Lipgloss - am I doing it wrong?

I really like the idea of lipgloss but I can never seem to get it right and would love some tips or stories about how you use it?

I'm mid 40s and have naturally pale lips- if I'm not wearing lipstick people do tend to ask me if I'm unwell (when I was in VI Form it was my 'trick' to skive off general studies classes).

I usually wear lipstick every day in brightish colours as I've never found a nude that suits me either. Matte lipsticks and paints give me cats bum mouth so I try to avoid.

The idea of swiping over a lipgloss appeals as they look less 'done' and more casual but they seem to last five minutes or my hair gets stuck in them or they feel gloopy.

Is there a brand I should be hunting down that is more longer lasting, has a definite colour (without looking like jam) and will give me the casual, glossy, effortless look or am I asking for the moon on a stick?

Are you me OP

What about a tinted lip balm - they stop you looking like a corpse but are less sticky than a lip gloss?

TheFifthKey · 19/11/2017 10:59

I like this www.revlon.co.uk/products/lips/lip-color/ultra-hd-matte-lipcolor#309978161189||0 - Revlon Uktra HD Matte Lipcolour - it goes on like a gloss but has quite an intense coverage, and although it says matte, the creamy formulation means it sits nicely on lips with more of a lipgloss texture if that makes sense. Easy to apply.

I like some of the Bobbi Brown ones - but I would recommend trying in store as colour palette online not so accurate. I don't like all of them but do a few certain colours.

eloise Alas not, but relieved to hear I'm not alone!

thefifthkey i like the look of that- does it stay on well? I've found matte things seem to disappear giving me a weird thick lip outline but I will I have a test in Superdrug tomorrow.

BeaLola thanks, I'm about three hours from the nearest Bobbi Brown counter but will explore next time I'm in a city (it will make a change from charging towards Mac and Urban Decay!)

Maybelline have coloured lipbalms that give a decent amount of colour if you apply two layers (they're in a stick like Nivea).

Juicy Tubes are the best lipglosses I've used but I know some people don't like the shiny look.

Models Own FuschiaFull Lip balm is lovely.
I use an old Touché Eclat brush and paint it on. I prefer that to using a measly lip brush. 😀

Such is the nature of lipgloss.

Lipgloss was all the rage when I was at university. Lipstick was what your mum would wear. It is gloopy and your hair sticks in it.

Not a lipgloss but Clinique Chubby sticks are quite glossy and more sheer than a lipstick. Not at all sticky either.

Haffiana · 26/11/2017 21:53

I find lipgloss a complete waste of time as I eat it off within a minute or two. If I don't eat it off it vanishes all by itself - yes probably in my hair, come to think of it.

My nearest equivalent is Mac See Sheer, which is a very sheer lipstick and fairly glossy. It is sheer enough that I can put it on without a mirror and it will still look perfect. It just completely brightens up my face, perfect for all occasions where lipstick is a bit overkill.

RubbishMantra · 26/11/2017 22:04

Agree with Queen, Chubby Sticks are brilliant. Boots No 7 do a similar one, in matt or shiny. As actual lipglosses go, I find Christian Dior Addict slightly less gloopy. Your hair still sticks to them though, or your cat walks past, carefully swishing their tail on your freshly glossed lips, ensuring a smattering of cat hair. My cats have a great knack for that.

Bourjois Colour Boost lip crayons are like Clinique Chubby sticks but much balmier and more moisturising. I like ‘Proudly Naked’ for everyday. They’re not particularly long lasting but very easy to swipe and go. Normally in the morning I apply Posie Tint by Benefit which is a natural rosy pink lip stain which gives very long lasting hint of colour and then swipe my Bourjois stick over the top during the day. I’m very pale too.
