Coconut oil. I use it on myself and on DD1 who has eczema.

TickledOnion · 05/10/2017 17:55

Please don't use baby shampoo around sensitive skin. You may as well use washing up liquid!

lampert · 05/10/2017 17:59

@Dalesgirl16 i have eczema and most make up removers sting or irritate my skin. I used to use baby oil or coconut oil but recently I bought a pack of cheeky wipes (mini reusable microfibre cloths) and just take make up off using one damp with warm water. No chemicals or irritants whatsoever. I use one a day and stick them in a net bag and wash with my towels and they're told as new.

cannaethink · 05/10/2017 20:42

I've recently had dry and sore eyelids, no idea what brought it on, but jojoba oil is what I normally use to remove eye make up.

DrRisotto · 05/10/2017 20:46

Don't use any chemicals at all op. I use the makeup eraser, it's a (micro fibre probably?) cloth. Look it up on amazon but there are cheaper ones with good reviews too. Anyway, you just run it under warm water and it takes off all makeup, even water resistant mascara! I love it and highly recommend it.

Neutrogena makeup remover wipes (the purple packet). I read that I shouldn't be using wipes on my face and so switched to a micellar water and ended up with terrible dermatitis. Swapped to try pretty much every "sensitive" eye mu remover around all of them stung either skin or eyes including the body shop stuff (& the Gaia baby shampoo which was recd by a GP).

Went back to the wipes and cleared up within a few days Confused

Lush's ultrabland is fantastic - smear it on dry skin and remove with a soft warm flannel, doesn't need any rubbing and is v v gentle. Don't rate lush for anything else but love love love ultrabland.

I have name changed as it could be outing.
My eyelids are in bits - I have an allergy but to what I don't know.
I can't narrow it down.
Is it the remover, the cotton wool used to remove the product or the actual eye pencil ???
I used an eye pencil.
All day all good, no problems.
I remove it at night.
Next morning my eyelids / under eye area are really swollen and red. This has continued over the past few days with the eye lid skin flaking off.
So not a good look !!!! Smile
Aghhh.
It's either the remover or the cotton wool I think.
Has anyone ever been allergic to cotton wool?

lampert · 06/10/2017 17:04

@allergia I'd really suggest you try the make up eraser cloth or just a standard microfibre cloth. There's nothing to irritate your skin then. But prob best to leave your eyelids completely bare and make up free for a good few days to let them recover first

BrendaSmith56 · 06/10/2017 17:16

I have psoriasis on my eyelids and use coconut oil. It's very soothing.

missjoanie · 06/10/2017 17:35

The only thing that doesn’t make my sensitive eyes flare up is good old fashioned Vaseline. Great for removing waterproof mascara.

Dalesgirl16 · 07/10/2017 20:40

Can I ask if anyone has been prescribed anything from the doctor for dermatitis around the eyes? I went to the dr for it and he gave me eumovate and it's actually got worse.

Justawaterformeplease · 07/10/2017 20:45

Is it definitely the eye make up remover? I used to have the same problem, then started using Boots No 7 sensitive mascara and now I never get it regardless of what i use to take it off.

PETRONELLAS · 07/10/2017 20:45

I had blepharitis which was horrendous dry scaly skin on my eyelids.
Firstly I threw out mascaras, washed brushes etc.
Decleor cleansing water was good at cleaning without any stinging.
The GP recommended Johnson’s but I knew this would be horrendous as it’s not a mild formula.
Primark do those cleansing microfibre cloths. Meant to be brilliant.

CremeBrulee · 07/10/2017 20:50

I’ve had terrible eyelid dermatitis a few times, usually brought on by an allergy to a makeup product. There are very few eyeliner or mascara items that I can wear without my eyes falling to bits.

From bitter experience, the best thing I have found to clean my eyes with are the specialist eyelid cleaning wipes like Systane. They are quite expensive but if you have sore scratchy eyes the price is worth paying for the relief they bring.

Use a wipe to cleans the eye, and then gently wipe over with warm water. Use a very gentle eye gel or a little la Roche Posay Cicaplast skin recovery. Never put eye gel or cream on the lid, using a tapping motion with a finger to apply a little product below the lower lashes and under the brow bone.

Sorry for essay, subject close to my heart.

CremeBrulee · 07/10/2017 20:52

PS - don’t use Eumovate or anything thick like that, the fine, thin skin or your eyelids just can’t cope with it.

allergia · 08/10/2017 08:20

Thank you to those who replied.
Like the OP I think it's the remover or cotton wool I'm allergic too so shall try the Primark microfibre cloth and if that doesn't work the Systane.

Alwaysatyke · 08/10/2017 08:46

OP, you say the GP's prescribed eumovate - a steroid cream? Is it periorbital dermatitis? This is often triggered by steroids. From experience I'd say most GPs are bad at treating it properly - if it's bad dermatitis you need a dermatologist. If that's what it is I'd say stop using the steroid cream or anything else, it'll get worse short term but will eventually improve. If it doesn't it might need antibiotics.

Disclaimer - not a HCP but I've suffered with severe psoriasis and perioral dermatitis for years and this is my experience of GPs not recognising any of it. When it's not bad I find la roche posay I'd a lovely gentle cleanser :)

allergia · 08/10/2017 08:52

La Roche Posay - I am allergic to that too I think, though it could be something in the cotton wool. A bleaching agent or something.
I have been taking anti histamine tablets as my eye lids were so swollen. It was difficult to keep my eyes open Sad
Sorry OP for hijacking thread to an extent.

Alwaysatyke · 08/10/2017 09:05

I guess the other thing to add is that stopping using makeup altogether will make a big difference as anything you put there will irritate skin that's already struggling, especially around the eyes where it's so delicate and prone to infection

Dalesgirl16 · 08/10/2017 11:18

Funny you should say it’s caused by steroids. I’m pretty sure it has happened every time I take my make up off with the make up remover but I have dermatitis in my right hand from washing dishes without gloves on too. I was given a very potent steroid called Clobaderm for it and tried that on my eye but not sure if that made it worse. Certainly this current outbreak hasn’t been treated with Clobaderm. I know I need to see a dermatologist as I have rosacea and KP untreated too! I might start with buying coconut oil. I will not wear makeup til it’s better but no way can I always go without

Dalesgirl16 · 08/10/2017 11:19

What face washes do you ladies with eczema and dermatitis use? I have been. Using la Roche Posay!

OP posts:
PurplePillowCase · 08/10/2017 12:40

soap.
good old fashioned bar soap.

PurplePillowCase · 08/10/2017 12:41

to explain: I take off eye make up with moustriser on loo paper cotton wool and then wash my face with soap & flannel.

KadabrasSpoon · 08/10/2017 12:42

It's not actually a make up remover but Blephasol for blepharitis gets eye make up like a dream!
