1940s themed Hen - help!

WhatTheChickens · 02/09/2017 19:43

I have a hen weekend in 3 weeks - one of the nights will be a fantastic event which is 1940s themed.

I'm struggling to find an outfit that is both true to the era and flattering.
Tea dresses do nothing for me - I'm 5'4 and an 8/10 and just look like my nan wearing one.

The bride is going super glam (Rita Hayworth esque) so obviously don't want anything that treads on her toes.

Is there anything I could wear half way between the tea dress and ultra glam?

I'm lost!

Thanks in advance Smile

How about Rosie the Riveter inspired? A glam boiler suit style jumpsuit and heels with red lipstick/ nails and a 40s style updo with a bright silk headscarf? Asos seems to have a few jumpsuits that are not too pricey. Add a vintage clasp handbag possibly from charity shop or eBay. I think this could look amazing.

Cherry Dollface on you tube does great vintage tutorials.

sadmonkey1 · 03/09/2017 13:37

Yes, her hair is incredible! Alternatively, I find 'old lady' hair salons are the best for retro styles.

Oh how fun!

Look at Lindy bop and also vivien of holloway.

You might find some lovely authentic vintage items on eBay too , you're a small size so you can wear actual vintage from that era.

I think vivien of H have some cool wide legged trousers too , heyday also stock them.

Have fun picking!

Just hoping it looks ok on when it arrives, as I've left it a bit late - hen is in 2 weeks!

I once went to a 40's themed party, however, as the invite was last minute I couldn't really dress accordingly. so instead I stuck 4 teabags into my earrings

I'll get my coat

Grin Nora

Peanutbuttercheese · 08/09/2017 09:47

I love that dress, I would have probably gone in full military uniform and persuaded two others to join in an Andrews sisters theme, but the Rosie the riveter is an inspired idea.

changingShorts · 08/09/2017 12:04

Ha, ha, WhatThe! I went to a 40s themed do last year in something almost exactly like that. Similar height/size to you and feel frumpy in tea-dresses.

I felt good, got compliments and I'm sure you will too.

Getting really excited now, next on the list - the perfect red lippy!

Nuttynoo · 08/09/2017 14:46

Mac's Ruby Woo is a gorgeous matt vintage red.

WhatTheChickens · 08/09/2017 14:53

Oo, thanks - that's one I was looking at, also Nars Audacious?

Nuttynoo · 08/09/2017 15:03

Audacious is good, but Ruby Woo is more versatile.

Viewofhedges · 08/09/2017 15:20

Superdrug Mua lippy is great and the pillar box red one costs one whole pound!

WhatTheChickens · 08/09/2017 16:21

Brilliant! Thanks Smile
