What color gold setting for my diamond studs?

For everyday jewelry, I always wear my engagement and wedding rings, both set in platinum, and usually a white gold (tiny) "diamonds by the yard" necklace. Sometimes I swap out the white gold necklace for an antique yellow gold one. For going out I often wear a larger "fun" faux yellow gold necklace.

I have a big birthday coming up and in response to my very strong "hint" my DH is going to buy me a pair of diamond studs, probably around .5 - .75 carats each. Somehow I've always pictured that they would be yellow gold, like my mum has. But would that clash with my other white gold/platinum jewelry? How much do you even notice the setting on diamonds studs anyway?

I like clashing golds but for solitaire diamonds I think white gold/platinum goes best as it blends in with the diamonds.

My engagement ring has a rose gold band but platinum setting for the diamonds. My wedding ring is platinum eternity ring and I also wear a diamonds by the yard necklace but in rose gold. So yeah, I like a mix!

Pigofwar , your things sound lovely. I love mixing metals too. It's so restrictive to wear just one type. I have a lot of jewelry inherited from my mum and grandmother, and the trends for different colored metals have changed so much over time.

For something that expensive that you will presumably have for years, I wouldn't go with white gold, just because it yellows over time. I would either have yellow gold, if you like it, or silver or platinum.

Doesn't yellow go better with some skin types and white with others. If you look at your wrist and if the veins look green you're meant to do yellow if they look blue it's meant to be white.
Mine are green so I tend to wear yellow gold more and I think yellow suits me better than white.

It also depends what setting you are going for. In a traditional claw setting, you don't see much of the metal colour apart from the prongs at the corners. If you're going for a rubover setting, however, then the metal colour is more prominent as the diamond is encircled by the metal bezel.

Diamond studs are a daytime look to me so I'd go with platinum (or white gold). I also think white metals bring out diamonds a bit better.

Good point, BadTasteFlump . These are going to be the most expensive piece of jewelry I've ever had other than my rings and I definitely plan to have them FOREVER. I do think it takes quite a long time for white gold to start yellowing, though. It hasn't happened yet to my white gold necklace after almost 10 years. Also I'm told it's pretty easy to have white gold re-dipped in rhodium when it starts to yellow, but I've never done it so I don' know. Good food for thought, thanks!

I mix all my Metallica together anyway - silver necklace, gold earrings and rose gold ring.

White gold earrings don't really fade to yellow noticeably since they don't rub on much. The only part that might is where the backs slide tightly onto the post, but you wouldn't be looking at that bit anyway.

White gold rings do as they scrape against other rings and whatever you're touching, so they do need re-plating.

Yesterday I had my eternity ring re-plated. It cost me £25 and took half an hour, at a jeweller in Hatton Garden while I waited. Looks fab.

Mind are white gold , got for platinum for a classic look imo

Moonbells, which jeweller was that? Mine need replating which I've been putting off, and I've got a course at Hatton Garden tomorrow, so might be handy to get it done then.

I prefer white gold or platinum for diamond settings so I'd do that over gold.

You can fancy them up by purchasing "earring jackets" which you could consider setting in yellow gold if you want to mix and match.

I think it depends what you wear mostly.
I'm a yellow gold person, but my engagement ring diamond is set in white gold, so the setting isn't as obvious.
Then again, I also wear a couple of bits of silver, and I have a pair of rose gold studs with a diamond in the middle. So it really is up to you

I don’t really suit silver so white gold/platinum is out for me.

All my jewellery including wedding/engagement ring and diamond earrings and lots of lovely items DH “invested” in from Tiffany are all set in yellow gold.

As you say the earnings are an expensive investment and as such I’d go with what you are likely to wear with them most - which presumably be your rings given you wear those all the time.

For the extra cost of platinum I’d choose that over white gold. It’s more durable and these are lifetime items. Equally the earnings will look lovely with a Tiffany DBTY necklace (I have one also in yellow gold I wear with my diamond studs) so I’d definitely match the settings to that ie silver not yellow.

Frankly you can buy good quality yellow gold fake diamond studs if you wanted to wear those with a gold necklace.

For the “real thing” I’d want them to match the other most important pieces of jewellery I had and tbh even though I have yellow gold I actually think diamonds do look better set in white gold or platinum but as I said it just does not suit my skin tone and colouring.

I love the fact they can be simple studs or made larger with the cartwheels.

You used to be able to buy the cartwheels in yellow gold (not sure if they still do that) so one option might be platinum studs with yellow gold cartwheels which would mean you could wear them with either.

yes thats what I got charged. I had previously asked the original seller of the ring to quote and they had said £40. Reckon I got a better deal. Though the one in HG did say a year was about right for redoing and not to do too often as it thins the ring slightly when they do the polishing.

Claw set white diamonds always look better in white gold or platinum. It makes the diamond bigger and brighter looking. Your skin tone isn't really a factor with a simple claw set pair of studs. I've had white gold claw set earrings for years and they haven't yellowed at all. I've only had my rings re-plated once in 12 years and they look as new. Go for a quality place rather than a cheap chain and expect to go well over budget as the nice dias in a good size are very expensive

I think a yellow gold setting looks far better. I have white gold ones and yellow gold ones inherited from my grandmother. The yellow gold ones look far more eye catching as the sparkle of the diamonds stand out against the gold. Avoid Hatton garden, too -- rip off!

The dias in the yellow are probably better quality if they sparkle more.
