Where/how can you get product samples?

I had a thread about cleanser for acne prone skin and had lots of great suggestions. I'd like to try a few things but sample sizes first so I'm not wasting product or money.

Which shops/brands/websites do samples? Or like 1/4 or 1/2 sizes? Skincare or makeup.

Most make-up/beauty counters will give you a couple of samples if you ask for advice (and samples - tell them that you'd like to try it out for a week or so before you commit). Otherwise, eBay is good for getting samples, but you have to pay for them.

Sorry - I meant to mention specific brands. Both Estée Lauder and Clinique are pretty good at giving samples in my experience.
