Is this dress nice?!?

I've been looking for something to wear for a graduation, and I think I like this dress from M&S.

But maybe I only like it because it was the only v/low neck, knee covering, long sleeved dress that I could find and in actual fact I will look at the pictures and think I was wearing my Nan's old curtains. What do you think? Am I imagining its niceness, or not? If it makes a difference I am in my 40s, top heavy size 18, and slip very easily into frumpiness - hence my fear of making a mistake!

I think it's like curtains, sorry!

MyBrilliantDisguise · 13/09/2017 22:04

What about this? It's long sleeved, long, low neck and much more flattering.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 13/09/2017 22:05

Or this? Comes in blue, too.

SirNiallDementia · 13/09/2017 22:06

Sorry, don't like it! The material looks odd- there seems to be a very black section over the tummy.

Plus it's 100% polyester, grim!

HTKB · 13/09/2017 22:06

Eek! Have you looked the Hush Ren midi?

RickOShay · 13/09/2017 22:09

I much prefer the bravissimo one, that brilliant linked to.

BillywigSting · 13/09/2017 22:09

I think the two dresses posted by pp are both nicer than the m&s one sorry op. The second one maybe if you aren't comfortable with a figure hugging dress.

(am eyeing that one up myself now though it's lovely!)

Loyly · 13/09/2017 22:11

Oh no, that's an awful dress. The ones linked by MyBrilliantDisguise are good.

MsMarple · 13/09/2017 22:12

Thanks - you are all wise, I will stay away from the curtains!

Unfortunately my I-can't-beleive-she's-not-pregnant tummy won't look good in the Bravissimo ones. I'd never even heard of Hush though, so will check them out.

Yikes! That's seriously frumpy,, it's not even looking that good on the 20 something size 8 model! So, it's not going to do much for you (said from a 47 year old size 16). Not wishing to be offensive but there's so much nicer/more appropriate/flattering you can wear

MsMarple · 13/09/2017 22:15

Hmmm, Bravissimo have that style in tops though - maybe one of them with a less clingy skirt.

Alice & You at different stockists, do dresses with sleeves and V necks. Try ASOS, Simply Be, Debenhams, DPs and a few more that Google will link to.

polyhymnia · 13/09/2017 22:29

Or have a look at some of Boden's dresses perhaps.

Kochicoo · 13/09/2017 22:32

I actually think there's something about the M&S one i like OP. It caught my eye scrolling through the website tonight. I did love my Gran's curtains though Grin

CountFosco · 13/09/2017 22:33

I'd look in COS, Baukjen or Finery for a dress for a graduation. Much classier.

Dowser · 14/09/2017 11:37

I'm gradually getting rid of my old curtains lol
Please don't buy more.

CountFosco · 15/09/2017 22:32

OP we should obviously take all our rude comments back, Bum40 likes your dress. Obviously you are ahead of the fashion curve and we plebs should shut up!

applesareredandgreen · 15/09/2017 22:41

Sorry but I don't like it - I'm not exactly fashion forward but it looks really frumpy. I know patters and frills are in fashion at the moment but I would look for something a bit more plain, classic - particularly if it's for an occasion where you are likely to Look back at photographs in years to come - I think this is definitely a 'what on earth was I thinking' dress.

nickdrakeslovechild · 15/09/2017 22:43

I love it! hate the bravissimo dresses. I love prints. Who wants to blend in with the crowd.

Shockers · 15/09/2017 22:44

I really like the M&S one; it has a 70s vibe!

Ohyesiam · 15/09/2017 22:56

I have a tummy that sounds like yours op, and have found some good stuff in Phase 8 over the years.

verite · 16/09/2017 11:05

Sorry but yuk!
