Work bag: what to put your laptop etc in?

I travel for work a fair bit. As in different places each day, not heading to a New York office or anything so glam.

I have for a while been using an old samsonite rucksack thing for my laptop, papers and all the other extraneous crap I cart about. It isn't terribly pretty but it's also not great for my clothes - I've damaged a couple of nice jackets which have got rub marks where the bottom of the rucksack meets my back.

What do you use that is comfortable and convenient, and ideally isn't totally ugly? And doesn't damage your clothes? I guess all rucksacks would? I'd really prefer a rucksack (I carry a handbag too) but not if the price is damaged clothes.

Should have said: i go everywhere by public transport, hence desire for something comfortable and convenient.

Cambridge Satchel Company satchel. Mine's just the right size for my lappy, but they come in lots of sizes if you need more room. If you're feeling fancy, they'll emboss your install onto it.
