Are skinny jeans and knee-high boots dated?

I've always been a fan of skinny jeans tucked into long boots, but are they a bit too early-noughties now? What else can I wear them with?

Saint Laurent, Jimmy Choo, Chloe, Valentino etc have all done knee high boots for this season. They are definitely coming back.

AnnabelleLecter · 16/08/2017 08:54

No, not dated. I like all kinds of boots.
I don't let the fashion know- alls dictate what I wear.

SenatorBunghole · 16/08/2017 08:54

A bit, but so what? If it suits you, and I think it's fair to say many of us don't rock skinnies as well as some people on S and B seem to think everyone does, wear it. It's nice and warm after all. I'd just say make sure the jeans are a good fit and the boots are good quality, as they'll be the focus of the outfit.

brightlightceiling · 16/08/2017 08:57

I feel that it looks dated and I'm no fashionable spring chicken!

AGrinWithoutACat · 16/08/2017 09:02

It's a practical look for a country that has more wet days than sunny!

But I have never been fashionable Grin

I live in skinny's and boots except on the rare hot days - just wish I could find affordable proper knee highs most boots in my cheap price range end just above the calf

Ethelswith · 16/08/2017 09:02

'I also don't like the skinny jean and ankle boot look, I think you really have to have very thin legs to pull it off"

If your legs are really thin, it doesn't work as ankle boots gape.

Actually, many boots gape, so it's a case of seeing which height tends to do it least. I have Ugg Lesleys (which may be the ones PandorasXbox was talking about) and I really hope they'll make them again this year.

Also those Spanish riding boots (that so many people were raving about on MN a few months ago) will be out admin in the autumn.

BackieJerkhart · 16/08/2017 09:07

Ankle boots look awful imo. I can't recall a single time I've seen them and thought I must have that look.

Knee high boots can look fantastic but can also look shite. It depends on quality and style of boot as well as what you're wearing them with.

mummmy2017 · 16/08/2017 09:08

If you don't care about fashion.
Look in the mirror and say "yes. I like this look on ME."
Then you can wear what ever you like.
High fashion costs to much, sometimes makes you look stupid, while wearing what you like means your comfortable in your own skin.
But please if your leggings show your knickers, please wear a longer top.

SenatorBunghole · 16/08/2017 09:09

I tend to prefer ankle boots with tights and dresses.

NancyJoan · 16/08/2017 09:10

Yes, very Kate Middleton.

alltouchedout · 16/08/2017 09:10

I saw someone wearing thigh high boots over mum jeans the other day. She looked uncomfortable and I wondered how on earth she'd crammed the boots over the decidedly not skinny jeans legs! In general though, if you like what you're wearing and feel good in it, have at it.

StatueInTheSky · 16/08/2017 09:14

I like boots and skinnies....I shall certainly be partaking in this look again this year! :o
I mix and match longer boots or ankle boots...still looking for the perfect pair of flat (maybe pixie) type boots mind you....are those chelsea boots still in? Were they DMs or did I imagine that?

ShovingLeopard · 16/08/2017 09:16

Long slouchy long boots are apparently in style this year. Have only seen them styled with dresses so far, but I can imagine they'd look good over skinnies. I'm planning to get a pair, and will definitely wear them with jeans when it's cold and wet. I love having warm legs. Cold, wet ones - not so much...

ShovingLeopard · 16/08/2017 09:16

Meant to say cone-heeled, not the redundant extra 'long'.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 16/08/2017 09:18

Knee high boots are definitely making a revival in the Aut 17 collections.

Dancergirl · 16/08/2017 09:30

backie so what do you wear with knee high boots?

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 16/08/2017 09:30

Thinking about it and I didn't wear skinny jeans and knee high boots last winter. I was carrying extra weight so I couldn't if the truth were told! I did wear them with dresses, skirts and jumper dresses though.

I prefer slightly rolled up skinnies with ankle boots or trainers at the moment tbh.

If you have the right style of boots and you like it, feel it looks good on you then I'd say go for it!

Kickhiminthenuts · 16/08/2017 09:35

As a short stumpy thing I'd look fucking shocking (that bad swearing would be needed) in rolled jeans and ankle boots!

I can't see it being a look that dates, as the heel & toe changes. I recently threw out my old boots and the heel and toe was very different.

TipTopTipTopClop · 16/08/2017 10:00

I bought some Jimmy Choo knee-high boots last year, what I liked about them was that they weren't intended to be tight, they have a natural gap around them, and they have a chunky gold zipper.

Conversely, I retired for the moment a pair of super-tight LK Bennet boots that are more traditional riding style a la Kate Middleton. These do feel kind of dated.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 16/08/2017 10:05

Skinny jeans and ankle boots = OK, like this (other jeans styles better, like this)
Knee boots and long floral dresses = OK, like this
Skinny jeans and over the knee boots = OK, like this (when I searched "skinny jeans knee high boots" on Pinterest, this is all that came up)
Riding boots and skinny jeans = OK, like this

Skinny jeans and knee high boots = dated (like this)

Just my opinion, of course!

Feawen · 16/08/2017 10:06

Actually, I don’t think they look dated, so much as coming around again. Three winters ago ankle boots were a new trend. For the last two winters they have been ubiquitous and knee-boots have looked dated. This winter a slouchy knee boot is the ankle boot of three years ago and by next year Chelsea boots will look dated.

That said, I think a beautiful pair of high quality boots are always stylish, even when they aren’t in fashion. If you own something lovely that makes you feel good when you put it on then that’s more important than being on trend, I think.

Judydreamsofhorses · 16/08/2017 10:24

My last pair of knee-highs gave up the ghost about five years ago and since then I've worn biker or Chelsea boots. I think knee-highs and skinny jeans is a "classic" look rather than "dated", but when I see someone wearing that on a dry day I automatically wonder if rain is forecast. (Which it usually is, so...!)

BackieJerkhart · 16/08/2017 10:37

backie so what do you wear with knee high boots?

Only dark denim skinny jeans or my plum skinny jeans which are actually starting to lose shape and colour so I need something to replace them! On top I wear stuff like in these photos except without the awful jewellery. And not that mustardy coat (photo in next post) or those black knee boots.

I've always considered flat plain riding style boots to be a classic! Think you've got to wear them with dark wash skinnys though - lighter coloured jeans do look very early 2000s. Same with the mid calf length biker boots.
Heeled boots are a bit more difficult to pull off. Saying that though, I bought a pair of black suede heeled boots last winter. I do find them difficult to style with jeans though, they look much better with thick black tights and dresses/skirts.
