Mini skirts at 45, yes or no?

MiniTheMinx · 05/09/2017 20:57

Now 44 and standing here in a mini kilt, thick tights, DMs, a short black cashmere sweater, and velvet collar. When I'm unsure I usually ask my DS 16. He said " you dressed like that as a teenager but it's cool"

But is it? Is it still ok to wear mini skirts past 40? I would really appreciate unbiased opinions.

God yes. Absolutely.

If I had the legs for it, I would.

CharlieBoo · 05/09/2017 21:00

Hell yes

GiveMeTheTeaAndNobodyGetsHurt · 05/09/2017 21:01

Fuck yes.

Justmuddlingalong · 05/09/2017 21:01

Yes. You can wear anything you want at any age. And a ‘cool' from your 16 y o DS is an added bonus.

Ohyesiam · 05/09/2017 21:02

Yes, yes and thrice yes.

Judydreamsofhorses · 05/09/2017 21:03

Yes. I am also 44 and in autumn/winter wear a lot of short-ish skirts with 100 denier opaques. In summer I favour midi length and wouldn't go bare legged in something short, but fair play to those who do.

DILF1981 · 05/09/2017 21:04

Are you 18 stone or over 40? Stop acting like a teen. Don't dress like your daughter

moomoogalicious · 05/09/2017 21:05

I'm 47 and still wear mini skirts with thick tights.

not with bare legs though.

allibebop · 05/09/2017 21:07

Yes - I'm 47 and wear above knee skirts in autumn/winter with 100 denier tights and boots - sometimes long boots sometimes ankle. I've a 19 year old who'd tell me if I was mutton....

ChinkChink · 05/09/2017 21:08

I'm a lot older than that and wear short skirts. It's how you wear them not whether you should wear them.

mowgeli · 05/09/2017 21:10

Depends on how you look let's see a photo!

MiniTheMinx · 05/09/2017 21:10

Aw thank you. I read the disappearing at a certain age thread. It made me think. I have never noticed people looking at me, and never felt conspicuous or felt hassled by men. I never noticed. But at the weekend DP said something about his friends commenting. All compliments but it made me think. I then felt a bit self conscious and noticed several people, and two passing men really staring. I'm not usually aware. So, then I start to think do I look ridiculous or not?

I'm short and tiny, so I've always thought that I'm not noticeable, and because I'm slim I could pull it off.

But a combination of the comments and reading the thread have made me question myself.

I agree, I would never go out with bare legs, the exception being mid length floaty dresses or ankle length skirts.

Gawd, yes.

If I had the legs, I would, but I've never had the legs SadEnvy

If you don't trust your own judgement, you surely can your teenager's - they'd soon tell you, wouldn't they? Grin

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 05/09/2017 21:19

If it's good enough for the wife of the French president then why not.

NYConcreteJungle · 05/09/2017 21:20

Wear what you like.

moomoogalicious · 05/09/2017 21:22

Wear what you like

this

zippyswife · 05/09/2017 21:28

I'm 41. I wore short shorts all summer. Mainly with simple oversize tees. Genuinely never occurred to me that I'm too old. Am I?! Please don't tell me I have to stop!! I'm very natural/plain looking (freckly and ginger) and because of this I assume no one looks at me so I can go short?

In answer to your question. 45 is still fine for shorts/mini skirts... I hope?!

MiniTheMinx · 05/09/2017 21:28

How old is the French President's wife? I'll have to Google, I know she's older than him. But I seem to think she is though quite stunning isn't she?

I don't know how to upload photo on the app. Happy to do so when I get to my desk tomorrow.

Can I trust my son, he's very honest and lovely but he isn't bothered by fashion. I did ask him to always say if he felt embarrassed!

Wear what you love. Go bare legged if you are comfortable.

The thing I think is actually more important is that you know how to bend down in the skirt so you don't have your bum hanging out.

I'm a skinny mini too and get away with wearing short skirts or dresses (but not bodycon, only if that's a long something) so you're correct it's easier to pull it off if you're not fat and have wobblegy legs.

I bet you look great, we want to see a photo of said outfit. Feel free to chop your head off if you want to be anonymous Wink

MiniTheMinx · 05/09/2017 21:33

Zippy, that's it for me too. I never felt conspicuous or noticeable. I'm not some Amazonian goddess that stands out. Apart from fairly good legs and a mass of hair ( bit messy but apparently nice) I'm in no way anything other than ordinary.

On one side, I think it's fine to wear short skirts at any age.

On the other side, it's not the length here it's the style. I'm 48 and yes when I was a late teens people wore mini kilts, doc martens and thick tights. So I think you're son has a point, it's a bit 80s and you wore it then, and its not hugely fashionable now, as such, I'd think maybe you were stuck in a style rut from your youth if you're still wearing that particular style.

So length fine, but if I'm honest, I'd look at you and think you wore it as a teen also.
