What's the oldest thing in your wardrobe?

I've just found a skirt that is 18 years old! The skirt will probably never fit me again but it's a classic woollen mini and I can't bear to through it out.

I've got some going out shoes that are bound to be the same age too.

I have two pairs of M&S pjs that DH bought me when I was in hospital having DC1, said child turns turns 25 next month and I still wear the pjs occasionally as sadly I am a similar size now to the size I was the day after giving birth.
I also have a blue, cotton, chunky knit M&S sweater I bought before I got married, it is still my go-to gym sweater and it is my 30th wedding anniversary next month.
And a beautiful devore lace, fit and flare prom style black dress from Pronuptia that I bought just after my honeymoon.

semideponent · 14/08/2017 22:22

20 yrs old...LBD from a Gap sale rail. No price tag, so the cashier sold it to me for £5. I haven't worn it for years but somehow it survives the wardrobe purges.

Sunshineandgin · 14/08/2017 22:24

I have a black jersey zip up jacket with embroidered flowers and dragons on the back, I got it when I was a teenager in H&M on a rare shopping trip with my mum and sister.
It's now about about 15 years old, I hardly ever wear it but it still fits (just) and I can't bear to throw it out.

LapsedPacifist · 14/08/2017 22:29

I have a psychedelic hippy-style wrapover maxi skirt from 1972 and a black wool Empire-line pinafore dress with a Liberty print floral cotton trim from 1974. Both in heart-breakingly teeny sizes Hmm.

SunnyL · 14/08/2017 22:33

My great grannies fur coat. I rarely wear it because I'm worried someone will chuck a pot of red paint over me.

watfordmummy · 14/08/2017 22:36

I have a half zip sweatshirt from Think Pink and it must be 23 years old Blush

Time40 · 14/08/2017 22:36

A beautiful embroidered net 1920s scarf that was the first vintage thing I ever bought ... I've had it 41 years (I was very, very young when I started buying vintage!) But I've got loads of stuff that I've had for 30+ years - I see my wardrobe as an ongoing project, and a collection.

AnnieOH1 · 14/08/2017 22:38

I have a black berkertex dress with blue stargazer Lily's on it. It is that non-iron material that hangs heavy. Always pack it in carry on just in case I need to change on flights. The oldest I can have been is 8 when I was bought it (I know my granddad was alive as he and my nannan bought it). The thing is it still looks new and is just some weird miraculous thing!

Puppymouse · 14/08/2017 22:38

A Winnie the Pooh fleece hoody from Disneyland Paris. It was the last time we went on holiday me, my mum, my dad and my sister before they split and I left home.

Bought in 1998 so 19 years old. It's holding up extremely well, has fitted me or drowned me in a comforting way on cold days ever since.

ChainingDaisy · 14/08/2017 22:41

The top I'm wearing now was my mum's. It's black and white striped and very slouchy. I know it's older than me, but not by how much. At least 27 though.

arousingcheer · 14/08/2017 22:45

I have a 30s floral silk tea dress which really doesn't suit me and I should get rid but I've had it since I was 18 or 19 so no idea if I'll ever be able to rehome it. Also have a gorgeous hand-embroidered and beaded but sadly quite fragile 20s satin flapper dress which began to disintigrate on me the one and only time I ever wore it 30 years ago. I had to run in the loo and pin the back with a safety pin.

I have a favourite pair of black boots I bought about 12 years ago and must have worn at least 3 times a week in cooler weather the whole of that period. The soles have been redone multiple times and have never been the same. I look for replacements all the time but no luck yet.

I have a wrap skirt I made with my mum when I was about 8 (1975ish). It's navy with green and white rhinos and flowers on it. I don't wear it anymore [smile[ but quite like having it.

arousingcheer · 14/08/2017 22:46

Urgh, smileys fail. Angry

Time40 · 14/08/2017 22:51

... if 'the oldest thing in your wardrobe' doesn't just mean how long you have had it, but how old it actually is, I have a black satin beaded cape from c. 1870 ... it looks good with more modern stuff! The oldest thing I have of my mum's is her first pair of grown-up high heels, which she bought in 1947. I have lots of my mum's clothes from the 40s to the 80s, and I do wear them, as we turned out to be exactly the same height and size. I love wearing the things she made herself, as she is dead now, and it makes her feel a bit closer.

Oldraver · 14/08/2017 22:52

I Have my 'going away' dress from 1984, though it's an old styel I would never wear even if it did fit me.

I have a St Michael dress from about 1990, it's a polka dot 40's style and still looks good

neveradullmoment99 · 14/08/2017 22:53

Has to be a pair of boots. They are a pair i bought mid 1990's

Judydreamsofhorses · 14/08/2017 22:54

Other than vintage stuff, I have a French Connection dress I bought about 12 years ago. It's a-line with sleeves, paisley print, with a pussy-bow neck, and at the time was very expensive for me, about £70. For quite a few years it was a "going out" dress, but now I wear it to work at least once a week in autumn/winter. It's probably my most-complimented item of clothing, and I have often had total strangers ask me where it's from.

Nettletheelf · 14/08/2017 22:56

Black silk tie neck top from a French Connection sale 20 years ago. Still worn regularly, still looks fab. Back when French Connection wasn't a fiesta of polyester.

TheScottishPlay · 14/08/2017 23:00

Two cosy jumpers I bought in M&S for a weekend in Brussels in February 2002.
I still wear them to garden and diy in.
I also have my wedding dress from 2001. I have never had it on again.

JigglyTuff · 14/08/2017 23:01

I have an Edwardian silk embroidered top and a couple of jackets that are late 1920s. And some 1950s dresses.

Other than vintage stuff, I have one of my mum's pencil skirt from the early 80s. I have quite a few things that are 20-30 years old though - the only way I can tell their age is that I usually bought them for weddings!

AliciaMayEmory · 14/08/2017 23:06

I'm wearing a pair of lilac gingham pyjama bottoms that, now I come to think about it, I made in textiles class in the 5th year which would have been around 1992! In my defense I can never find pj's long enough as I'm tall and they are so soft and comfy after years of washing and wearing that I don't think I'll be throwing them out any time soon! They are still going strong, and probably cost a couple of pounds to make. The drawstring is a ribbon from a box of chocolates. Blush (May be it is time for a new pair...)

AliciaMayEmory · 14/08/2017 23:09

I'm very jealous if time40's cape from 1870.

AliciaMayEmory · 14/08/2017 23:09

*of, not if

iamapixiebutnotaniceone · 14/08/2017 23:11

I still have a couple of Topshop tops and a Miss Selfridge shirt from when I was around 15. All still fit me 15 years and 4 babies later and probably look better on now than they did then. I know I sound old saying it but these things were far better made than anything on the high street now.

Gingernaut · 14/08/2017 23:13

A coat probably made during the 60s.

AuldAlliance · 14/08/2017 23:13

That I bought for myself: a T-shirt with a funky (?) dinosaur on, that I still wear in bed. Purchased in 1991.

That was bought for me: I have my school tie, bought in about 1978 or 79, and a little kilt I can still squeeze into, probably from the same period.

I also have a fisherman's jumper my dad bought with his first pay packet (from a bonded warehouse in Leith, c. 1955). Amazing quality, still going strong.

And a cashmere cardigan that was my grandad's, probably from the 70's. The sleeves are v raggedy at the wrists, but I love it.

I also have a box of monogrammed hankies of my Granny's, from about 1930 or a bit before. And her little pearl handled penknife, which I carry in my handbag (and which has been through airport security on more than one occasion, to my later horror, but set no alarms ringing).
