Talk to me about wearing bold lipstick in the daytime.

I often wear bright or bolder lipstick for a rare night out, but never in the daytime. I struggle with nudes; they make me look like the undead so tend to wear a pinky nude during the day. I love my bolder lipsticks, but for some reason feel really self conscious wearing them in the daytime and feel like everyone is looking at me. They're probably not and it's just in my imagination. I would love to wear them more because I'm getting bored of the nudes. Would love to hear from all of you rocking the bold lip during the daytime. Do you feel self conscious at all?

I am 51 with olive skin and grey hair. Red lipstick was always my thing in my youth, but when my black hair went grey I felt a but like the books colour swamped me.
I started applying it from my finger, not from the stick, and sort of pressing/ rolling it into my lips. It gives s less defined outline, but with all the colour, and it really works to brighten my face, without taking over.

UkuleleRose · 16/10/2017 03:15

I absolutely LOVE bold red lipstick - never go without it! A few hints:

  1. Make sure to match the undertone of your lipstick to the undertone of your blush. (Cool/blue undertone or warm/orange undertone)
Otherwise your cheeks and lips will clash.
  1. When wearing color, discreetly wipe your lips on your napkin before eating, or you run the risk of have nude lips with bright, bold lipstick around the edges. NOT a good look, believe me!
  1. Nothing's as aging as thin lips in bright lipstick. If you have thinner lips, outline slightly over the edge of your natural line. Slightly!
  1. Throw your shoulders back, hold your head high, and when a random jerkoffasshole comes up to you on the street and says, "I hate your lipstick," respond thusly: "Thank you!" Then beam and swing on down the road.

Right now I have 47 different shades and am in mad lust with American Beauty by Besame. However, I'm looking for a lovely peachy-pink (frost is okay) suitable for a pale blonde with blue undertones, if anyone has a recommendation.

UkuleleRose · 16/10/2017 03:18

Hope those hints didn't sound snotty. Trust me when I say they were all hard-learned. Bleargh!

Auldspinster · 16/10/2017 06:39

Pink in the afternoon by Revlon might fit the bill, it's the colour Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffanys.

Loving this thread!

I found a new clarins raspberry lipstick in my drawer this morning that I haven’t been brave enough to wear before.
I put it on with my finger (thankyou for the tip!)
I braved the outside world and everything Smile

zippyswife · 16/10/2017 18:55

You may have another get convert to bold lipstick here. Can anyone recommend a colour for a red head with fair skin/pink undertones?

stoplickingthetelly · 16/10/2017 19:50

Love how others are being converted too. Thanks so much for all the advice, especially the tip of using your finger to create a type of stain rather than full on colour. Some of mine are liquid lipsticks though so this wouldn't work. Anyone got any recommendations for a blue based red and some berry tone lipsticks? I'd rather not spend too much (maybe up to mac prices) until I know I'll wear them. Also if anyone can recommend blushers to match that would be great too. Love how everyone is so supportive. Thanks ladies.

You can always use the same lipstick as blusher if necessary. Just sheer it out a bit with fingers.

I'm not that great with budget lipsticks in all honesty as I find the exhaustive search usually comes in more expensive than buying just the one high end one that you wanted. Kiko are the only ones that really impress me at their price point, just avoid their very cheapest line as those don't have much staying power, you want the ones with the nicer packaging. Their lip pencils are good also.

zippy my friend with similar colouring likes Tom Ford Wild Ginger (which is great on many skin colours) and YSL Rouge Rock. Definitely go for it, fair redheads look amazing with bold lips, especially red.

I did actually end up swinging by the Bobbi Brown counter today to check out Your Majesty. Too plummy for me unfortunately and I remembered why I always overlook their lippies, far too creamy to my tastes. Dior looked to have some great new colours in, I have their 999 which is a bit of a classic.

stoplickingthetelly · 16/10/2017 20:18

I remember my great nan putting her lipstick on her cheeks. Maybe I'll give it a go. I do usually prefer a powder blush though. I've got really dry lips so tend to do better with creamier lipstick that's probably why I like the Bobbi Brown ones. Anything too matte I find drying. You're probably right about cheaper lipsticks being a false economy. I might be better heading to a counter so I can try them out. I've got quite pigmented lips naturally so they always look different on. Shame Your Majesty is too plummy in real life. I'm not brave enough yet.

Well too plummy for me, my base colour leans a bit bluish/purple so it accentuates that. I think if you're a bit rosier in the lips than it would be more flattering.

I have an unhealthy obsession with Surratt blushes but they're quite pricey. They're a powder formula that blend beautifully but don't appear powdery but not like a liquid either. It sort of melds into the skin somehow. The little Bourjois pots are well liked generally for less money.

Does anyone have Cruella by Nars? I remember they were everywhere at some point as they came in subscription boxes or as a reward. It always seemed like a nice colour and those giant pencil type lipsticks are pretty handy.

stoplickingthetelly · 16/10/2017 20:55

Just been having a look at the blushers on cult beauty. Do you know if you can see them in real life anywhere? Or are they just online? Don't think I'd want to part with that kind of money without trying it first. Colours on the Internet are deceptive.

