What eyeshadow palette's do you like?

I have the Urban Decay Named 2 palette which is fine but not AH-MAZING, I think with the paler shades, it's hard to get pigmentation but the darker shades are really pigmented.

I would like another one that's not so neutral. With that in mind, I've come up with three palettes that I like the look of:

Urban Decay Naked 3
Urban Decay Heat
Modern Renaissance by Anastasia Beverly Hills

I liked the look of the Huda palettes but they're probably a bit above budget.

Does anyone have any of these and like them/or have any other recommendations for palettes that they love? Again, less of a brown-toned palette would be preferable

I find Naked 3 a bit pointless. All the colours are too similar. My DD swatched Naked Heat and loved it, but it's very warm and I think only works really well on yellow toned skin. ABH MR is beautiful, but the payoff isn't great on the lighter colours. It's also expensive for what it is.

It might be worth trying some dupes before you commit - Makeup Revolution Newtrals vs Neutrals is a good dupe for Naked Heat. Makeup Revolution Fortune Favours the Brave is a great palette for trying out unusual colours. W7 Delicious is supposed to be a great dupe for ABH MR.

Alternatively, get a magnetic palette like this one and choose some singles eyeshadows to fill it yourself and get the combo you want.

I think the ones you have mentioned are all very warm toned, so would be best suited if you have a warmer skin tone.

I am quite a collector of palettes, most are limited edition but some of my most used that are still available to purchase are:

• MAC Warm Neutral x 15 palette
• My custom made MAC palettes (just buy an empty palette plus the refills, it's a lot of fun picking the colours!)
• Stila eyes are the window palettes

Most big brands will be offering their holidays sets for Xmas in the coming month, so if it were me I'd hold out until then as many will be great value. I personally have my eye on the new Marc Jacobs holiday eyeshadow palette that is coming:

I recently had a clear out of all palettes and pared down to the minimum of things I absolutely love. I had so many sleek palettes I never used that all got donated to friends.

Now all I have are things I rate very highly and use a lot;

ABH Modern renaissance, LOVELY! Very warm toned and interesting reds for a a different look but still some great every sayers

Naked ultimate basics- all Matt, all tones, always useful for pairing with anything.

Stila in the garden- natural toned swimmers, my favourite colours plus a couple of jewel tones for going a bit fancy

Chanel quad- black, silver, green....love. lasts really well, vibrant colours.

And that's it! Though I have been thinking that I am missing a dark, cool tone smokey eye. Am thinking about a Tom Ford, but that is next level $$$

Can someone explain the benefits /drawbacks of matts vs shimmers please?

I'm 46 so should I use a matt eyeshadow?

Shimmers can accentuate lines, though I don't think anyone should stop doing anything they don't want to! I think shimmer looks great on lots of people, but by blending with a matt in the crease and keeping shimmer only to the mobile lid you can avoid some of the pitfalls

yes morris, I'm getting to a certain level of crows feet and also need to switch to matte. I had some nice eyeshadow from chantecaille that DD has made a complete mess of...

I don't particularly think it matters whether you use matte or shimmer. I don't like mattes very much, as I find them a bit flat and harder to blend. I do use a matte black shadow to set eyeliner though.

Whatever type of eyeshadows you choose, the most important thing is an eye primer. To me, the best one is Urban Decay Primer Potion in Age Defy or Eden. I'm too cheap to buy it though, so I just use samples. Apparently the Essence brand is just as good, so I'm going to try that next.

I've got old wrinkly eyelids, and it's amazing how much difference a primer makes. My eyeshadow literally stays on all day instead of disappearing into the creases.

Have urban decay 3 but it's nothing special in my opinion. As pp said, a lot of the colours are too similar. Will be interesting to know people's suggestions

MAC custom palette x 4: i chose patina, sumptuous olive, coquette and satin taupe (or something).
it sounds like yu had bad luck in MAC before. she sounds mean!
i think warm reds and bronzes/pinky hued colours generally look really ok and make me look high-coloured. i dont understand brick colours which seem so popular at themoment.

Naked 3 is nice but a bit samey. Very little differentiation in the colours and the dark ones don't blend well. I got Naked Smokey as a gift and thought I would hardly use it but it's actually very versatile. Yes a few of the colours are very dark but good for lining and there's actually a good mix of light and matte ones too. It come with a really good brush too - best brush of all the naked palettes with a fluffy end and a compact smudged end for lining. It's pretty cool toned as well which suits me best.

I used to use palette type eyeshadows but then decided to switch to just applying shadow to my socket crease as well as over my kohl eyeliner, to set it. It was a bit of a revolution for me. Doesn't crease badly or anything. I use this:

Hourglass palettes are amazing, really pigmented and last for ages. I have the Modernist and Infinity palettes and they are beautiful. There's not a duff colour in there.
Tarte palettes are also brilliant - I have the matte 'Tartette' one which has 12 lovely shades.

I don't really do shiny - I'm 47 and although I'm not terrifically wrinkled yet it highlights all the less than firm skin.

What I do like is sheeny washes of colour in cream format like Chanel's little pots Terre Ombre and Memory. Charlotte Tilbury's "Bette" and "Jean" are also very good. I find with shiny I have to spend £££ to get 'gleam' rather than 'glitterball'

I've dumped all mine except my Naked palette which is getting on a bit now.

I think my next purchase may have to be a Violet Voss one though, they're on cultbeauty and look gorgeous. Apparently there's one that's similar to Modern Renaissance but more wearable.

Though actually now I think about it, the Zoeva pallettes get great reviews and are a third of the price so realistically that'll probe my next brand!
