Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEWish since previous threads:

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

NEW since the last thread:

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

OCTOBER 2017: It's our snailaversary Cake! Our baby ripe toddler skins are about a year old now, or rather getting together on these threads about a year ago. I can't believe we're all still finding things to chat on about between the hair disasters. I know I always encourage a bit of catching up at the beginning of the new thread with how everyone's skin been progressing over the last couple of weeks/months but now I'm demanding more Blush and would really like to hear how everyone is doing a year on now, or however long you've been with us. Basically, pledge your undying love for these threads Grin

NB: I've removed the form from the OP as I felt there really wasn't a need for it anymore. I think I've also answered enough of those forms in their previous incarnation for a lifetime so it may just be a selfish decision but it's been made Halo

I rang up about Botox this week Blush
This is going to sound weird but my plan was tiny amounts. Anyway, I'm on a medication and likely to be for life
Turns out I can't have Botox or fillers. Is it odd I'm a bit Sad about it? I would have liked to have the option but I can't 😭

miffy2 · 07/12/2017 16:12

I wish Tesco here in Ireland stocked the Super Soaper range, can't think why they don't. Next time I am 'up north' I will have to check them out.

mintmagnummm · 07/12/2017 17:00

The soaper duper body washes are lovely! I like the ginger one best but have the fig one to try next

EnidButton · 07/12/2017 18:40

Not odd Olli. Feels unfair when an illness stops you from having a choice, no matter what it is and even if you decided not to have it. Would be nice to be able to choose like others can. Flowers

Mint I love the smell of ginger. Hope I can find that one.

Miffy That's so daft! Wonder why. You could say what kind of scents you like and we could advise if you think you can get them online?

userallusedup · 07/12/2017 18:44

Mint I just use the bioderma oil with my hands and get fairly minimal foaming but it’s not a dribbly, slippy, slidey type oil either. I love it!

Olli I’ve swithering and dithering about Botox & fillers for ages, but I’d be Sad too if they definitely weren’t an option.

Still no Kiko, still not even with yodel Angry

miffy2 · 07/12/2017 19:15

Enid i love ginger, fig and all things citrus (which is why I want all the ones mentioned lol). I usually go up to Belfast a couple of times a year and take advantage of a proper Body Shop discount so I might go after Christmas and stop off at the big Tesco on the way home.

user Yodel appear to be worse than ever this time of year, lots of people on another thread giving out (including me) about them and House of Fraser and how they have mucked up a lot of deliveries. Fingers crossed your Kiko stuff gets to you asap.

userallusedup · 07/12/2017 20:55

Miffy I’m not sure if I can even blame yodel as it doesn’t seem to be with them yet. Guess kiko must be despatched from Italy so it’s trucking across Europe.

I forget to mention yesterday that Selfridges sell IT cosmetics now Mint if you wanted to test it or try and get a sample.

botemp · 07/12/2017 23:22

SCAC Day 8: 50% off CC Creams from Biodroga MD and 30% off Beauté Pacifique.

Banivani, if you're still around, what was it you were trying from them and liking (BP) again, or am I making this up?

mintmagnummm · 08/12/2017 06:32

Thanks user I don't go into London hardly ever so won't be near a selfridges unfortunately, but it's good to know just incase....

mintmagnummm · 08/12/2017 07:21

Just realised that was terrible English, it annoys me when people use a double negation a sentence and I've now just done it 🙄. What I meant to say is "I hardly ever go in to London" 🤣🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤪

mintleaves · 08/12/2017 15:10

Hello everyone,

I got some great advice on earlier threads and have been merrily lurking ever since. I'm headed to Australia for Christmas and had a couple of questions that I'm wondering if anyone can help with...

  1. I'm looking for recommendations for a fairly basic, hydrating serum. I've just run out of Buffet and though it was fine I wasn't in love with it. I just want something for an extra layer of hydration for the flight/hot sun when I get there (or any recs for best practice skincare during long flights in general; my skin veers towards the dry/sensitive and planes usually make it much worse.)
  1. Does anyone have any recommendations for products I should pick up while there? I spent a great deal of time last time I was there delighting in the wealth of unfamiliar brands and products in the pharmacy near my hotel, but chickened out and just came home with a million bottles of PawPaw balm.

Many thanks.

userallusedup · 08/12/2017 19:16

Mintleaves I use Deciem’s hylamide serum and love it but others here are not so keen. I don’t really have any best practice recs for flying as rarely do long haul and I’ve never been to Australia. Lucky you though, I’d love to go especially at this time of year as I hate the British winter.

Mint selfridges are in most major cities now but of course that won’t be helpful if you if you don’t live near one Smile

Kiko now with Yodel but no updates on when they might actually deliver it...they only got it today so doubt it will be soon.

mintmagnummm · 08/12/2017 19:24

User I'm in Essex Grin

I'm getting breakouts on my temples and near eyebrows which is very unusual for me, could it be shampoo and conditioner? 🤔. Still can't find one that agrees with me!

