What's your best ever charity shop clothing buy?

I noticed on my "What are you wearing etc?" thread that quite a few people were wearing things from charity shops (as do I). Someone mentioned that they never find anything in charity shops and I know a few people who say this. Me, I can't walk past a charity shop without popping in "to check"...so I just wondered, what's your best ever charity shop buy?

20 years ago I bought a red velvet 1950's coat for about 10 pounds. I paid 40 to have it re-lined- it still makes me feel like a million dollars.

100% wool brand new with tags Hobbs long coat for a fiver
2 silk DKNY square scarfs for a couple of pounds each
Pure DKny dress for a fiver
Paul Smith dress a fiver
M&S wool and cashmere long grey coat for seven pounds, it was brand new with tags, pockets still stitched up and is still going strong

Boredomismyenemy · 08/09/2017 14:00

100% Cashmere jumper for £4. It looked brand new!

megletthesecond · 08/09/2017 14:06

This is for my ds.
A Messi Barcelona football top.
Blue zip up Adidas top. (Like the red one stormzy wears).

MumBod · 08/09/2017 14:07

I'm very jealous. The ones round here are total crap.

To the extent that I rarely even see decent stuff I've donated on the shelves. Do they send stuff elsewhere?

DownHereInTheHorridHouse · 08/09/2017 18:01

I know the feeling MumBod - I have a bagful in my car that I want to get rid of, but can't bring myself to as the shops in my local town all do 'fill a bag for a fiver' type approaches. I've been Kondo-ing so I'm trying to take the sunk cost theory on board but there's a wool FCUK coat I bought in America that is brand new and cost me $250, boxed new Coast shoes that were £95, Boden dresses that have never been worn, absolutely lovely stuff that will get sold for pennies!

(And I read an ebay thread on here the other night that made me never want to even think of selling anything there . . .)

February 1994, Save the Children Charity shop (I could give you the exact address even now), Levi 501 jeans, 50p.

I wore them until they died and then cut them off into shorts and wore them some more.

Hmm what size are you horridhouse? I'd love to help with your problem Grin

I got an amazing 80s leather jacket for £20, brand new Reiss trousers for a fiver. Beautiful whistles silk dress for £15.

Charity shops near me tend to know the value of things and be a bit pricy though.

On the non clothes side a great 1950s Bakelite phone for £10

Babyblues14 · 08/09/2017 18:42

Karen Millen top for 2 quid. Charity shop in my area sells everything for 2 quid regardless of name brand.
And a Hugo boss suit in great condition for a tenner. (Different shop)

ApuskiDoo · 08/09/2017 18:45

Once when I was v young I saw a red dior dress and jacket. I thought it too expensive at £15 . I regret it so often now 20 years later.

Freshlysqueezed · 08/09/2017 18:57

They do move stock around to suit the demographics of each area Mumbod.

Chocolatteandbiscuits · 08/09/2017 19:17

Was inspired by this thread today and found a black and white Laura Ashley dress. It's in such good condition and really pretty!

Gingernaut · 08/09/2017 19:19

I've scored a black, silk, Ted Baker blouse for £3.95.

Missing one button, but aside from that, it's cool.

I'll take two off the cuffs, keep one spare and get two funky buttons to jazz up the cuffs.

SloanePeterson · 08/09/2017 19:22

Joseph lamb skin coat in perfect nick for £35. Not my thing at all, but I sold it on eBay for more than £300 and it basically paid for our holiday that year. Absolutely great bargains to be had near me

CoolCarrie · 08/09/2017 19:45

Joseph black velvet type material trousers for £5.00 worn them to bits!
AlexanderMcQueen pin stripe trouser suit with a fab purple lining £25
Daks jacket and 4 shirts for dh £45.

DramaticIroning · 08/09/2017 19:53

My wedding dress-a beautiful handmade vintage cream silk one for £40. I just popped in at the end of a very long shopping day where I had been trying on lots of very expensive, but not quite right dresses, and this one happened to be in the shop, tucked away at the side! Definitely glad I went in for a look around!!

Theundomesticatedmum · 08/09/2017 19:53

J Crew jeans for £5 - cigarette leg. Hobbs suit for £20 - both loved and worn a lot

Earthacat · 08/09/2017 19:54

Just yesterday, a pair of silk Anthropologie palazzo pants, unworn with the label still in (£129, I paid £4.50).

tigercub50 · 08/09/2017 19:58

I can feel a trawl coming on!

JWrecks · 08/09/2017 19:59

Oh, a few years ago I found an absolutely GORGEOUS camel coloured cashmere trench coat, only one size too big, with a small tear where one of the belt loops connects, vintage and proper designer brand, for about £8.

And you know what? I've just gone through my entire closet (moving, ugh) and only realised in this thread that I did not see it. Now I cannot for the life of me think where it bloody is!! Did I take it to a cleaner and forget to pick it up? Where has it gone to!?

littlebillie · 08/09/2017 20:03

I now want to visit charity shops 😁

isaulte · 08/09/2017 20:06

I often wonder who bought the Donna Karan dress that I gave to charity BY ACCIDENT. I hope they loved it as much as I did Grin

I once bought a rain Mac for £2, think Dunn & Co old man flasher Mac, I loved it and thought it made me look a fashionista. BF at the time said it made me look like a tramp. I left it on a train.
