc.

If that's referring to lush then I'm afraid you're out of luck. They have 1 sale a year and that's exclusively Christmas items as a rule and they never do offers or discount codes.

Nyx1 · 12/12/2017 15:16

ah thanks Frikadela.

I think Lush is a big risk on account of the smell so I will start looking for shampoo bars with SLS!

Try the 'honey I washed the kids' lush shampoo bar - it's fab.
Lathers really well and washes out great and leaves hair in good condition. Nice simple honey smell that is not too strong.*

rizlett · 12/12/2017 16:29

I'm sure there are people who will remember these...

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Magnetic-Soap-Holder-Adhesion-Wall-Soap-Dish-Sink-Bathroom-Kitchen-Silver-FO/162478154640?hash=item25d473e390:g:V3wAAOSwqu9VMI27

I use them to stop my shampoo bar & soap getting gunky - I also use beer bottle tops in place of the magnet provided.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 12/12/2017 23:34

Washed my hair with normal soap today thanks to this thread and it looks good - better than yesterday when I used my usual shampoo! That might just be luck though as my hair is rarely nice twice in a row. It doesn't feel dry, anyway, I used my usual conditioner.

Ollivander84 · 13/12/2017 06:07

Hulder- I've gone completely shampoo free Grin which has not only made my curls better but got rid of my flaky scalp
One thing I can recommend because I adore it is moogoo conditioner. Wasn't keen on the shampoo (when I used shampoo) but the conditioner is fantastic
