I have long curly hair.
Banana clip when I was a teenager always looked lovely. I’d definitely wear one again.

Whizziwig · 01/12/2017 01:07

I wear one sometimes. I have fine hair and it looks thin and rubbish tied up with just a hair bobble. I also have some of these

I used to like a nice barrette for pony tails in the 80s and 90s. Hope they come back into fashion.

Doobigetta · 01/12/2017 07:14

They aren't as good as stretchy coils, because you can't lean your head back against anything, which I find annoying.

WomblingThree · 01/12/2017 08:24

Oh god I loved banana clips. I so wish they would come back. It still seems that no one wants to commit to what we actually should be using (apart from a pencil?!) to put our hair up. I can’t believe that invisibobbles are considered more stylish than a claw clip!

YouWereRight · 01/12/2017 16:02

I tend to plait my hair in 2 bunches, and then pin the plaits up with hair grips. Easy, quick, and I can lean my head back against things.

CatherineMaitland · 01/12/2017 16:04

So I should be putting my hair up with a pencil to be stylish?

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 01/12/2017 18:40

No pencils. Just use a hair elastic like a normal human Grin

dudsville · 01/12/2017 18:54

I did not know these were called hair claws. I opened the thread thinking someone had hairy hands and were being unkind to themselves...

I didn't know of the existence of these until moving to London in 98. They are extremely helpful and I use them all the time for a quick way to get my hair out of the way. I am not a fashion icon. I don't know for certain but these last two points may be related.

dudsville · 01/12/2017 18:55

Will there be a M pencil do you think?

Shambolical1 · 01/12/2017 20:30

Claws, barrettes, banana clips, ponytailers, bun holders, hairsticks... just use what works.

I find anything that involves too much faffing about at the back of my head is a definite no-go as it never works like it does in the videos.

Hair claws are very dated. Hair elastics are not

neveradullmoment99 · 01/12/2017 20:42

I wear a hair claw. Didnt realise it was a fashion faux pas! I dont care. It does the job.

Bluntness100 · 01/12/2017 20:47

I use a hair claw for the shower if I’m not washing my hair. I tend to plait my hair from thr base of my neck down if I want it out the way and I have to go out. I tend not to wear it up other than the shower.

My daughter loves a bun though when being lazy and and she does the pony tail, twist it round, pin it under thing,

RockinRobinTweets · 01/12/2017 20:47

Is an elastic a bobble? Is this like different words for a bread roll?

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 01/12/2017 20:56

It's only a bobble when it has beads or something 'bauble-ey' on it.

Or it is in our house.

eg: Where are my Santa bobbles?

Just plain coloured ones are elastics.

picklemepopcorn · 01/12/2017 21:00

I think the style is about more than the gadget.

I start out like the pencil bun video, but then use a hair claw to clamp the twist just above the base. The rest of my curly hair sits on top of the claw above the smooth twist. It looks good, takes seconds, and works best with a claw.

I do also do a French pleat with a pencil when I can't find a claw. Must practise the bun in the video instead...

mumonashoestring · 01/12/2017 21:00

I wear one pretty much every day. Mind you, I don't give a crap whether anyone else thinks it's stylish Grin Mostly because my hair's very fine, looks scraggly quite quickly if in a ponytail and escapes from other clips too easily. I love African Butterfly clips as well.
