Best curl tamer for a teen?

I need something for DS thick, wavy, wild hair. I'm not kidding when I say that you can't see his scalp unless you really dig around!

Are there any oils or creams he can use?

Argan oil is great, just get him to scrunch a little bit (be careful to only use a tiny amount) into his hair after the shower and leave to air dry. Gives a lovely shine and also stops frizz.
