What to wear in Rome in October?

Just looking for advice on what I need to pack really?
Is it really warm enough for shorts and dresses or should I take jeans and tops?
What jacket would you recommend a blazer or a denim jacket?

You might still be able to wear a short during the day if it is the beginning of the month but it will be cold in the evening anyway.
I would go with layers and mix. You can take your jeans jacket, it will look nice on the dress, but I would take a wool jumper and a scarf to put underneath.

I'm off to Barcelona in October. Am thinking denim jacket, lightweight scarf, merino sweater, jeans, khakis, Breton Ts, midi dress...

Barcelona is a lot warmer than Rome. I used to live there and go to the beach and in the sea till late october.

We went to Rome last October half term. It was hot in the daytime, really hot, we stayed at the seaside and swam in the sea. Bit cooler in the evenings but still nice.

We went to Rome in October 2015 and it was pleasantly warm, not hot. It got up to 21 degrees, but was cloudy. It certainly wasn't shorts weather. We wore jeans, T-shirts and hoodie/cardigan. I'm glad we took cagoules as it rained on the last day.

More importantly wear comfortable shoes. You will do insane amounts of walking.
