Cyst removal?

Have any of you lot had a sebaceous cyst removed? I've got one on my forehead that's been getting me down, I've got a sodding lump right on my forehead :(

The GP is too scared to lynch it - he's suggested a plastic surgeon but hasn't given me any names. If you've had it done, can you recommend anyone in the SE? Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire area?

I had one on my back done but not in the UK so can't recommend. The doctor said it was the largest one she'd ever seen.

Tbh it was barely lanced and started filling up again. Had it done again and the same thing happened. It only improved when it got infected (nothing to do with the treatment, possibly I was messing about with it and awakened the beast Blush ) and - sorry - it burst and must have sort of scarred helpfully inside as it never came back.

It was a good job too as I was getting married and I was afraid the blimmin thing would be visible like a second head through my dress.

When you speak with a doctor ask what if any scarring there may be. There is no mark from the incision but the loss of volume is visible, there is a dent in my back.

Good luck with it, I hope it goes and never comes back.

I had one in a gland in a very intimate place- luckily no one could see it I guess! Nhs did it, no problem. They gave me a general anaesthetic for it.

I had one on my hairline behind my ear. I had it completely removed at my GP surgery under local anaesthetic, as they have a minor surgeries clinic once a week. Can you ask a different GP, or ask them if there is another local practice who might help? It sounds a bit off that they won't do it, nor refer you to someone who can. Fingers crossed for you!

Yeah, my GP definitely won't do it - and he's the only one at my clinic that does minor surgery. TBH after his reaction, I don't want his shaky hands near my face!
I'm just really struggling to find out who can actually do this. I went to a skin clinic that does minor skin lesions, but they couldn't do it.

It's on my skull :( There will be a small scar, but it's visible because it's like a pea on top of the bone.

Googling private hospitals but having no point of reference for whether they are any good or if it's possible is hard (and expensive... consultations alone are £150... without knowing if they can even do it!).

I had one just in front of my ear, got it removed by a plastic surgeon and there isn't even a scar. GP wouldn't do it as it was technically on my face (well, at the edge of my face). Again not in UK so can't recommend, the GP referred me.

I have a huuuuuge one on top of my head which I keep meaning to get something done about as it's an annoying bump, but it's not actually visible under my hair.

Don't understand what the issue is - it is the scarring they are nervous of? I know someone that had one removed from their forehead just at local hospital day clinic, and though there was a small scar it was a lot better than the lump.

I had one removed from my scalp - the GP just referred to the day clinic as well. I said to the GP that it was bothering me as it hurt when I was brushing my hair and that it was tender which was true.

I had to sit in a dentist chair thing and they did it v quickly with local anaesthetic. Had a few stitches and it healed quickly. Can't really see a scar but then it's a bit hidden by hair.

I've had one removed from my forehead. I used a plastic surgeon in central London. I'm pleased with the result so happy to pass on details if you PM me (provided I can find them!).

i had one on my face removed years ago, it was done on the NHS but by a private plastic surgeon in Bristol, i'll see if I've still got his details when i get home. It was near my eye so i think the Dr didn't want to risk my beautiful fizzog

greentuftyflowers the lump is on my forehead - the GP didn't know enough about the facial nerves and didn't want to (potentially) paralyze one side of my face. Looking at charts it's unlikely it's right on top of the main nerve, but who knows, I'm not a doctor.

@GreenTuftyFlowers did they have to shave your hair to remove it? I’ve got a really annoying one at the front of my hair, near my parting, and would love to get rid of it, but thought I’d be left with a bald patch and subsequent regrowth.

princessbear - yes they did but it was a small enough area that I could do a combover! And thinking about it they removed most of the stretched skin that was over the bump anyway, so the final scar area wasn't really very big or bald at all.

I have wondered about the facial nerves thing - yes I guess they'd have to be careful about that.

Lancing and draining won't work as a permanent solution. A cyst needs to have the actual "sac" surrounding it removed otherwise it will refill. For the same reason "liposuction" isn't recommended for lipomas - you need to have the bag it grows in removed by minor surgery if you want it gone for good.

PinkTiger ok, 'lanced' was not the correct word. It was removed twice (with incision etc) by a dermatologist. Sometimes they recur, it isn't uncommon and I was warned about it.

I've had a tricky lump removed very minimally by David Ross privately in central London. He's a fantastic plastics surgeon who has a NHS practice doing reconstruction at St Thomas's. His private practice is in Queen Anne Street W1.

I can second David Ross on Harley St. I had the exact same thing as you - cyst in middle of forehead. He removed it in about 10 mins. I have a teeny tiny scar. Not visible to anyone. It cost about £500 but so glad I had it done.

I've had one in my scalp for many years and it drives me insane! It feels like I've got insects crawling there and is so itchy
Because I've been itching it and trying to burst it for years I now have a lot of hair missing round it and it's humiliating.
It makes me so miserable and conscientious.
My doctor refuses to let me have it removed and says the NHS will no longer fund it.
She says I'll have to pay to go private!
I can't afford the £250 fee and more!
How comes I've paid my taxes all my life and never begged and lied to the NHS for a go on job or any other unnecessary cosmetic surgery yet the one time I do need the tiniest of procedures to relieve my sanity I'm refused???
I'm terrified of being out and strangers pointing my bald patch Out!
It's totally overtook my daily life.
I've also been refused surgery for my split stomach muscles too as my pinicle they say doesn't hang low enough?
Wow how low does it have to be?
My 4th son us 20 now and apparently if I'd asked several years ago I'd have had it corrected no problems in the NHS.
If any of you can advise me in any way on how I can get rid of this so called Pilar cysts I'd greatly appreciate it.
