Complete hair dye novice - help!

I'm a natural red head, although I'll be 40 next year and it's going towards a browny copper now rather than the vibrant auburn I had when I was younger. My hair is really thick - both wiry and lots of it. I've always loved my hair colour. It's been the one thing about my body that I really liked. And now I'm getting a few grey hairs along my hairline (well, they're the ones that I can see) and I'm really wanting not to have them!

I'm contemplating getting my hair dyed but am completely clueless and find the whole idea terrifying. I've never had any colour in my hair - ever. How do you find a salon that's good at colouring? How do I know what colour or effects to get? I'm tempted to do slightly more vibrant than I have just now but then I'm terrified it looks awful.

I'd also read about henna as I thought that might be something I could do at home and save £££s in salon charges but not sure if this would be a better option. Since I'm so clueless I feel I might be better getting a professional to do it?

Any help/suggestions really appreciated!
