What beauty basics should I do?

I am 40 and currently feeling fat & bleugh. As well as losing a few pounds, a weekend away with some female friends has made me realise that my low maintenance regime is probably a bit too low maintenance (although it does have the advantage of not having to check in all of the pots of potions needed for a weekend). My regime currently consists of applying Boots serum every morning... and that's about it. I wash my face in the shower with water each morning & evening; I wear make up (foundation, eye shadow, mascara &, if I can find it, lipstick) about three times a week. I am never going to be glossy & stylish but I think I should be a bit more put together than I am now.
My skin is fine apart from a few spots in the run up to my period and a few clogged pores dotted around my face. I do seem to be sensitive to quite a few things. Nivea, Astral & Estée Lauder (EL being my previous attempt at getting my act together) lead to spots; Clinique lead to red, dry, flaky patches. I have tried to get samples from beauty counters as I am reluctant to
spend money on something which will irritate me but never manage to get anything.

The only fancy stuff I'll buy is a prescription retin A, and a good glycolic peel.
For a cleanser you can do smthg like cerave, that's fairly cheap, and works great.
A zinc sunscreen
And for moisturizers I just go to my natural grocer for unrefined Shea butter or coco butter..I also play around with different oils. Emu, coconut, and rosehip were what worked for me, but everyone's different.
Ime, there's not much need for any overpriced fragrance laden creams with mile long ingredient lists I can't even pronounce. They haven't worked any better for me.
I'm also low maitenence though
