Trousers with an actually high rise

None of the trousers I own fit me well. Except possibly for one pair of Rag and Bone jeans with a 10 inch rise, but they are stonewashed and so can hardly wear them to work. Am due back after Christmas after two maternity leaves in quick succession and feel shabby and horrible.

My problem is that I am tall (5’9’’) with a very long rise. Most high street shops make trousers that are just too short (eg Uniqlo, Jigsaw). But the trousers that seem OK in terms of length (I don’t actually have very long legs, just a bit longer than average — eg Zara is fine) don’t come up high enough, even if I buy a high-waisted style. Which means that I constantly have a pallid chilly unattractive muffin top. Also I have to buy in a size too big, because they are not hitting at my natural waist, so the thighs are always baggy.

I have fairly wide hips in comparison to my waist but in dresses and skirts am usually fine in a size 10.

Does anyone have any ideas? Tried a pair of longer length high-waisted trousers on at J. Crew which were a good fit, but expensive (£120) and slightly shiny polyester / viscose.

I would actually fit on the trousers and buy. So if I were you, I'd arrange a day for shopping and get the one that fits my size and my pocket. Wink

Have tried on too many pairs to count! Am guessing there must be some brands that cater for the long-bottomed lady, but have yet to find them... suggestions gratefully received...

Have you tried next extra long, or m&s long? I find they work quite well but aren't particularly inspiring. I'm also loving some of the wide leg trousers on reiss' website but not sure on the fit and they're £££.

NC4now · 08/12/2017 17:59

I bought some black work trousers from The Collection in Debenhams last month. They sit on my actual waist and are quite flattering.

NC4now · 08/12/2017 17:59

Are trousers a must? I wear skirts and dresses for work more.

ZaraW · 08/12/2017 18:09

I'm long waited and Boden Richmond's work well on me.

passtheharibo · 08/12/2017 18:15

If it's in your budget have a look at Winser London. I bought a pair of their navy wide legs and they actually come to my waist. I'm an inch shorter than you with my height mostly in my torso and they're slightly too long for me but perfect in all other respects.

hopsalong · 08/12/2017 21:53

Thanks NC4now and passtheharibo. I hadn’t heard of Winser but the website looks promising. And I never seem to look in the clothes at Debenhams but I have one near me. I do wear dresses and skirts too, but I like trousers and they’re definitely more practical on some client sites. Am happy to spend £100 or more for a good fit.

M&S and Next trousers don’t work... I’m not a leggy tall person and the long don’t seem to be adjusted in the rise, just the legs...

I can't offer much help but I have the same problem OP (though a little shorter than you at 5'8"). In a smaller size the waistband is too low/tight, digs into hips, in the next size up if the waistband fits there is a big saggy flap at the crotch. And tall trousers tend to just be very very long (like you my legs are normal, not supermodel length). Do you also find swimming costumes a bit short (neckline too low and/or bum riding up)?

I'd LOVE to find a trouser that fits in the waist/rise and also made of some lovely fabric. Sadly tall clothes seem to be made from especially rubbishy synthetics.

Possibly not very helpful but I find that trousers I buy in the US tend to fit better (Target trousers are my favourite). I wonder about Dutch websites as the Dutch are tall too.

hopsalong · 09/12/2017 08:03

Yes! Exactly on swimming costumes. I do much better with a bikini, but that isn’t ideal when grimly doing lengths in the local pool with goggles on. I have one costume that fits in length — but only after I ‘stretched’ it by wearing it throughout pregnancy, and the chest area looks awful. Also have problems with tops but that’s more easily solved by just buying styles that are meant to be long and having them be less so.

H&M aren’t bad, I find. You make a good point about Dutch websites. Off to Google...

I am long bottomed too and Next Work wear doesn't creep down my strangely proportioned ample haunches. I 5,7 and wear long and I think there's at least 2 linger lengths after that .

Topshop mensy” trousers are a really high waist

Tiddlywinks63 · 09/12/2017 08:17

Have you tried Long Tall Sally? They tailor for taller ladies.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 09/12/2017 09:32

Lands end do extra long swimsuits. May be worth looking at their trousers too.

hopsalong · 09/12/2017 11:19

Thank you all, good suggestions to try! I had a pair of Next long maternity trousers that were actually pretty good. I work in a fairly dressy / formal environment and would also be keen for some higher end / designer suggestions if anyone has them. I nearly bought a splendid pair of black wool Isabel Marant trousers a few years ago but decided they were too expensive — now regretting that...

Aargh, I am wracking my brain for the store recommended here that sells tall wool trousers. I thought it was Winser but apparently not. Similar profile (naice workwear) but I can't think of the name.

I love BAM tops. Long and good for bum-cover over leggings but also good for warmth and midriff cover under dressier tops. I have a bunch of the long-sleeved tops and ruched vests: bambooclothing.co.uk/shop/womens-bamboo-sunrise-vest-white/ (Some of their tops are odd-looking but the plain ones are very useful.)

I recently tried a pair of Esprit high-waisted coated jeans which fit really well (don't know why I can only find them on the German site): www.espritshop.ch/coated-ankle-jeans-mit-stretch-107CC1B038_515 The 32" leg was bizarrely short but they offer it in a 34". No help for work though I'm afraid.

Found these but not sure if I'm on the UK or US site: www.jcrew.com/uk/p/womens_special_sizes/tall/pants/tall-campbell-trouser-in-super-120s-wool/E0496

Sorry I can’t post links right now, try googling collectif naomi and collectif rebel kate for jeans that are actually high rise

Cakescakescakes · 10/12/2017 23:46

Not work wear but Top Shop Joni jeans have a proper high rise. I’m large of hip and small of waist too and they come up really high without gaping at the back.
