Do any of you wear a slip?

Just bought a gorgeous vintage slip for a steal on Etsy and imagining myself swanning around like Liz Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (ha!).

Then had an actual think about what I might do with it - think it will be useful under some of my scratchier wool dresses, will help one particular cashmere one not stick and could wear it around the flat. NOT planning to wear it as outerwear, even if that is fashionable.

Am seeking inspiration and also curious: do any of you wear slips?

Yep! I've got some skirts/dresses that are really see through if the light shines through them so I wear a slip under.

Gah81 · 27/08/2017 09:13

Ah - hadn't even thought of that, thanks squiz. A whole new world of gorgeous sheer 30s stuff has just been opened up to me 😊😊

I've not worn a slip (or a petticoat as my mum called them) since I was a child. I'd forgotten about them actually.
I wear them as nighties sometimes but they are designed as nightwear.

Mrsjones17 · 27/08/2017 09:52

Haha my mates are incredulous because I wear slips. Under my dresses and skirts. I have quite a collection of them. They think it's hilarious because they only associate slips with older people but I don't care I rather not see my underwear through my clothes!

curuncule · 27/08/2017 09:55

Always, they make everything look better!

BarchesterFlowers · 27/08/2017 10:02

I do, always! Makes your clothes hang better. I wear a lot of Hobbs wrap dresses and a slip means that I don't have to worry about the wind.

The best I have found came from Boundary Mills on the A1, I had gone in for a wee 😂 on a long drive and they had silky but stretchy ones, really good quality fabric - I bought two black, two white, two nude and literally wear them every day for work.

Silverthorn · 27/08/2017 10:02

I don't have any but some skirts tend to ride up when worn with tights so may consider investing for winter. Also under a knitted dress. So for autumn/ winter.

troodiedoo · 27/08/2017 10:05

They make any dress hang better. M and s nude ones are great.

SesameSparkle · 27/08/2017 10:08

Yes, occasionally - I have a nude one for wearing under unlined dresses if I feel they are too clingy or see through.

Heratnumber7 · 27/08/2017 10:11

They are also much warmer than adding a cardigan.

Outlookmainlyfair · 27/08/2017 10:13

Yes, bought a few cheapies. Either under dresses (dress hangs better and feels sooo glam) or as a nightie.
I am saving up for one of these: parasolrose They are GORGEOUS!

skyzumarubble · 27/08/2017 10:15

I do to stop static between tights and dress / skirt.

friendlyflicka · 27/08/2017 10:18

I do in Autumn under clingy dresses. And I have a couple of lace skirts and dresses that are too sheer without. They are a very under-rated item of clothing. Once you get into them you will never leave.

I am a big Cat on a Hot Tin Roof fan as well though

LoniceraJaponica · 27/08/2017 10:21

I have a maxi dress made from thin cotton, and when I wear it this happens, so I wear a half slip under it.

NC4now · 27/08/2017 10:25

I'm sold! I'm updating my work wardrobe for a new job I'll be starting in October. I'm adding a couple of slips to my shopping list.

Thanks so much, all. Some great ideas - and my curiosity is satisfied. I also feel even more excited about my purchase's arrival (it is coming from America so plenty of time for the anticipation to build up!).

Those parasol rose ones are gorgeous, Outlook.

And I can think of a few things I might own which are potentially sheer in the wrong light...

I just wear them under dresses and things on colder days.

explodingkittens · 27/08/2017 18:52

I have one that came with a dress from Boden years ago - the dress went to the charity shop ages ago but I kept the slip! I wear it under skirts/dresses with tights, mainly, to stop static cling. I also have a couple of clingier dresses that look much smoother and, well, classier! with a slip underneath. I agree that once you discover the power of a good slip, you never go back Wink

MrsGrindah · 27/08/2017 19:01

why havent I thought of this before?!! Constantly pulling down staticky dresses or conscious of flapping wrap arounds! When I was a kid Mum always made me wat a petticoat and now I've just twigged why!

MrsGrindah · 27/08/2017 19:02

Wear not wat!

Judydreamsofhorses · 27/08/2017 19:07

Almost always. I have a Calvin Klein one I bought in John Lewis years ago for short things, and an M&S one for midi length. They stop static/cling and just give a smoother "line".

arousingcheer · 27/08/2017 19:09

Yes, and I buy vintage ones as well because they're made better and the fabrics are usually nicer. I have a gorgeous navy viscose full slip which works under a lot of dresses. I also have some half-slips (incl a leopard print with handkerchief hem, so cute) to keep dresses/skirts from catching on tights/leggings in winter.
I have a more recent M&S nude one but it's so stretchy it has sagged at the sides and it's hard to tell if it's showing or not. Also nude is not quite right over black or navy leggings so am always on the lookout for half-slips in good strong colours.

OlennasWimple · 27/08/2017 19:13

Much to my mother's chargrin, I do not. I was forced to wear one to school every day and was teased mercilessly for it, so I can't really get over that association. Even though logically everything you are all saying about them improving the look of clothes

Helloyouitsme · 27/08/2017 19:15

Never ever but on threads on here over the years it seems lots of people do. Isn't there an m&s one that keeps you cool?
