Best brands for nail varnish

I know the in-thing nowadays is to go to a nail salon or buy the gel polishes and do the UV lamp hardener thing, but it's just not me. I want to keep it simple and just use normal nail varnish from a bottle that I can apply myself and take off with normal nail varnish remover when I can be arsed. I'm happy to splash out and am not looking for a specific colours, more for a reliable product that I can buy in a few different shades. Please hit me with your tried and tested at-home nail varnish brands! Thanks!

I love Dior

RedPanda25 · 11/10/2017 14:16

I really like Essie which you can get in boots and also Barry M.

Pommes · 11/10/2017 14:18

I've got lots of Essie and Opi nail polish, but recently (as the result of a 3 for 2 deal) have been reminded that No7 is really good too.

MeatAndPotato · 11/10/2017 14:21

Maybelline is not to be sniffed at (the 7day gel one) also love Essie, OPI and Mavala

poppym12 · 11/10/2017 14:23

Barry m here. Always use a base and top coat, lasts ages.

Highlove · 11/10/2017 14:23

OPI is my fave. I think it lasts longest.

Daisy62 · 11/10/2017 14:27

I like Mavala, good value and I find the quality is fine. Also it comes in tiny bottles - I have never used up a normal sized bottle in other brands, before it's gone hard and sticky.

MagicMoneyTree · 11/10/2017 14:33

Thanks so much for all the recommendations. Will definitely have a look at some of those and make a start on improving my rather pathetic-looking collection!

poppym12 do you use the same make of base/top coat too or do you have a secret weapon?

Revlon gel ones, especially with their Diamond Top coat (which I use over everything).

IHaveBrilloHair · 11/10/2017 14:37

Nails Inc and Leighton Denny are my favourite nice brands, but I'm also happy with Barry M, Rimmel and suprisingly Asda have some great ones.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 11/10/2017 14:39

Mavala

Lovely colours and just enough to us up before getting bored with it.

MagicMoneyTree · 11/10/2017 14:40

IHaveBrilloHair never seem to have much luck with Rimmel. It never seems to last. Will try some of the others though. Thanks!

I honestly think it's hit and miss, you can get a brilliant one, and then buy another shade and its shit.

Botanicbaby · 11/10/2017 15:15

I'm with you OP I'm sick of those gel manicures and have gone back to basics doing it myself with normal polishes.

The best ever brand I've used yet is Eve Snow! Try it and you'll (hopefully) see what I mean, I noticed the difference as I applied it. Gorgeous colours too.

nigelsbigface · 11/10/2017 15:17

Primark. Surprisingly good.

Ilikethai · 11/10/2017 15:18

I’ve tried a huge range of nail varnish and I mainly stick with OPI and Essie as they are all opaque in 2 coats. What really makes a difference to staying power is the Seche Vite top coat - absolute game changer in terms of making your polish stay on longer than 3 days so I highly recommend this to prolong any nail varnish wear :)

MagicMoneyTree · 11/10/2017 15:22

I don't know why I didn't post here ages ago. Thanks so much for the tips everyone!

No, that's Barry M too.

Chocolou · 11/10/2017 15:55

Jessica is the best. If you apply properly I.e. Base, two coats of colour and top coat it can last up to 2 weeks. Their brilliance is THE best top coat ever. And their newish spray dryer really does dry your nails in 10 mins.

Argeles · 11/10/2017 15:56

Ciaté is the best brand for me.

Dishevelled09 · 11/10/2017 16:52

Essence from Wilkos. They are gel polishes, apply the top coat, lasts well, costs about £2 a bottle and comes off with normal nail varnish remover. Used to always be a mavala fan.
