How to keep bleach blonde white?

Hi, I have blonde highlights and they always go a bit yellow! I use the Bleach London silver shampoo and conditioner a couple of times a week but is there anything else out there that's better? At my salon they use a toner which makes it a lovely creamy blonde - can I do this at home in between hair colour appointments? Thanks!

Yes.

I buy the Directions Silver semi perm dye/toner and mix a blob of it into a big helping of white conditioner (cheap as you like). Mix until all dye is incorporated and the mix should be a pale baby blue (like the bleach used at hairdressers). Coat your hair thoroughly in the masque and sit with cling film or a shower cap for an hour or so. Rinse off. It keeps your blonde ashy, not yellow.

You can buy directions dye pots off amazon. About £10-£15. They last ages because you need so little each time.

Watching this thread with interest. I'd also recommend washing your hair only in cool or lukewarm water, OP, as that keeps the toner-y colour for longer, in my opinion.

A shampoo that can remove mineral deposits in the tap water that have built up on your hair and turned it yellowy is also a good idea (I'm lucky in that where I live the water seems to be OK for my highlights but when I go on holiday I notice the brassiness after even just one or two washes).

Is it OK to ask my salon to sell me the toner that they use? I'm very wary of experimenting with hair colour, (and have absolutely no skill at all with anything beauty-related), but, like the OP, I love the look of my highlights when they've been toned with salon toner.

Or can I ask for an appointment between highlights when they just wash, apply toner and then dry?

This is the Directions stuff I was talking about.

Wow, what a terribly useless photo Blush. Sorry it's so dark

I'm using the fanola no more yellow shampoo. I use it on dry hair and it works really well

MissJC · 11/08/2017 17:24

My hairs silvery blonde and I keep it up with the provoke touch of silver brightening shampoo once a week. It's cheap as chips too!

ItchyChicken · 11/08/2017 17:26

Yes yes to Touch of Silver!

needsomesunshineandwine · 11/08/2017 17:27

Purple shampoo, I would leave it on 1-2 times a week for a bit.

Louloucharlie · 11/08/2017 17:28

I've been blonde for years & I've tried all the silver shampoos. I've found the one that works best is Lee Stafford beach blondes, it leaves hair a nice beige / whitish tone .... not grey like some of them can. I use it 2 times a week & leave it on for about 5/ 10 mins to get the best effect : ) Boots sells it.

NomDePlumeReloaded · 11/08/2017 17:33

I find silver shampoos a bit harsh on my scalp, which is why I use semi permanent dyes (for some reason they don't give me scalp sores like shampoos). I also recommend avoiding sls in shampoos as they strip colour more quickly.

Gothbaby · 11/08/2017 17:55

silver shampoos, or when you lighten or bleach your hair, i add a bit of blue hair dye (such a stargazer or directions etc.) to the bleach! xxx

Jerome Russell Platinum Blonde toner works well for me. I keep on for about an hour (rather than the 15 mins it states). Tones to a nice fresh creamy white. It's £4.50 in Sainsbo.

I've also just tried the Directions in Silver, but more on the mid lengths and ends as they were a lot more brassy where there was some previous dye. It's definitely toned it all down, again I left it on for about an hour.

I've only been white blonde for a couple of months after being mostly red and auburn for the last twenty years. So much more upkeep involved, but I still love it!

bakewelltarte · 11/08/2017 18:59

Thanks for all the suggestions, lots to try! Lots of upkeep being blonde but after having tried brunette and red I am definitely a blonde at heart!

Nom you're being robbed if you pay £10 for Directions! It's £3.50 in my local shop (Liverpool if you're nearby OP)

littleredpear · 11/08/2017 23:31

Lee Stafford bleach blonde is amazing

NomDePlumeReloaded · 12/08/2017 08:35

Sorry, tazer. You're right. I've looked at my emails and I paid about £4.25 a jar. It was DD's manic panic amplified I paid more for.
