What to wear for an evening wedding reception?

It is many years since I have been to a large wedding and I have been invited to the evening reception of a work colleague.

Do people wear "evening" dresses or much the same as day dresses for a wedding.

I am very fat (!) with large hips/thighs. About 5'7" tall.

Was thinking maybe this dress is a possible - it is a shape I like, but is it too much like a black tie type dress rather than evening wedding?

Yes. A bit too formal. Could you do palazzo pants and a tunic? That would look good. Navy or dark green would work well.

I have some black palazzo trousers (although i rarely wear them). I will find them and try them on again. Thank you

Reception only?

I’d do a knee length (ish) dress or a trousers and lovely top combo.

Unless it’s a fancy black tie affair in which case your suggested option is lovely (or if the price is right but and have it hemmed)

Thank you - the dress is reduced to £50 and is mid calf.

But I think it is a bit formal for the wedding so back there the drawing board. It’s rare that I find a dress that fits well and is comfortable to wear!

I don't think it's too formal, it looks very elegant and if you feel good in it then why not?

Always better to be overdressed, imo.

Unless black tie is specified cocktail wear is in call but with the usual wedding rules, no black, no white, a bit more on the tasteful end of the spectrum rather than edgy and so on.
