Another: I want this coat I don't need this coat

I'm waiting for baby to wake up from his nap so I can head to the shops to buy this coat that I tried a couple of days ago.

It's wool and super discounted and I need a smart coat for when I go back to work - but I'm no going back to work until spring. I still have baby weight on so can't tell it 100% suits me and obviously being on maternity leave I need to watch my pennies. Also, it's not the thickest of materials so for really cold weather I'd have to invest in a compact down jacket to wear underneath.

Crucially I have promised myself that I wouldn't buy anything for a year (year is up next June), I have been so good so far but this would be breaking my own rules.

But I do need a new coat, this would be the first proper grown up one I own.

So what's the sensible thing to do dear MNeters?

I am not bug on sensible, but... Buying a new coat for autumn/winter is one of my greatest joys. Unlike summer clothes, you know you'll get your money's worth and be able to wear it for years (I have about 20 coats). Plus, even if you are wearing really scruffy clothes underneath, a good coat will make you feel fab.

tbh if you have to wear a down jacket underneath very often then it's not the right coat for winter. On the other hand, once spring hits, will you get much wear out of it if it is wool? (Actually, scrub that, I have been wearing a 100% wool tweed jacket most of the summer ... bl**dy Scottish summers!)

It looks very classic but does it have any fastenings other than the belt? Because that won't keep you warm in an icy wind ...

Depends on your lifestyle. I am out in all weathers so it wouldn't be the coat for me. But if you go from car or tube station to building then it looks lovely.

Is it Jaegar? I have a very similar Jaegar wool coat just in a lighter camel. I am naturally frail and trembly of bone, but found last Winter I was fine with the coat and a uniqlo heattech vest (obviously then with outfit).

I used to have a Mansfield navy one just like that lasted for years, such a classic shape that will not date.

But have to agree with the previous question of how its going to be worn, and hope it does have a wrap over fastening inside

I went and bought it and they had extra 25% off sale items so I have just got myself a bargain. It is Jaeger and seems to be sold out online.

I have a rain coat and a warm wool coat from Toast that goes well with trousers and casual days, I just needed something smart for when I'm going to conferences or just want to feel more put together.

It does have a button inside but as I feel the cold I think I'll definitely get a down jacket or gilet for when it's really bitter.
