Do any of you wear a slip?

Just bought a gorgeous vintage slip for a steal on Etsy and imagining myself swanning around like Liz Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (ha!).

Then had an actual think about what I might do with it - think it will be useful under some of my scratchier wool dresses, will help one particular cashmere one not stick and could wear it around the flat. NOT planning to wear it as outerwear, even if that is fashionable.

Am seeking inspiration and also curious: do any of you wear slips?

I have two half-slips, ie the skirt only. I wouldn't be without them. They make so many things hang better, including my two very favourite and crucial work dresses. I get teased mercilessly by anyone who finds out I wear one. I don't know why anyone doesn't!

Yes. Stops dresses clinging and gives smoother outline. I do use them as nightwear occasionally, if we're staying away.

bingohandjob · 27/08/2017 20:00

Yes, pretty much under any dress that isn't lined in something "slippy" (I'm looking at you, Boden, with some of your ill-advised cotton frocks lined with cotton that make them sit funny/ride up) - have several from M&S and they make good nighties, too. They make clothes hang better and great for under light coloured stuff.

I came on this thread to find out if people really do wear slips in 2017 but now I think I need one.

So they make you really hot? I work in a warm work place.

Tantpoke · 27/08/2017 20:09

a lot of my dresses have a lining and one kindly came with a separate slip which I use for most of my other dresses that aren't lined.

This made me decide to buy the M&S slip which keeps you cool, it basically doesn't stick to you on hot days so worth having tbh.

StatueInTheSky · 27/08/2017 20:16

i have some nice enough ones from Primark!....two reversible ones...v or scoop neck and a couple of slightly spanx-esque ones with nice wide straps.

What I really like is a bra slip, but I got fat and outgrew my last one, but so so flattering underneath any dress.

Dh gets a bit over excited if he catches me in a slip...all very "are you trying to seduce me Mrs Robinson?" :o

BretonCat · 27/08/2017 20:18

Love me a petticoat.

explodingkittens · 27/08/2017 20:19

Lol statue - I think they're rather sexy too! I don't know why they've got such a frumpy reputation...well I do, but it's undeserved imo!

Crumbs1 · 27/08/2017 20:19

M&S do a cooling slip that really doesn't make you too hot.
Yes, some of Boden jersey dresses could do with a lining.
Yes much, much more alluring than PJs.

Here's to us all swanning around our boudoirs, drinking whiskey and looking like this Grin

Can one even buy now??

silkpyjamasallday · 27/08/2017 20:53

I have so so many, but I wear them over polo neck jumpers or tshirts, they don't look much like underwear to me though, I don't have lace-y ones but they are all silk (one is velvet) some plain and some patterned I love them. I wear them on their own in the summer too, as well as under wrap skirts or dresses. Such versatile things slip dresses.

woodhill · 27/08/2017 20:53

Yes if dress or skirt not lined.

Moussemoose · 27/08/2017 20:54

Decent foundation wear is my big tip for looking good.

All those lumps and bumps and ridges smoothed away.

You need your tits high ( decent bra) and your hips smooth ( petticoat) our grandmother's knew a thing or two.

Gah81 · 27/08/2017 20:56

Lots of modern suggestions on here, lynmilne but also a wonderful range of vintage on Etsy.

I have the basic one from M&S and it gets worn very regularly for work.

Unlined dresses, thin dresses, static, low cut dresses, shirt dresses and wrap dresses - all become that bit easier to wear with a slip.

rightknockered · 27/08/2017 21:29

These sound like just what I need. Sorting out my knitted dresses today, and two that i actually like a lot were very itchy. Off to look around Marks

hamsterloverlover · 27/08/2017 21:31

this is a revelation, last time i wore a slip was at school in 1982! will purchase one forthwith

Passmethecrisps · 27/08/2017 21:32

And yes to Boden dresses lined with cotton - may as well not bother.

I also bought the asos jersey dress which was doing the rounds a year or two ago. It would have been unwearable for me without a slip underneath.

And a great cheap as chips shirt dress which would have been frankly indecent without it

storynanny · 27/08/2017 21:34

Yes to the m and s nude one, it's q unite expensive but makes dresses hang much better. Is reversible v/round neck and comes in a variety of lengths.

carrotcakecupcake · 27/08/2017 21:46

Slips are one of the best things my mother taught me about. As pp have said they make any dress and most skirts hang so much better. I like to wear thick granny tights under jersey shift dresses for most of the winter, which just wouldn't be possible without a slip!

Northernlass99 · 27/08/2017 22:00

I am so glad others still wear a slip. Have two full slips I wear with wrap dresses and all my work dresses. Def makes them sit better.

MinesaPinot · 27/08/2017 23:10

Yes, I do, and have several in varying lengths, full and half slips. It just makes dresses hang better and stops the dreaded tights/dress cling.

What I would really like is a proper bra slip. Anyone got any recommendations?

Deathraystare · 29/08/2017 09:42

Mainly half slips - on the odd occasion I wear a summer skirt (see throughish). I think I have a whole slip somewhere but it will be an M&S special so not an Elizabeth Taylor look alikey.

One thing I have noticed when wearing a dress that has a slip under it, the slip is very tight whereas the dress isn;t so you get that weird thing of being very contained but wearing a floaty dress!

Gah81 · 23/09/2017 19:53

Update on the slip: it arrived and it is perfect. Have worn it a number of times already, it does what it says on the tin and the embroidery at the top is so gorgeous that I have on occasion left an extra button unbuttoned to show it off.

Plus the fiancé finds it very appealing, which is a nice additional bonus!
