What's your best ever charity shop clothing buy?

I noticed on my "What are you wearing etc?" thread that quite a few people were wearing things from charity shops (as do I). Someone mentioned that they never find anything in charity shops and I know a few people who say this. Me, I can't walk past a charity shop without popping in "to check"...so I just wondered, what's your best ever charity shop buy?

Last spring I bought a lovely red wool Coast coat for £20, have been waiting till it gets cold enough to wear it. I love charity shops!

JaceLancs · 08/09/2017 22:47

Vivienne Westwood blouse for £1.99 which I got about £50 for on eBay
Jaeger jumper for myself - pure cashmere sweater £2 each
Peter kaiser shoes £3.00 so comfy
There are far too many to mention - I visit up to 20 charity shops some weeks - partly to supplement my income but also as I love clothes and am shrinking on SW so need to keep buying smaller things

JWrecks · 08/09/2017 23:36

Also it's not a charity shop, but I got a £500+ Moschino dress off Poshmark for £55. Who knows when I'll ever wear something so posh, but I couldn't pass up the bargain and I do love having it to look at!

These stories of charity shop finds are brilliant! I love the fact that some can even remember buys from many years ago and the one about the wedding dress is fab. Ironically, having posted this thread I went to have a look in a few shops near me yesterday but came away empty handed. Got a few bits and bobs to donate though so will have another look when I do that. Bit of a funny story - I donated a beige faux leather biker jacket, barely worn from Dotty Perkins as it was too big after weight loss and never really looked right on me anyway. Last time I was in that shop I picked it up thinking "ooh £4.50, that's a nice change from black, I could get that altered..." Then realised it was the one I'd donated, remembered the reasons why and put it back! Blush

I have a few charity shop things, but my favourite is a black DNKY cardigan which is silk and cashmere - it is so soft. It needs to be dry cleaned though, so has a maintenance cost!

palmfronds · 09/09/2017 07:58

An Amanda Wakeley wedding dress, brand new, still with tags, for £13. They retail for thousands. I still haven't got married but it's there waiting!

Also found an Herve Leger bandage dress, Tory Burch snakeskin flats and two Tod's handbags, all for under a tenner. One of the handbags had a white gold pendant in one of the pockets so that was a double win!

palmfronds · 09/09/2017 08:00

Sorry that last bit should say under a tenner each- that really would have been a bargain!

For those of you who don't live near good charity shops or can't get there/spend the time looking

You can search by brand, size, colour, department. Most shops get volunteer teens to list their better stuff.

Cherry Red velvet White Stuff coat - £10, on the morning of the day I was stressing about what to wear to a meal out.

Many, many years ago (1989) - a Buffalo windshirt, £3. Outdoorsy people will know what I mean. At the time these cost about £40, far more now. I've probably worn it at least weekly for 28 years.

Bluesheep8 · 09/09/2017 08:10

Ah Palmfronds-I love the idea of the bargainous wedding dress waiting for the day, that's brilliant Smile

Almost all my clothes are from charity shops, but my best guy is probably by black fit and flare mac. It's got no label so no idea where it's originally from but it's gorgeous, makes me feel well presented, I've been wearing it for 5 years, I dyed it when it got faded and now it's like new again!

FreeButtonBee · 09/09/2017 08:12

A celine vintage cross body handbag for £12. Saw a similar vintage one in liberty for £3k!!!!! I love it so much

OhDearToby · 09/09/2017 08:19

The charity shops near to me are very wise to the value of things so I'll never get a bargain. Anthing designer or fancy high street is expensive. I even once saw a primark t shirt for £10 and the other day a pair of well worn converse for £30 Shock

My best buy ever was a jumper. Don't recognise the brand but it's lovely and easy to wear.

Bluesheep8 · 09/09/2017 08:34

Freebuttonbee-that bag has got to be the best bargain EVER...do not let it out of your sight! Smile

A YSL cape thing I got in a charity shop in Brighton 5 years ago for a tenner.I wore it as my coat to a winter wedding and got lots of compliments....and I once wore it to go to London for the day and a girl ran across Oxford st to ask me where it was from...I feel like a celeb in it but it has to be kept for special occasions as I live in quite a small town and I'm not sure it's ready for me in my cape!

ChocoholicsAnonymous · 09/09/2017 09:06

A pair of very new looking mandco high heels for £1.75

3DGlasses · 09/09/2017 09:14

Nothing designer, but I had a stroke of luck of sorts.

I wanted a fitted v-neck navy sweater and found a Boden cashmere one in my local charity shop for £8. They retail at £100, so was chuffed to bits.

I pop in to the two decent shops on my high street once a week, and maybe 1 out of 3 trips I'll find something that makes me very happy Grin.

MorrisZapp · 09/09/2017 09:23

Our local scout troop do an annual jumble sale that draws crowds from miles around. It's a bit of an ordeal but if you can face the scrum the bargains are insane.

I got a bag of stuff last time, a lovely thick fat Face t-shirt for DS, jigsaw cigarette pants for me, some books, some toys, some school uniform bits and a brilliant football top. Think the whole lot was a fiver.

GinIsIn · 09/09/2017 09:29

Brand new whistles wool coat, tags still on - £20

Mrscog · 09/09/2017 10:22

A pair of black Gabor court shoes - no tags but looked completely unworn. Fit perfectly - £6.50!!

Gingernaut · 09/09/2017 14:23

It isn't about the designer stuff (although that's a big plus), it's the finding stuff you need when you need it.

I needed a letter rack big enough to take popper wallets so I could organise my stuff better and found one.

White, metal, heavy base so it won't fall over from IKEA in a hospice shop for £1.99.

Just what I needed. Grin

BikeRunSki · 09/09/2017 14:35

When DD was 11 months old our steriliser packed up. Money wSvety tight as DH had been made redundant whe she was 4 weeks old.

Walked into the charity shop and found the same make a sniffle steriliser for £2.

Juststopit · 09/09/2017 14:36

I've just picked up a Mudd and Water cotton dress. Brand new it would be £60 , it was £6.50. Looks fabulous on if I may say so lol.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 09/09/2017 18:03

Brand new Stella McCartney flats - $12
Brand new Lanvin flats - $15

Also once snagged a Pringle cashmere scarf for a fiver once.

YessicaHaircut · 09/09/2017 18:18