Tsmummy08 · 08/12/2017 20:32

Olli I don't think it's odd at all to feel upset when you a have choice taken away from you... and I'd be pretty fucked off if I couldn't get Botox any longer.... Things may change though - drugs that are contraindicated initially may be usable if new evidence emerges regarding their safety. Here's hoping!

Miffy I'm another ginger fan (slightly obsessive in fact) but wanted to thank you for the Retirides - I've used it a couple of times and my face hasn't fallen off, yay! I'll finish off the 0.5% I've got then will plough into the 1% properly in the New Year... Thanks again Flowers

Anyone else got the M&S advent calendar? There was some chat upthread but I've forgotten if anyone has it - I'm happy so far with the goodies with the exception of the Stila liquid lip, far too pale for me. Anyone want it? :)

EnidButton · 08/12/2017 20:33

Could be Mint. I've had spots on my scalp when using a shampoo that wasn't right.

I attempted to wave my hair for the first time since the disastrous haircut way back in feb (?!). It looks terrible! So annoyed. Don't have the energy to wash it again. I desperately need to get my act together and go to a salon. 💇🏻‍♀️

EnidButton · 08/12/2017 20:36

It looks almost exactly like this. Not quite the French style I'm aiming for. 🙄 Seriously, it's uncanny. I really really need my fringe back.

🐌 Fantastic Skincare: The Snailaversary and Winter is Coming, Luckily, we're Part Sheep 🐑
botemp · 08/12/2017 20:50

Ehm... is that a man or a woman? I need to get to a salon as well, but it's the perfect length right now and I couldn't handle it being chopped too much all over again. Despite that I'm considering going back to the same salon as it was technically cut really well, testament to the fact that it's in great shape (model wise and hair condition) despite it being months ago, maybe it would be safe enough for just a trim?

Olli, I'd be annoyed too if an option suddenly was no longer available but Botox and Fillers have sort of reached their saturation point and then some, there's a lot more of interest these days that goes beyond the injectable and that aren't surgical with better-looking results. More money, obviously, but that's always the case.

mintleaves, I have no Australian product recs beyond liking the super spendy MV Organics oils. I'd definitely take a sheet mask or two for on the plane. Depending on where you're headed there's quite a few AB shops in Australia if you'd be interested in those. Simple hydrating serum, I quite like the Vichy Mineral 89 (only just a bit left in it) but it's a glass bottle so not that travel-friendly. Very simple is the Superdrug Simply Pure Hydrating Serum.

It's a man! Playing Prince Phillipe of Versailles. French produced tv series but everyone in it is English, playing French people. He's lovely but I don't want my hair to look like a glossy 17th century royal wig. I think I'll leave the extra hair waving until I have my fringe back.

botemp · 08/12/2017 21:29

You could always get a little fringe whig Grin

Is it also in French? Please don't tell me it's English actors with French actors... is it the show Versailles? Was it any good?

OP posts:
botemp · 08/12/2017 21:30

*wig not whig!

OP posts:
mintmagnummm · 08/12/2017 21:35

Bo Whig has really made me chuckle 🤣

EnidButton · 08/12/2017 21:48

A Whinge perhaps? Would be an appropriate name considering the amount I have moaned about it.

It is a series called Versailles. Everyone speaks English with English accents. They play fast and loose with historical accuracy but it's very entertaining. Similar to The Tudors series. Alex Vlahos (man in glossy wig) is very good. There's been 2 series so far.

botemp · 08/12/2017 21:57

Between the two of us, we could definitely start the Whinge Party, Enid. Good hair for all!

I'd heard of it but never really looked into the reviews, I did enjoy the Tudors in the beginning so I'll add Versailles to the Christmas watch list.

Enid a side parting might make you look a bit less like Prince Philippe Grin and you can indeed get clip on fringes, I had one years ago think I got it on qvc. My hair was jet black at the time so it was easy to get a colour match and I have very thick hair so I could easily hide the clips. I was fringeless by choice at the time but it was nice being able to have one when I wanted. I’ve got a longish side swept effort at the moment, I trim it myself due to Hairdresser Phobia.

Mint I get breakouts on my scalp if shampoos don’t agree with me, which seems to be most of them - I stick to Eucerin now. Not ideal for my frizzy hair but it’s either that or a sore scalp. I use the Eucerin shampoo and tonic on my scalp, & conditioners, lotions and potions on the lengths only.

userallusedup · 08/12/2017 22:15

Tsmummy I didn’t get any of the advent calendars but have been enjoying reading some of the reviews on here. I’m glad I didn’t buy one though as they all contain too much stuff I just wouldn’t use. If there had been a makeup only one with decent brands I’d probably have gone for it.

Glad you’re enjoying it but I’ll pass on the Stila - I’m dark so suspect it would be too light for me too and a lot of people on the M&S thread said it made them look like a corpse Grin
