In light of the "soap vs shower gel" revelation... solid shampoo!

Am I the only one who has recently discovered solid bars of shampoo?

For the first time in my life people have asked me what shampoo I use as it smells so good and looks so clean and shiny. My hair feels soft and lustrous and I am over the moon with it. No more plastic bottles so it’s an environmental win as well.

I’m using one of the round shampoo bars from Lush that has its own special tin to keep it in. OK, it meant braving The Lush Smell to go in the shop the first time, but I've ordered online since then Grin

The Lush bars are lovely, but I’m open to other suggestions. Anyone found any other good solid shampoo?

I'd never heard of solid shampoo and conditioner but love the idea of it. I have long very thick hair and go through bottles of conditioner.

I'm really put off Lush by their liberal us of SLS. Good to see their article defending it was blasted by comments underneath! Amazon has Funky Soap ones which looks great and SLS and paragon free, so will give one of those a go.

RustyBear · 11/12/2017 17:09

I love Lush solid shampoo, though I wish they’d bring the Karma one back to the stores, it’s only available online and the delivery charge is more than half the price of a bar.

It does last ages, though (unless you leave it in the shower while someone else is showering, when it dissolves pretty quickly Sad )

I've just ordered some solid shampoo and conditioner from etsy. My thick, curly hair is really dry and nasty at the moment, and I think it might be due to over washing (I'm having a lot of baths to help with a bad back, and it seems wasteful to have a bath without washing your hair!)

The ingredients look lovely, SLS free and full of coconut oil and shay butter... fingers crossed it helps!

AnneLovesGilbert · 11/12/2017 17:16

Ooh, hadn't thought of etsy, good idea. Which seller was it from if you don't mind saying?

DancingHouse · 11/12/2017 17:23

Has anyone found solid shampoos in anywhere else other than Lush?

ToftheB · 11/12/2017 17:35

@AnneLovesGilbert and @DancingHouse I've ordered from FunkySoapLondon www.etsy.com/shop/FunkySoapLondon?ref=l2-shopheader-name

I can't vouch for them yet as I've not got them - but the reviews look good. I'll come back and update once I've had a try.

I love my solid shampoo. I have the yellow one from Lush. I dont need conditioner afterwards.

I rub it on my hands, then lather my hair. Then use the lather/bubbles from my hair to wash with as a soap, using my hands. Then rinse hair/body under shower.

Runningoutofusernames · 11/12/2017 17:47

Like pp said - be careful with coloured hair, my lush shampoo turned my fancy highlights to a block of yellowy platinum within about 4 weeks!

Justabadwife · 11/12/2017 17:57

I've just ordered some Jasmin scented shampoo from a seller on eBay. It was only £3 so if I like it its great, if I dont then its not a huge loss.
Until 10 mins ago i didn't know this stuff existed 😂😂

Nyx1 · 11/12/2017 18:08

ooh jasmine scented! Something else I noticed when looking at bar soap, conditioner, shampoo was much nicer scents and prices look okay if things last just as long or longer. As I say, I don't know how long this stuff will last but I will keep you posted.

AnneLovesGilbert · 11/12/2017 18:15

Thanks @ToftheB that's the same seller I found on amazon! Be interested to see how you find it.

Littlelondoner · 11/12/2017 18:16

I love these if i fly handluggage only saves on the liquids. Although I do find they make my hair greasier quicker and unsure how or why.

greenhairybottle · 11/12/2017 18:53

I use glycerine soap from Waitrose on my hair. You don't need a special soap for your hair you just need to find a soap that suits your hair. Look at the ingredients and choose something you think will help.

BarrowInFurnessBusDepot · 11/12/2017 18:57

This is what I buy

It’s lasting quite a few weeks. It smells lovely and hasn’t caused any irritation or drying or anything.

greenhairybottle · 11/12/2017 19:17

Barrow that looks like a lovely bar of soap - the superfatting they mention will improve the condition of your hair if it's dry frizzy etc. Someone with greasy hair might need a slightly different formula but even so the soap wouldn't go to waste as it can just be used on the body. My approach is to find a soap that works for your hair and then just use it as an all over soap...no need to have a separate soap for hair and body. By the way for all the no-poo followers, soap has made my hair less frizzy than all the expensive products I have ever tried. The soap I mentioned from Waitrose costs around £1.

allegretto · 11/12/2017 21:26

Actually I have gone one step further and just started using soap on my hair! Started by accident as I left my shampoo on the other side of the bathroom and couldn't be bothered to get out of the shower to get it and found it worked quite well.

Bratsandtwats · 11/12/2017 21:31

Just spent £30 on the Lush website buying solid shampoo and other bits thanks to this thread.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 11/12/2017 21:33

Can someone tell me about the soap not shower gel thing? I have never used shower gel but DH loves it

bluebump · 11/12/2017 21:38

I buy my solid shampoos from Amphora Aromatics, I say shampoos I've only got one and its lasted for ages so I've not needed to buy another yet.

Mistoffelees · 11/12/2017 21:39

Nyx I've done a bit of searching today and lots of reviews say various lush ones strip colour and I can't find one that is specifically for coloured hair on their UK site

couldnteatawholeone · 11/12/2017 21:40

I thought it was just me that used their shampoos! I converted my OH too (he woudl only use herbal essences and other brands in times gone past but have converted him now). I currently am on Jason and the Argon Oil. I find that the soaps and shampoos smell strongly to begin with but then they ease off a bit. I bought some cheap plastic soap dishes from superdrug - the round solid shampoo bars fit nicely into them.
I have quite thin fine hair and loved the moteblanco, jason and argon oil, honey i washed the kids and (in bottles/jars) happy hippy (or something like that) and jersey bounce (i think - made with eggs and salt - amazing for my scalp and occasional deep clense).
I have yet to try the ones that look like soap- on my xmas list.

nannybeach · 11/12/2017 21:41

when I was a kid in the 50s, shampoo was shaped like a waterlilly, made of stuff like greasproof paper, impregnated with the shampoo, you wet you hair then rubbed it with the lilly thing, worked a treat so I had to laugh, toothpast was either power, or a solid block, will that be making a comeback I wonder!!

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 11/12/2017 21:44

I have not tried them, but I shall do now, thanks to your recommendation.

I’ve been trying to reduce plastic waste.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/12/2017 21:44

Thank you for this - I didn't know you could get solid shampoo.

Madonnasmum · 11/12/2017 21:47

This is so weird. I just came onto S&B to ask about the lush solids as I've just bought one tonight and wasn't sure. It's a seaweed one so apparently good for greasy roots. Am trying it tomorrow am and will report back.
