Thanks bo I'm pretty straight up and down. I'll check out the uniqlo ones.

botemp · 04/12/2017 16:58

You can probably also look at Weekday if you're straight up and down.

ProperLavs · 04/12/2017 17:18

bo sorry I am hogging things this evening- can we talk Hermes scarves . What do you think of them? Are they 'worth' it?

AuldAlliance · 04/12/2017 19:35

If you're talking about Hermès scarves, bo, I'd be interested to know whether you've any ideas where to sell one on, brand new. It's a Zénobie scarf from 2015, never worn.
I've looked at videdressing and vestiairecollective, and am not sure if one is better than the other...

botemp · 04/12/2017 20:00

Depends on how you define worth. Hermes scarves fall into that same category as the Birkin, the Hermes belt, Louis Vuitton logo bags, the known Chanel bags, Gucci loafers, Louboutins, etc. Yes, they all reached their reputation by being the standout item among the rest but in that they lose, for me, their value and desirability as they become the known piece that then predominantly gets bought to signify the wealth of the owner in its relative ubiquity, as they usually have an identifying detail, rather than being a celebration of craft and quality in its highest form.

That part of luxury where it acts as a status symbol just doesn't appeal to me in the least, but that's different for everyone. Yes, they are some of the nicest made silk scarves around but in my lifestyle, I don't see any place for one nor in the future, they're not my style and would instantly frumpify me. It's just one of those things, I think it's always best to see what's available at your price point and what appeals to you most, if that happens to be a Hermes I see no reason to suddenly not buy it but I wouldn't buy one purely on the basis that it's a Hermes scarf with the associations, good or bad, that come with that.

I've sold through Vestiaire AuldA, it's quite easy and quick once it's sold but it can be very slow selling, you really need to price it right. The commission is hefty so it really depends on how much you want for it. Though I'm sure you've got quite the ready audience for it on here if you post a pic. The Purseforum has a special thread area dedicated to Hermes scarves they may have more suggestion where to sell it, you may have more options if you still have the receipt.

bo love those mohair jumpers, fluffy but fitted.

DAY 5 - DAY 5 - DAY 5 - DAY 5

Plus, plus, plus

Tip out that jewelry collection and just keep on stacking. A minor bit of curation is necessary, it's not so much about matching but looking for similar shapes, finishes. If it suits your colouring don't be afraid to mix metals, the very ordinary with the very intricate and so forth. Mix with an outfit that has either very tough materials like thick leather or raw denim or a very soft sweater.

I'm up and opening the advent calendar... I definitely stack stuff along my wrist. I just have to be careful not to wear stuff that's too fine, as it gets lost on me (not petite enough, so the proportions are wrong). I'm going to rummage around my jewellery box for any bits I haven't worn for a while Smile. Love these little tips that just change up what I already have, thanks bo.

ProperLavs · 05/12/2017 06:43

thanks bo for the thoughts on the Hermes and the advent calendar!
I thought they were frumpy but told myself I was clearly devoid of good taste and class. That might well be true!

Yesterday evening I went out to meet friends. I was wearing some red lipstick and a bit of eye make up and my new hat. The rest of the clothes were a slouchy top and jeans.
The first thing one friend said to me was "oh, you're looking very french". I was well chuffed, but tried not to show it

quirkychick · 05/12/2017 06:49

Well done, Proper you sound like the perfect blend of dressed up, dressed down insouciance. What is this new hat?

Methenyouplus4 · 05/12/2017 07:33

Morning! So much to digest Bo. I love the flares, I am thinking a light pair for sumber with flats and a darker winter for with heels.

I have found some for reasobaby priced on Yoox but am I right that it's £9 delivery? And I can't find anything in returns?

ProperLavs · 05/12/2017 07:48

quirky it's this one

Methenyouplus4 · 05/12/2017 07:49

Wow-just saw all the other comments. Love the layering tip. I have one necklace and my wedding/engagement rings that stay on and usually add something etc depending on outfit. I rarely stack so might be an idea to play with.

That said, I really dislike those rings that don't sit at the base of your finger. For some reason, I just can't get away with the look of them, they seem a bit 'try too hard'. I have no idea why. They fall in the same realm as toe rings or those ear cuffs that have dangling chains off them. Just too much.

Methenyouplus4 · 05/12/2017 07:50

Proper- I think that would look really lovely with the look you described. I have a felt type hat I mean to wear more but need to get over the feeling of being on fancy dress!

boldlygoingsomewhere · 05/12/2017 08:29

Love the hat, Proper.

I'm not a huge fan of skinnies either and find a flare much more flattering for me. They are so hard to wear in damp, drizzly weather though.

Auldspinster · 05/12/2017 08:34

I've got short stumpy fingers so stacking rings don't work for me.

