Knock 'em dead going out top needed - help!

In a few weeks I'm meeting a group of DP's 'couply friends' (who he used to socialise with with his ex-partner) for pre-Christmas drinks in a wine bar. A couple of them have been less than supportive of his relationship with me, continuing to suggest he should try again with her etc etc despite him telling them it was over and he was with me now.

I'm usually a confident person but I'm a bit intimidated tbh. I'm 10 years older than his ex and older than most of the group (as is he).

I want to feel like I've 'nailed it' in terms of my outfit. I'm 5'9" and a size 8. I'm thinking coated leggings, which I have in burgundy or navy, and a 'nice' top.

I'm winter colouring and burgundy, silver grey, charcoal, pine green are my best colours though black is a possibility. I'd prefer long sleeves.

I'm aiming for effortlessly cool, sophisticated and fashionable.

Oh and definitely no cold shoulders or slashed sleeves - they don't suit me - and no high necks as they draw attention to my neck's crepey tendencies!

I've found this green top from Warehouse which I thought might be a possibility.

Any ideas MN fashionistas?

I love the burgundy silk top in Massimo Dutti’s evening wear collection. Most of their stuff is effortlessly cool and chic.

That Warehouse top is gorgeous!

PenelopePoppy · 07/11/2017 22:54

Off to check out Massimo Dutti Bubbles

Thanks expat - I'll probably order it to try.

I love that warehouse top. I have to have it!

Mulberrysilk · 07/11/2017 23:10

The green top is lovely but I think it would be nicer with black legs than burgundy or navy.

NotJustThreeSmallWords · 07/11/2017 23:31

Coast rather than Warehouse or is the link wrong?
Anyway, I think it's gorgeous.
Not sure whether it will go with burgundy or navy though?
This would look gorgeous with burgundy leggings. I'm tempted to get it myself to wear with jeans Grin

Yes, it was Coast rather than Warehouse (there was another one I was looking at from Warehouse). I was thinking navy with the green top. I have black ones too but thought black was maybe a bit of a cliche and too 'try hard', you know trying to be young and sexy. Also not keen on black and a colour in combination (blame Trinny & Susannah for that!).

I'm not usually one for lace and ruffles but that Coast top is rather lovely (and would show off my figure more - is that shallow??? Grin).

Ooooh found this one too NotJust, same style different fabric. I hadn't looked on the Coast website itself.

I would've said 'no frills, no lace, no flowers' in my spec but shows how wrong you can be!

My only worry is whether they'll be long enough in the body and arms.

Yeah I don't think the green top could be described as knock em dead.

I do like the Emily top from Coast, and with black skinnies and heels that would be very gorgeous, especially if you are tall and thin.

Good luck, Im sure you will look hot (and remember at the end of the day not to give an actual f**k what they think anyway!)

stoplickingthetelly · 10/11/2017 10:50

The green top is nice, but you're lovely and slim so think you could definitely wear something more fitted. I know you said long sleeves but how about something like this www.oasis-stores.com/gb/clothing/tops/deco-sequin-tee/064199.html?dwvar_064199_color=00&position=62&cgid=tops#page=6&start=62&categoryID=tops
Actually Oasis has quite a few nice tops in.

myusernamewastaken · 10/11/2017 15:39

Im not a huge fan of the green top either but that might be because i prefer fitted tops rather than floaty.

Nettletheelf · 10/11/2017 15:43

I saw the Oasis top live yesterday. Don’t buy it. It reminded me of stuff that Diamanté Lil (bar owner in Bergerac) used to wear.

Are your upper arms OK? If so, go sleeveless.

Wilburissomepig · 10/11/2017 16:34

I ordered the green Coast top and it came today. I absolutely LOVE it. Fits beautifully and looks great with black cigarette pants, gold pendant and gold sandals. It's not a 'set the world on fire' top but it's gorgeous and understated. Thanks for the link OP!

Deathraystare · 10/11/2017 17:56

I love the colour of the green blouse BUT personally it is not in my size and too high in the neck for me (I know you don't care it is just me sounding off!). Every time I see something in dark green it is too high in the neck or not my size!
