Looking for a warm coat for student DD

Hi there. I'm looking for some style advice please! My DD is at university in the Netherlands. She cycles everywhere. So far she has just been wearing layers with a good waterproof jacket and that's been ok but the weather is getting very cold. Particularly late at night when she's coming back from friends houses.

She thinks most of the coats and jackets I suggest are frumpy 🙄I was wondering would anyone have any suggestions for a warm waterproof coat that's good for cycling and slightly fashionable.

Does such a thing even exist?

Why doesn't she buy something designed for the weather there? I presume as she's in university she's over 18and is in fact an adult?

It's usually much better to buy where you need something, as they stock the things that are more suitable.

She's the best person to chose something for herself as she sees what others are wearing and can figure out where they got them.

Seriously, she's a grown up, and has told you she thinks your suggestions are frumpy- cut the strings, stand back and let her sort herself out. She's left home.

Well, what does she like? What is her style? Stripy linings and bright colours like Seasalt? Padded or quilted with a furry hood? Warm and waterproof coat internet searches normally throw up sensible Regatta things but there are some perfectly non-offensive things in those brands too:

What's your budget? Superdry coats are brilliant for both warmth and keeping dry, but very obvious branding, so only buy if you know she wouldn't mind that.

I think this Joules parka is pretty perfect www.joules.com/Women/Jackets-Coats/Brodie/Waterproof-Jacket/Heritage-Green?id=X_BRODIE|HERTGRN

A nice outdoor coat from a proper outdoor brand should do. I have a lovely jack wolfskin coat. Nice and warm and very flattering.

Thank you for your replies. I'll get her to have a look. I was just wondering what brands were out there.

GinnyWreckin I was asking as much for her as for myself. She wouldn't have a clue where to look. She'll be grateful to have a few ideas. Believe me the strings are well cut!!

i would think it lovely if my dm offered to buy me a nice winter coat or anything else i desperately need (carpet / bed) so i think.your dd is very luck flip and it's great you take an interest.

ilovecherries · 19/09/2017 10:25

My mum at 85 will still occasionally buy me nice things she knows I want or need. I think it's nice and thoughtful, not a sign that the strings aren't cut, and now and again I do the same for my adult kids. Although these days it's more often help with car insurance rather than coats they want.

flipflop67 · 19/09/2017 21:57

Thank you! She loves the superdry one.

flipflop67 · 20/09/2017 08:09

Yes, that’s the one. I’d like it myself! Thanks for your help. It’s a good price too. A good reduction.

Just a thought, if she cycles everywhere she might want one with a detachable hood?

gingerbreadmam · 20/09/2017 09:08

if you havent ordered already and dont have a very account it could be worth ordering off there as they always have new customer deals with 20 or 30% off or i thinj i saw a £30 off code the other day. free delivery to local click and collect shops too.

Crumbs1 · 20/09/2017 09:12

We bought the two student children Canada Goose coats last year. Warm, waterproof and quite 'acceptable' brand.

Not according to PETA, because they use coyote fur. I don't doubt the company would claim to be ethical (I wouldn't necessarily believe either side 100%) but it might not be 'acceptable' to some fellow students.

Crumbs1 · 20/09/2017 09:52

Don't think, they've experienced any issues but take your point that some might prefer not.
