Foundation, primer recommendations please.

Could anyone recommend a good foundation, powder, primer? Might be asking a lot here. I have no idea what I am suppose to do with a primer? Anytime I have tried a powder it has made me look cakey and extra wrinkley. I feel my skin looks a bit shiny without a powder, though still don't use powder and just go about looking oily.

I had been using boots no 7 foundation for past few years. I have now finished it and on a night out next Saturday so desperate to get a new super duper foundation. I am old. Late 40's. Quite dry skin so I need to put tons of moisturiser on under my foundation to get the foundation on.

Maybe I should you tube how to apply foundation, primer etc?

I have dry skin, I moisturise and leave for 5 mins, then I use a light weight BB cream as my primer then a full coverage foundation over the top.

You should just use a light dusting of powder to set so that you don't get the cakey look

Would anyone recommend Estea Lauder double wear?

I think I have seen it recommended on here before. I have tried to search for recommendations but all the thread coming up are from 2011 with outdated recommendations. Thanks.

It is very thick and full coverage but it does have a habit of going a bit cakey if you have dry skin, I believe that they do a light version.

I find some foundations with spf in help keep your skin looking dewy and not dried out

I like Chanel Aqua Vitalumiere.(think that is the correct spelling I don't really use a primer, but watching for recommendation. Also have skin that tends to be dry

I am 49 with dry-ish skin but still get breakouts (hormones).

I do most of my moisturising at night - hyalauronic after the shower, then glycolic when I get into bed, then serum after I put my book down and an oil if I feel like it (glycolic every other day). I have other things I use but that's the most common/usual set.

Morning I use a bit of hyalauronic after my shower followed by a light moisturiser, then I dry my hair, then I put my sunblock on, then a CC cream, cream blush and a very light powder brushed over the top just to remove shine.

The sunblock works as a primer - usually Biore Watery Essence but currently La Roche Possay as I'm trying to use it up and central heating dries my skin so I can cope better with the slightly more oily texture at the moment.

CC cream is No 17, cheap and cheerful and is the best one I've found, and I have tried quite a few. Any blemishes I generally just use a bit more CC cream, dabbed on instead of smoothed over as I do with the general coverage.

Are you sure you need foundation? I think make up can make you look older, especially as you are actually that bit older!

I did use a primer from Bourgoise for a while and really liked it. It does seem to help your make up go on smoothly but then, so does having smooth well-moisturised skin in the first place! (and be careful if it has silicone and other products do too, then you will get a clash and rolling).

Avoid a heavy coverage foundation as I find the older you are the more it emphasises small lines.. I use Mac studio fix which gives a good coverage without being too heavy. I use porefessional from benefit before but I have a number 7 primer that I use for nights out which keeps my make up in really well.. agree B.B. creams are great but do most of your heavy moisturising at night like pp said

Thanks everyone. I hadn't realised that as you get older you are probably best not using a moisturiser. Though I can see that it shows the lines up on my face more.

I also have acne scars and really black head, horrible skin so am a bit afraid of going on a night out without make up.

Glycolic will help with the black heads, use a glycolic peel which is just a gel you put on at bedtime, Superdrug do a cheap one. Or a glycolic toner, M&S sell the brand I use though I can't think what is called.

The Ordinary also do good stuff and one of them helps with discolouration so will help fade acne scars.

If you can deal with those you will be more confident and not feel the need to wear so much make up :)

I had the same problem, and now just use tinted moisturiser. I don't know whether that will give you the coverage you want though?

@OutToGetYou Which ordinary one helps with discolouration? I've had a look at the range but really can't decide which one to buy!

I’ve just recommended it on another thread but YSL All Hours is a beautiful foundation which is very flattering in slightly older skin. It has good coverage but is so lightweight you can’t feel it on your skin and a lovely natural matter yet luminous finish. Not flat or cakey at all but not dewy greasy either. It’s really nice.

Also I noticed a big improvement in my skin when I started using the Nip and Fab dragons blood pads every night. They have salicylic acid to clear pores and minimise break outs but are also very hydrating as full of hyaluronic acid too. I found the nip and fab glycolic pads left my face shiny and sticky and much prefer these ones.

I’m also using the Ordinary niacinamide and
Vit c for pigmentation but too early to tell if any good results.

It says: uneven tone, fine lines, textural irregularities.

Oh, yes, I have the niacinamide too.

I adore Lancome Teint Miracle for my oily but dehydrated skin

A friend who is a well known beauty journalist did my wedding makeup and used this on me, it is spectacular. Just enough coverage but not heavy at all

I went to a dermatologist recently for acne treatment and she recommended this foundation too (which I was already using) so that's two professionals who really rate it

I like a silicone-y primer so I actually really like Too Faced Primed and Poreless, but you may not like the feel of it

I like the Laura Mercier loose powder for setting my make up. Just a tiny dusting over my T zone. Or as a high street option good old Rimmel stay matte. The key is to use a fluffy or fan brush and a very light hand.

tricky go to Debenhams and get samples from a couple of counters. If you are pale then be aware that lots of counter staff will lean towards giving you a shade to ‘warm you up’. I get this all the time even though I know that I am generally the palest shade in any range. You want to match the colour to the colour of the skin on your neck. This ensures no ‘lines’. You can then use blush, bronzer, highlighter etc as you wish to add colour or definition to your face.

(The max factor creme blush powder pots are the absolute best and a lovely long wearing smooth finish - very flattering).
