I often see these recommended to people. Has anyone been to, used one? What happens? What is it like?

And can they handle people who dislike their appearance so much they can't bear to look in mirrors?

One of my daughters was a personal shopper.

They should know the shop and know it's stock very well. They should listen very carefully first of all to what you want, what you need, and then go round the shop with you and talk about the clothes, suggest some outfits to try, and see how you get on. You should feel unhurried and relaxed. They should be tactful but honest about how you look, but not impose their own style.

Thanks, that is helpful to know.