OP posts:
botemp · 16/10/2017 21:27

Surratt? Only in the larger department stores in London I think, Harvey Nichols, Harrods, and Liberty's I think. La Vie en Rose is the most universal flattering one. I have that as well as Parfait and another whose name escapes me now. I've been on the waiting list for forever for Chaleur and La Rosee du Soir. I have the Grisaille contour shade as well which I adore even though I'm not a massive contour fan at all. They are pricey and the packaging is quite basic unless you get the palette as well, if you can get to a counter I'd definitely have a look first.

Squashit · 16/10/2017 21:41

My current favourite lipstick is NYX Aria. Once on it says put with no feathering. It is a purple magenta shade and matte but doesn’t pull too blue.

I feel odd without my bright lipstick on and don’t do nudes as they wash me out. Same with light pinks. I have a high contrast colouring so need a lipstick that is high contrast too.

stoplickingthetelly · 16/10/2017 21:47

I'm in the north west so nowhere near London. Think it'll stick with my Bobbi brown ones. Wouldn't buy something expensive without trying it first.

squashit a few people have recommended nyx so think I'll check them out when I'm next in a big boots. Do you find it drying though? Hate the dry, set feeling.

OP posts:
Auldspinster · 16/10/2017 23:00

I love Aria too. The nyx matte lipsticks aren't drying and last for ages.

brapbrapbrap · 16/10/2017 23:11

I'd recommend a lip stain rather than a lippy. You won't even know you're wearing it, so won't feel self conscious.

I rock these stains on a daily basis: https://www.thebodyshop.com/en-gb/make-up/cheeks/lip-cheek-stain/p/p000657?utmsource=GoogleePLA&utmmedium=semmbrd&utmcampaign=1610044PXShoppingBrandMakeUp&utmterm=%7BKeyWordTerm%7D&utmmcontent=GenericTrade&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxvP6rJT21gIVxSnTCh1CCg-EAQYASABEgJYLLDBwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CJO49q-U9tYCFSqHUQodiNMIKQ

blueshoes · 16/10/2017 23:58

I only ever wear MAC media satin, which is a dark berry/plum colour, whether in the day or night. It suits my skin tone to a T and is bold but natural I hope. I put lip balm on my lips and then apply the lipstick. That way, the lipstick comes off more thinly to look like a gloss rather than matt and dry (which MAC lipsticks have a tendency towards).

UkuleleRose · 17/10/2017 03:20

Thank you, Auld - I'll try that. :-)

buckeejit · 17/10/2017 09:03

I have loads of orangey red lipsticks after getting my colours 'done' & assigned as autumn. It was such a revelation to be deemed as suiting red lipstick ive never looked back!

I find it difficult to find any other colour that suits as also usually find nudes meh. I bought one of the L'Oréal balmain ones in fever the other day-it's orangey brown on me & a nice change.

Fave orangey reds that I can remember at the mo are
Bourjois- matte red in 001 I think
L'Oréal - Doutzens red
Mac-lady danger
Tom Ford wild ginger
Nars-Lana

I got a rose surratt blush in an advent calendar last year & like it. Also loving the Daniel Sandler water blush at the mo-think I'm a bit less Aunt Sally than usual with it!

buckeejit · 17/10/2017 09:06

Reclining do some lip butters that are sheer-candy apple is a red one

buckeejit · 17/10/2017 09:06

*revlon

DollyPartonsBeard · 17/10/2017 09:36

Buckeejit Candy Apple is a gorgeous colour but I've never managed to get it to stay on for more than five minutes - is there a trick to getting lip butters to stay on, or is the clue to their lack of longevity in the name?

buckeejit · 17/10/2017 09:40

I'm not a big fan of them tbh-they're not lipstick, stain or gloss! But they are semi sheer which pp was after. For moisturising type lipstsicks - lipstick queen I find vg

DeadButDelicious · 17/10/2017 09:57

I shall preface with saying I'm goth so I do tend toward more make up day to day than is probably usual. But I stick to the following rules,

  1. A bold lip means a simple eye.
  2. A bold eye means a simple lip.

For example, I love a red/black/plum lip but find that with a bold eye look its a bit much on me, so I'll team it with a simple winged eyeliner. I also love a dark smokey eye so if that's what I feel like I'll team it with a nude shade usually something like androgyny by Jeffree star (currently using la splash in stingray, excellent dupe, half the price).

stoplickingthetelly · 17/10/2017 11:20

Right ladies you have inspired me to be bolder so today I'm wearing a lipstick pencil by Maybelline called keep it classy. Tbh I had forgotten I had it and found it while I was sorting through my lipsticks. It's a berry shade, but more towards the pink end rather than purple. I feel good in it and I honestly think I do look a bit brighter and more put together than when I wear nudes.

buckeejit I would love to get my colours done. Have looked online loads of times, but can't figure it out myself. If anyone's got any ideas I've got fair skin, which I think is pretty neutral in tone. Eg chanel 020 type foundation, but have also worn ysl br20 and bobbi brown cool ivory, double wear ecru. Fairly dark brown hair (probably a 5 on a colour chart), but have blonde balayage at the moment. Eyes are light bluish green. Veins are a mixture of blue and green. Thanks for all the great advice. Style and Beauty is my favourite part of mumsnet.
