Petite ladies - what have you bought lately?

I am so fed up of going shopping and seeing a mass of clothes made for giants. None of the trends seem to flatter petite frames (I'm 5'2). Other than the current state of my post baby hair it's the one thing that really really gets me down.

I do have a good seamstress but I've lost the ability to even choose stuff anymore. What are you all wearing and buying that flatters and you feel good in? Any go to shops?

I'm not particularly stylish, but I am short. (5'0)

I've recently purchased some high waisted jeans from Dorothy Perkins petite, although I get most of my jeans and trousers from the divisive Boden (just avoid the patterns that another MNer described wonderfully as "makes you look like Maria Von Trapp's been at the curtains again").

I'm currently lusting after an Oasis cord skirt in a burgandy/dark red - their short casual skirts normally hit just above my knee, although others complain about them being too short, that's perfect for me. I have a couple of skirts from last year from them.

I also like New Look clothes, similar issue for many, their skirts/dresses are a bit too short, but on someone our stature, they look perfect.

Uniqlo 3/4 length sleeves tops are pretty good.

upsidedown2017 · 10/09/2017 13:13

What tops will you be wearing with the skirts? And what coat over? I'm trying to put together outfits but failing miserably! I do love skirts/tights/boots and find that flattering but struggle with the top half :(

I bought a couple of Boden ruched jersey dresses. Wore them through the summer with bare legs and trainers and plan to wear through Autumn with opaques, boots and a biker jacket.

I bought a Hush ruched skirt, to also be worn with opaques and boots, plus a slouchy jumper for casual.

I bought a couple of pairs of cotton culotte things - have worn throughout the summer with a vest and trainers but will also wear to work with a jacket, and for Autumn casual with a denim or biker jacket, and trainers, at least until it's too cold for bare legs!

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/09/2017 13:15

I'm 5 foot and have just this week bought a red leather jacket (got the idea from here!), and a snakeskin chiffony shirt dress.
Both from ASOS.
Yesterday I wore black superskinnies from New look, black short sleeved shirt from Amazon, black leather jacket, ASOS, and Ash virgin Wedges.
Tomorrow I'm going swimming so just chuck on clothes, Asda blue skinnies, superdry tshirt, Hollister hoody and pink/orange gazelles.

upsidedown2017 · 10/09/2017 13:23

This is so hopeful ladies, thank you!

Love the idea of the hush ruched skirt (been meaning to buy one for years) - what sweater would you wear with this! And what type of coat?

OP posts:
InvisibleKittenAttack · 10/09/2017 13:25

I go for long sleeved t-shirts or thin jumpers with autumn/winter skirts, thick tights and ankle or knee high boots.

Coats wise, I'm between a leather jacket (that's about a billion years old), a denim jacket or my Boden rainy day Mum-coat when it's pissing it down. In a couple of weeks when it gets cold enough, the wool coats will come out. Both knee length on me, aim for something that's got plain sleeves you can alter.

I'd really like a good trench, but I've yet to find one in a petite range that doesn't look frumpy, or in a 'real sized' range that could be easily be altered.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/09/2017 13:29

I hope to wear the Hush skirt with this although I haven't bought it yet. Plan to size up, so it's nice and slouchy. Black leather biker on top.

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/09/2017 13:44

I have a slouchy jumper like that in black, from the charity shop Hugo BossGrin

InvisibleKittenAttack · 10/09/2017 13:50

Remus - where are your culottes from? I like the culottes and knee high boots look, but worry it'll make my tiny legs look even more non-existent!

upsidedown2017 · 10/09/2017 13:53

Thanks Remus, got some great ideas from you ;)

Invisible kitten - where are your wool coats from? Again struggle to find any that aren't oversized and preferably need some kind of nipped in or tailored waist

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/09/2017 14:04

I don't think I'll wear my culottes with knee high boots, but only because I got rid of my 70s-esque heeled knee highs, and now only have flat knee boots. I might try them with nude or black fishnets underneath and ankle boots though.

Mine are these in black - Per Una warning! They are v plain and inoffensive (I think/hope). They seem to crease easily though.

InvisibleKittenAttack · 10/09/2017 14:12

Yep, also need nipped in waists on coats or I look like I'm a kid wearing my mum's coat. One is from Next, other from Jaeger - but bought in TK Maxx.

I've learned to avoid anything with words like "cocoon" in the description. Fitted styles are more flattering.

CountFosco · 10/09/2017 14:23

I buy a lot from the dreaded Boden, I have their cropped cashmere cardigan in several colours. Their petite dresses are good as well, if not always the most exciting stylistically. Like others I have a ruched skirt, although mine was from Kettlewell colours, they do a short one in a bigger variety of colours than Hush do.

My recent purchases include some trousers for work from M&S, and another pair from GAP, both will be worn with loafers or brogues. My last pair of jeans were from ASOS petite. I also got this dress from COS which I'll wear with a contrasting belt and is just above my knee (I'm 5'2").

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/09/2017 14:35

I have a Merrel Haven coat for winter, bought about 5 years ago but still going strong and I love it.

InvisibleKittenAttack · 10/09/2017 14:41

Boden petite is very good, and often in the sale.

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/09/2017 15:20

I've just gone a bit mad and ordered a men's slouchy jumper. I'll see if I can make it work with turned up cuffs, a white shirt under and maybe a thin belt with black/blue/grey skinnies.
I fell in love with the colour and ASOS so free delivery, free returns.
If it works I'll definitely be getting the prime knit blue Adidas superstars, and I have a lovely soft blue leather liebeskind bag, or my tiny grey Yoshi.

myrtleberry · 10/09/2017 17:36

I buy 3/4 sleeve plain tops from Fat Face

KBTR · 10/09/2017 17:40

I buy quite a lot from new look, sometimes I even buy the tall options as they come down to my knees which I prefer, especially in the skater dresses.

I think they styles at the moment aren't very flattering for shorter women.

PaperdollCartoon · 10/09/2017 17:44

Several Boden dresses, some smarter work ones and more casual ones. I think their petite stuff is cut really well for curves.

lindyloo57 · 10/09/2017 17:51

Brillo Hair, the snakeskin dress sounds nice, is there a link to it?

upsidedown2017 · 10/09/2017 19:54

Right, off to look at Boden petite, it's been a while.

Petite ladies - what have you bought lately?
IHaveBrilloHair · 11/09/2017 14:22

The jumper I mentioned above has arrived, absolutely lovely, gorgeous colour and just the right amount of slouchy, just needs a small wrist turn up.
I'm out for lunch this week and will wear it with black skinnies and my Ash Virgin Wedges.