I'm wearing a black v neck midi dress with slightly puffed short sleeves, black opaques and black granny boots. Not very french i'd guess but smart and flattering which ticks some boxes for work.

botemp · 05/12/2017 09:07

Methen, I'm not sure on the exact number but Yoox always offer free delivery pretty much all the time or sometimes it's an offer with PayPal paying the delivery charges. Most I've ever paid was when the delivery was half price. It usually indicates it's free or reduced shipping on a banner on top or it's a code via email. Returns and exchanges are free, it's with UPS which used to be a bit of a hassle for me but these days they have UPS access points, I have two around the corner so drop off and pick ups are easier but in the past you had to call UPS and they'd come collect it which was a bit more hassle but I don't know what the situation is like in the UK. It takes between 4&5 days to get here though things seem to be delayed due to December madness and if you return it takes a similar amount of time to get back and then about a week to get refunded so something to bear in mind.

They currently seem to be doing advent offers on their App only at the moment, yesterday (ends in about half an hour) it was 20% off jewelry by complete coincidence.

Proper, I think that's one of the main issues I have with those items, they become the easiest way to buy into something to be something that you're perhaps not (or want to be). They tell me absolutely nothing about personal style, just about someone's wallet or what they like you think about their wallet. I personally don't find clothes as a medium for that interesting.

Quirky, I got into layering because I didn't want my GM and mother's jewelry just gathering dust but a lot of it was not the best for me proportionally. Think very chunky big stones 70s stuff for example but if I mix it with very fine thin bands on other fingers it balances it all out. You need a good play at first but I now have a few 'outfits' so to speak. Like Methen I don't like any that don't sit on the base of your finger, it's really uncomfortable. In 2018 I do want to spend a bit more on my own jewelry as it's mostly cheapies from COS and Weekday and the finishings are wearing. I've already earmarked some lovely things on TicTail.

quirkychick · 05/12/2017 09:51

Proper gorgeous hat.

Auldspinster I'm better with a statement ring than stacking rings. I mostly wear one, chunky silver ring with a kind of "folded" (not a technical term) organic pattern. If I go out then I might add a cocktail ring. Happy to stack bracelets and cuffs, though.

bo I agree it's a good way to play with proportions. Today I have a medium silver cuff, leather wrap bracelet and a very fine friendship style one on,

Going for the arty style today with my purple/aubergine velvet coat, oversized scarf and knitted beret.

zippyswife · 05/12/2017 10:58

J’adore this thread. bo you just keep giving- I love all the tips.

There’s no point in me attempting to contribute! But I love lurking. Thank you!!!

squix · 05/12/2017 11:38

J'adore aussi! Can I sneak in a quick shoe question - brogues - where to purchase so they don't look like school shoes?

TossDaily · 05/12/2017 12:00

Today I'm mixing up a leather wrap bracelet with some fine silver stretchy ones, and wearing the new Chanel lipstick, which feels gorgeous on and is a really good blue-toned red.

botemp · 05/12/2017 12:25

squix, I suppose it helps, the French call them Derby's or Derbies rather than brogues and generally wear them in S/S/A less so in winter.

Full disclosure I don't own any and never have as they're pure torture devices on my feet and thankfully the'yre not my thing stylistically.

So the granddaddy of them all in France are from Robert Clergerie (pic 1). They're up there in price over 400 euros usually and I don't really think they're all that nice but you could check Yoox and theOutnet for discounted versions. I would say the French versions are a bit more feminine, slimmer and a slightly pointed toe.

A good alternative are Bobbies which sounds so lovely in a French accent (pic 2), which are around 150euros, but if you shop for S/S now their online outlet are half price.

Eleven Paris (pic 3) used to sell a bastardised version with a thin rubber sole and summer fabrics that made them sort of half 'baskets' (trainers to you and me) but I can't really seem to find them on their website currently. Maybe they only do them in S/S or have stopped producing shoes.

Loving the advent Bo, Flowers

Proper, I am the opposite of you- at 5'4 I have short legs and a very long gap between ribs and hips- but sadly not much waist. Finding a sleb body match is a fab idea, I will have to buy the mags with the pap shots though!

Wore red lippy last night with black roll neck and silver necklaces, but with a v unfrench tartan mini below!

botemp · 05/12/2017 12:41

Nah Google image search is your friend here. If you have or have tried on designer denim you basically google the style names and sure enough up they come. Once you've seen a few recurring characters you sort of know they're a good double. I don't know how trustworthy those sites are that document celeb body measurements (I suppose for models they'd be a bit more easily available) but it did confirm that RHW and I are pretty close if you disregard the whole length difference. The bikini pap shots are merely there to confirm suspicions rather than the starting point.
