Help. Need a posh frock.

I am over 60 and size 16.
I used to be 12 to 14 but am on long term medication that has caused rapid weight gain.
My body shape has changed from a basic pear shape to pear shape with a tummy due to long term prednisilone. It is very, very hard to lose weight on these meds so I just have to live with it and try to limit the damage.
I am 5 ft 6in.
I need an evening dress for a big event where there will be loads of photos.
I have really lost my way because of the weight gain so would really appreciate some help.
TIA.

Have you got a Cos near you? They have some amazing dresses, look much more expensive than they are, and cut really cleverly with beautiful fabrics. Don’t be put off by the website!

Or look at Vivienne Westwood (and Anglomania), try eBay and the Outnet for bargains.

Ooh look at this one! https://www.theoutnet.com/en-gb/shop/product/knee-lengthcod4772211933208746.html#dept=INTLLVivienneWestwooddAnglomania_DESIGNERS

Do you have a specific budget?

smellybeanpole · 21/11/2017 12:27

Not sure on your style or budget. But I’ve put some from John Lewis and Coast. Stepped hemline is good for covering the mid rif area.

My tummy would not fit into the dress above! That Coast dress requires a defined waistline! I don't have one either!

So: My fall back is always wider cut trousers such as velvet and a sparkly looser top. So much easier to wear and totally acceptable unless you are going to White Tie, which I guess this isn't. Fantastic jewellery helps. Earrings keep the focus on your face rather than your tummy!

Some options might be, Jigsaw, Pure Collection, Toast, Boden, Hobbs all of which could be matched to sparkly/evening tops. Satin works well too. The above brands are available at John Lewis and they will have loads of options that would suit. Have a lovely time!

I have to go to a very posh wedding evening reception, then a very posh event with press photographers.
WAY out of my comfort zone.
I much prefer my comfy old clothes.
I wont be able to hide in the background unfortunately.

So you need something with a medium/high waistline and a full skirt to hide the extra bits. Some sleeves wouldn't go amiss either.

endofthelinefinally · 21/11/2017 17:11

Yes to sleeves. Bare arms definitely a no.

Oh no, sorry! It’s a green VW Anglomania, but sleeveless so probably not a goer anyway. But a beautiful colour, and great shape.

carrie74 · 21/11/2017 17:40

This one is lovely:

(If link doesn’t work it’s Mikael Aghal burgundy dress).

AnaWinter · 21/11/2017 17:43

What is your budget? You could book a personal shopper in any of the department stores from House of Fraser to Harvey Nichols.

Alwaysinmyheart · 21/11/2017 17:49

What colours are you looking for OP?

endofthelinefinally · 21/11/2017 18:14

I think I have a solution. My cousin is going to help me get a dress made.
So excited!
Looking at shoes and bags now.
I am so grateful for everyone's advice though.
I was pretty anxious this morning but now looking forward to the events.
I have had such a horrible time over the last year. Now I have something to look forward to.
