Talk to me about wearing bold lipstick in the daytime.

I often wear bright or bolder lipstick for a rare night out, but never in the daytime. I struggle with nudes; they make me look like the undead so tend to wear a pinky nude during the day. I love my bolder lipsticks, but for some reason feel really self conscious wearing them in the daytime and feel like everyone is looking at me. They're probably not and it's just in my imagination. I would love to wear them more because I'm getting bored of the nudes. Would love to hear from all of you rocking the bold lip during the daytime. Do you feel self conscious at all?

Colours done is marmite on MN but it's the best money my dh ever spent! I could't see what suits me myself, had colours & style done at house of colour & worked out even why a bag I loved just didn't work with my style & shape.

I often advise to go with neutral make up to Mac & try a blue red & an orange red, e.g. Ruby woo & lady danger-try them them go out into daylight & take a photo of yourself then back in & try the other. You should see then from the pics what is a better fit without dithering in the mirror for ages like Id do!

This is a very timely post for me too. I've always worn pinky/beige nudes and for the last few years I have worn Chanel 'Boy' every day. But now I'm mid 40s I definitely need something more vivid to brighten up my face.

A lot of my favourite 40- something Instagrammers are sporting MAC Ruby Woo or Lady Danger, so might give them a whirl. But not sure whether I need a blue red, or orange red? Ash blonde with grey/green eyes, not pale but with quite a pink toned complexion.

Love how everyone is getting into bold lipstick. theothergirl I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will be along soon to advise you on which lip colour to go for.

I'm rather sceptical of the whole getting your colours done thing but I'm naturally good with colours and belong to a very small percentage of the population who see more colours than most and see multiple undertones, etc. very easily so I get that I speak from an unfair advantage. I also feel there's more to makeup and clothing than just colour. Texture, finish, material, etc. all have an impact too but I think if you're in a position where you struggle those colouring courses can be helpful.

The easiest way for me to see if something will suit on a counter is to wind up the bullet fully and just hold it horizontally over the lips. It's always more saturated and intense on the bullet so that will give a pretty clear read whether the colour suits you or not. Over the last few years, I've also noticed that it's a lot harder to go wrong as the colours are really being developed to suit as many as possible. TF Wild Ginger as mentioned above suits loads of people despite being an orange toned red. Lipstick Queen Medieval is another red that suits just about everyone, it's more of a semi-sheer formula but can be built up quite intensely.

Even if you mess up and find yourself with a dud not all is lost. Layering lipsticks easy enough to do, you can always correct one that's a bit that's off with another or go all Marilyn Monroe and use several different shades to contour the lips with different shades of red.

buckeejit · 17/10/2017 19:23

Botemp-that's really useful advice about winding up the bullet, will have to try that. Still think you need to check colours in daylight-I've been wowed in shop lighting by lipstick & foundation & bought then then seen myself more orange than I'd like outside!

I agree about more than colours being important in clothes-that's why I found doing the style element v useful too-as well as obvious things like big boobs shouldn't wear polo necks it takes into account your personality& asks a lot of questions to find your style type-includes cut & fabric etc. Not everyone's cup of tea but I previously tended to buy things that I would have loved to wear but never would suit me so they just sat in the wardrobe! Another bonus is everything in my Wardrobe goes together so never have to match stuff. I'm not on commission or anything but have found the process great for me!

botemp · 17/10/2017 19:39

Yes it is useful, forgot to add it's also a good way to see a lipstick formula isn't too soft. I can't remember which one it is specifically from Mac but a certain range of theirs breaks off the bullet really easily and when you wind it up you see it doesn't stay straight and often catches on the side when winding down again.

stoplickingthetelly · 17/10/2017 21:32

squashit just been researching about soft summers and I think this probably fits me better than anything else (although my natural hair colour does have a coppery tone in it). Thanks very much for pointing me in the right direction.
botemp great tip about winding up the whole bullet.

Actually having looked a bit closer I think I might be a soft summer deep. Gosh it's all quite confusing.

@TheOtherGirl- you need Ruby Woo. It's a blue-toned red that suits cool complexions. It's also very matte, which makes it more wearable than the usual glossy tomatoey reds.

Trills · 18/10/2017 07:56

Ruby Woo is sometimes listed as a magical red that suits everyone

WomblingThree · 18/10/2017 08:38

@botemp is seeing colours differently or more intensely a “thing”? I’ve had some of the worst (and most ridiculously pointless) arguments with my DH over colours. I get frustrated beyond belief when he can’t see a colour the way I see it. Blush.

BlackSwan · 18/10/2017 08:57

My next door neighbour is a lady I assume to be in her 80's. She dresses nicely and wears red lipstick and looks great. If you're wearing bold lipstick, don't smear it on. Use liner. And don't go makeup free + bold lipstick (I have someone else in mind...who thinks they can carry off bold lipstick with facial hair and no other makeup, it's tragic).

botemp · 18/10/2017 08:57

Well then there's definitely the possibility one of you is a tetrachromat, most likely DH as it's even more uncommon in women. I only discovered it as for a project we were having continual arguments back and forth with a paint manufacturer for a project that required custom work, in the end I had to go visit their R&D lab and I outperformed their in house experts and their very expensive IT setup. They offered me a job on the spot but literally watching paint dry for a living didn't sound all that appealing...

It's a bit strange to describe to others but some colours sort of come across as more than one colour. Grey especially, I can perceive it as one colour but at the same time I can see all the colours it's made up of.

Someone else on MN (whose DH is a a Tetra) told me there's a University somewhere in the UK doing a lot of research into it and desperately seek volunteers as it's so rare. Can't remember which one though, I'm not in the UK but worth looking into if it sounds familiar. I'll see if I can find it again as the website had a lot of interesting information on it.

WomblingThree · 18/10/2017 14:00

That sounds interesting. I once did one of those tests where you had to put about 100 different shades in order and I got them all right. DH can’t see shades at all and everything is red or green or blue, whereas I can see (like you say) loads of colours within a colour. The paint job sounds like heaven!

botemp · 18/10/2017 20:18

It's Newcastle University, more info here: research.ncl.ac.uk/tetrachromacy/

TheInimitableMrsFanshawe · 18/10/2017 20:28

Reckon Lip butters are great for stronger colours without the same level of commitment. I wear Candy Apple which is a slightly orange toned bright red. Can be worn from very sheer to full on pillarbox depending on application.

TheInimitableMrsFanshawe · 18/10/2017 20:28

Bloody autocorrect. Reckon, obviously.
