Rab style jacket

My mum has asked me to find a coat for myself for Christmas. I really like the style of these Rab jackets, and could do with a sporty style one to chuck on while out and about with my baby. Pockets, moveability etc. Preferably some degree of waterproof and certainly reasonably warm. I have a fat arse (hence needing to be active with the pram!) so ideally would be hip length.

I'm not interested in a named brand and don't really want to go above around £70 but could go to £100 if it was really suitable.

Anyone any ideas of where i could look?

Uniqlo and M&S do this style cheaply. The whole point of this jacket though is its technical details; proper outdoor brand ones from Rab/North Face/Patagonia will be designed to be super warm yet lightweight. You might get the look from the high st but not necessariily the functionality.

Oh and any padded down filled jacket won’t be waterproof or even water resistant. You’re supposed to wear a waterproof shell over the top in wet weather.

Thanks, yes i was afraid of that. I tried a Biba one on yesterday in HofF and it did feel as though i'd get soaked in the least bit of rain. I was hoping Sports Direct or somewhere might do an ok version but a lot of their coats have furry hoods which i'm not really wanting.

I have a uniqlo one. It's so warm but I wear a berghaus shell over when it raina

Actually have a look on Mountain Warehouse. I’ve not heard of the brand but there are quite a few at various price points, on sale. They would at least have more technical properties than one from a fashion name.

Have a look at Lands End also. They have some great jackets and always have some sort of discount on them.

Rudgie47 · 09/12/2017 15:38

I've got 2 the Rab one and a Snugpak one and TBH I think synthetic ones are more servicable as they will cope better in the rain. Also the down ones can go bald in the baffles and need a restuff.
If it was me I'd get a syntheic from Go Outdoors www.gooutdoors.co.uk/freedom-trail-womens-essential-baffled-jacket-p385495.

TK Maxx always seem to have loads of this style.

TattiePants · 09/12/2017 20:32

DH has a Rab jacket but also a very similar one from Decathlon that he thinks is almost as good. Pretty sure it was only £30ish.

jelliedeel · 09/12/2017 20:48

I've got a Decathlon one too. It was £30. Really quite warm and good value.....not waterproof though. How about one from Next, there's a proper hip length padded one that is warm for about £50 and seems showerproof.

Toddlerteaplease · 09/12/2017 20:50

I got a RAb jacket on eBay. Practically brand new.really warm but not at all waterproof. But I love it.

sheepysheep · 09/12/2017 20:54

I don’t know where you live but there is a Rab outlet shop in Derbyshire (I think it’s near a place called alfreton and is about 5 mins off the M1). It is more industrial unit than shop. It’s only open on a Wednesday for a few hours in the afternoon / early evening. I don’t live near there but was travelling up the M1 a few weeks ago so called in - I bought a Rab jacket which looks just like the one you pictured for £80. It’s fab :-) Super warm but really thin so it doesn’t make you look like a Michelin man!

PollyPerky · 09/12/2017 21:10

Uniqlo
Decathlon

I have 2 Uniqlo full length down coats (but they do jackets.)

Having said that I have a Rab and love it. You really do get what you pay for. It's light, warm, slightly stylish :) and it will last forever. I'd save up and get something really good if this is something you will wear for years to come.

WeeM · 09/12/2017 22:39

I was looking at the Rab one too but decided it’s just too much money. The decathlon one at £40 is down filled, folds up small and is really nice and fitted on.

welshweasel · 09/12/2017 22:43

I have a rab one and also a dare2b one, which was a third of the price and just as warm to be honest. They’ve got a sale on at the moment so worth a look.
