Soap instead of shower gel

Just wanted to say that based on a thread I read on here probably a few months ago, I swapped my shower gel for soap (I think the original thread was about deodorant, as OP felt a bit whiffy not long after showering, but lots of people recommended switching shower gel for soap instead).
Anyway, the difference is remarkable! I went to a stupidly hot soft play with DS at the weekend, where I had to follow him round the bloody playframe for an hour, (which is a whole other thread!), and still felt pretty fresh that evening, which I never would have been before. Same for the mornings, I usually wake up feeling a bit stinky because I seem to get very hot overnight, but no more! I'm just using Simple soap bars, two for £1. Amazing!

I did the same! I now have Pears soap in my shower. TBH I haven't noticed a difference yet but I like the 'clean' smell of the soap. I am wearing wool directly against my skin (incl armpits) so will know this evening if it smells or not. So far it is ok.

IsItDinnerTimeYet · 06/10/2017 16:28

I've used Imperial Leather soap for over 40 years (even on my face and don't use any other face cleansing/moisturising product!) and so have all my mother's side of the family. I didn't realise people used shower gel instead of soap! I thought it was an additional thing to soap but have never really used it. Love this soap. Every day the smell still reminds me of my grandmother's bathroom!

TickleMcTickleFace · 06/10/2017 16:30

I've been using soap instead of shower gel since I read this thread and I'm a convert! My back is the clearest it's been for months and my skin is so soft. I've been using the green Savon Marseilles (lavender and something I think?) and a random soap I nicked from a hotel.

FiveShelties · 06/10/2017 18:12

Thanks barchester - I have never used soap because I thought it would make the shower more difficult to clean - not sure why I thought that.

moggle · 06/10/2017 18:47

I find the bath gets dirtier quicker when I'm showering with soAp, but we are in a very hard water area and it's a small price to pay anyway.

Ktown · 06/10/2017 18:51

White spirit vinegar squeezed on the bath a couple of times a week will get rid of the salt build up due to soap scum

MotherofPearl · 06/10/2017 19:15

Five, I've always used soap and DP always uses shower gel. I can't say I notice any difference in how the shower screens look afterwards, but we always spray on a bit of shower spray at the end of each shower which stops soap scum build up.

Can anyone recommend a Lush soap that smells lovely??

Enjoying the parsley porridge soap, at the moment, but the honey I washed the kids soap smells great and is the one we get when we don't fancy anything else. The last one before the Parsley one was snowcastle which was pretty gorgeous but is a seasonal one - it looks like this is this Christmas' offering, which looks a little lumpy! uk.lush.com/products/christmas/saucy-snowcake

Some of them are a lot more exotic and heady, but I don't get along with scents like that, even if they're nice for a sniff in the shop.

LoniceraJaponica · 06/10/2017 20:56

BoredOnMatLeave I don't rub the soap on my body, but put it on my hands and then wash myself with my hands.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 06/10/2017 22:08

Not noticed a problem with soap scum in the shower so far, but I do keep a squeegee in the shower and the last person in has to wipe down the glass!

Gertiegoolash · 06/10/2017 22:15

Lush Respect Your Elders soap is my fave, smells gorgeous and doesn't dry my skin out

FiveShelties · 06/10/2017 22:17

Excellent - thanks everyone. I have enough lovely soap to use for showers for around 20 years (or more).

BoreOfWhabylon · 06/10/2017 22:26

I do wish someone would invent a way for us to post examples of smells, like we can images and sounds Sad

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/10/2017 23:02

I find soap is much better wrt scum in the shower. When we used shower gel we had a horrible orange tinged scum ,not got that at all with soap.

Oldraver · 06/10/2017 23:08

I've been using goats milk soap on my face for a while (tried the Waitrose vegetable soap but was too drying) and has been the only thing ny face tolerated AND didnt dry out.

So I've been using this and simple soap on my pits as I do get smelly by the end of the day and frequently smelled not long after a shower with shower gel

The goats stuff is expensive but doesn't affect my skin

wizzywig · 06/10/2017 23:48

Sheesh there are zillions of nesti dante soaps on amazon. How can i possibly decide? Is £4.75 what most people are generally paying for their soaps?

Beautifullymixed · 07/10/2017 01:25

I posted on the 'whiffy armpit' thread, as I've been a soap user for years due to the perimenapausal hot flushes.
I just feel so much more clean and fresh - and less paranoid about odours.

I adore unwrapping new soaps, and love being the first to use a new soap. Smile

I treated myself to a Nesti Dante soap because of that thread, and it was delivered yesterday.
The excitement!
It's massive, and smells absolutely delicious. I went for the lavender after far too long thinking about it, and eagerly used it this morning, and tonight before bed.

My ds11 and ds13 eagerly pounced on it this morning in the shower before school, as they are soap lovers too, and have loved hearing about the recent thread.
They loved the smell on their skin, and I love how fresh they still smell at the end of the day - especially their feet!

I use soap on my face (after double cleansing) and also use it on my fanjo, inside the labia and out - with no problems whatsoever. Have washed this way for years, and don't intend to stop anytime soon.

I love soap! Grin

SleepingBooty · 07/10/2017 01:45

Onlyonatuesday I recommend LusLush shampoo bar

MotherofPearl · 07/10/2017 08:11

Beautifullymixed, in you I have found my soap soulmate! Grin

BarchesterFlowers · 07/10/2017 08:19

Wizzy, I pay that but for handmade soap. I buy soap sometimes when I go to France or Italy but otherwise I stick to small producers, mostly Mull unless I go somewhere where I see something I like the look of.

BoreOfWhabylon · 07/10/2017 08:55

The beauty of soap is that even the expensive ones last far, far longer than any bottle of shower gel, especially if the soap is seasoned first by unwrapping and leaving in underwear drawer for a few months.

The L'Occitane one I buy costs about £8.00 for an enormous 250g bar, which lasts around 6 months.

Just ordered some Nesti Dante 'Capri' soap too.... 🐑Blush

Beautifullymixed · 07/10/2017 09:34

We shall all smell divine!

I use my shower puff to get a really good lather going, then off I go. I then rinse it all off, and soap up my armpits, underboob area, fanny and arse (to quote a PP) again.
I am so clean I squeak!
No dryness or rashes at all.
I smell good enough to eat - or so I'm told! WinkWink

Palm oil, Palmate is a big issue if you care about deforestation. Most glycerine is palm oil derived so it's no better.

We don't have a soap dish in our shower but have this Simple Human caddy which is great for keeping everyone's bits and pieces.
www.simplehuman.com/bath-tools/shower-caddy

I use soap or shower gel depending on my mood. I will have to observe if my pits do better with soap.

And yes! I longed for the bronnley lemon soap too.
